Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Dawn, I will occasionally read graphic novels. I like the artwork, but strangely, I like more prose with my stories, so I'll always choose a novel over graphic novels as my favorite format.

Aloha | 940 comments Knowing that China is a he is a good start. LOL

I've been around, just too busy to post much here. You fantasy guys aren't weird enough for me. Now, those horror people and the lusty PNR ladies, that's another matter...

Meet went well. My kid had the stomach flu for a week, barely ate and still made it to the meet. Her coach said she should in order to meet some qualifications, since she is a top swimmer. Sometimes when you're down, just showing up is good enough.

Grant wrote: "Look who it is! *grins* Glad to have you around, Thoa! Hope the meet went well today ;) I'm planning on reading some China Mieville next month...lol..i only recently found out that he was..well....."

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Ok, I just went crazy buck-wild at Amazon ( bought 4 pb books) and now I come here and realize I still needed Locke Lamora, Monster something or the other, and I wanted to try Discworld...

I bought LoLL and now I feel like I've been bad. :(

I don't know what I'm reading right now, lol.

message 454: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Ok, I haven't even started LoLL yet but I just realized that it is book 1 in an uncompleted series. I hate you guys. Seriously.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) It's easy to be bad on Amazon, MrsJoseph. :)

Aloha, I hope your child is feeling better soon. Are you on the PNR groups? I love PNR romance. :)

Chris Haught (haughtc) MrsJoseph wrote: "Ok, I haven't even started LoLL yet but I just realized that it is book 1 in an uncompleted series. I hate you guys. Seriously."

LoLL stands alone pretty well.

I'm reading the second one, Red Seas Under Red Skies. I'm hoping it will stand alone too, since there's no telling when or if the series will ever continue.

Aloha | 940 comments I have over 20,000 eBooks. Don't tell me about being misbehaving and out of control when it comes to books.

Thanks, Lady Di. My daughter is better, but still weak. And had to compete today. They definitely teach you about fortitude in sports even as young as 9, her age. No whiners wanted.

I'm the co-moderator for a PNR group that's secret. Shhhhh. It's a hot and steamy PNR group, so the group can get pretty risque, not for everybody. We received too many curiosity seekers who were giving us trouble, so we went secret. Now we're happy as clams without worrying about censorship. I haven't been reading PNR, but I'm there to support the group, such as protecting their freedom of speech and expression. The people there have a great sense of humor. They crack me up.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Wow!!! Do you have all your ebooks on your computer hard drive, Aloha? Or in different places?

message 459: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments On my hard drive for easy access, but I occasionally back it up on another hard drive. I also have a lot of eBooks in Kindle format purchased from Amazon, which they have in their memory bank for me.

Additionally, I have tons of audios purchased from Audible.com which is in their memory bank, and I have tons of audios from audio book clubs and libraries which is on my hard drive, and backed up on DVDs. I've been a member of Audible since they were new. For some reason my rate remained unchanged. They make me offers to change plans, but nothing they offer can beat the rate I have.

Which reminds me, I'm way overdue in backing up all my eBooks and audios. If my main 1TB drive crashes, I will be one very sad book lover.

message 460: by Aloha (last edited Jan 23, 2011 04:30AM) (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I'm afraid to say that 20,000 might even be a conservative estimate for eBooks alone.

message 461: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments 20,000 books. Wow. I'm in awe. :)

They certainly do teach athletes to be strong! I'm surprised they made your daughter compete. I hope she feels better soon.

message 462: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Thank you. She's doing great today. Good lesson for her. She pushed through the meet, even did a best time and won a heat. Good lesson for me, too. When you feel down and out, show up for the life party, anyway, for anything to happen. Said the fortune cookie.

message 463: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Why do the narrators have to sound like old time detective movies when they're narrating detective books. The narrator in The City & The City was starting to annoy me. Same with the narration for Something from the Nightside. I had to double check to make sure that it wasn't the same narrator.

message 464: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I finally started The Lies of Locke Lamora last night. I haven't gotten very far but so far so good.

I also plan to start on Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword and Sorceress XXII. I haven't read anything from this anthology series since MZB died.

message 465: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Adding Driven by W. G. Griffiths for reading in eBook and paper now that I know what I'm focusing in audio. This mystery/thriller is really good so far.

I can never take audio detective books seriously. My English teacher in year 10 decided that, instead of reading the book, we would listen to it. He chose one of the Sherlock Holmes books (I can't remember which one) and I was practically in hysterics the whole way through.

message 467: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Am I glad I wasn't introduced to Sherlock Holmes via audio, because I love the series. I can't imagine my reading history without Sherlock Holmes because the audio drove me to hysterics.

message 468: by Laura (new)

Laura (booksbytheflame) Yeah. Once I get over the audio fiasco, I'll get back into them. It was a good book, just the narrator wasn't :)

message 469: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I debated whether I should read Green's Nightside series instead of listening to the audio, since the audio didn't inspire me to want to go to the 2nd book. An audio is pretty annoying if I'd rather make my own audio using my Mac's Alex voice.

message 470: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I can't really do audio books. They are too slow for me.

message 471: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I really like the narrator for the Nightside books. Having both read and listened up to book three, I think that that old detective voice of the narrator's really adds to Green's prose. That's just my two cents, though. :)

message 472: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) So far this month I have read/finished:
Mistress of Rome by Kate Quinn (5 stars)
Wizard and Glass by Stephen King (4 stars)
Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder (4 stars)
Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder (3 stars)
Rides a Dread Legion by Raymond E. Feist (3 stars)
The Shining by Stephen King (5 stars)
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (4 stars)
Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch (4 stars)

I'm currently reading:
Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder
UR by Stephen King
The Hedge Knight by George R.R. Martin

I'm also hoping to get to Magician: Apprentice (re-read) before the month is out. It's been a productive month!

message 473: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Wow, Dawn! You've had a good month!

I just picked up a copy of Wizard and Glass yesterday and I really loved Poison Study and Magic Study. I have to admit I felt that Poison study was stronger than Magic Study, which made me pause instead of diving into Fire Study. Please tell me how it goes!

message 474: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) So far I agree with Nicola. I'm only reading Fire Study to finish out the series, I own it so I might as well. I'm only about 200 pages in.. But I'm not too impressed so far.

message 475: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Good to know. I'll not buy that one. It's always good to keep something off my TBR shelf. :)

message 476: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Finished The Book of Lost Things last night and started Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry this morning at the dr.s office.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Ooh. I want to read that one too, Amanda.

message 479: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Finished Driven by W. G. Griffiths yesterday. A very entertaining book. If you enjoy mystery/thriller, I highly recommend this book. The characters were strongly drawn out, the action fast paced, and the premise intriguing.

Moving on to finish The Store by Bentley Little , and continuing with the audio of The City & The City by China Miéville . Slowly knocking down my pile of Currently Reading.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm starting Mistborn today. I'm looking forward to it. :)

message 481: by Becky (new)

Where did I put that roque mallet??

Yep. It figures that we would get all of this snow when my boyfriend, who loves shoveling snow, is out of town. =\

They make people who like shoveling snow?? Can we borrow a few, pretty please?

message 489: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I don't like it, but I'm really good about shoveling snow. Pretty OCD about it, really. It has to be nicely shoveled with lots of room for the car to maneuver, and no messy snow on the ground where we walk on.

message 490: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) MrsJoseph wrote: "They make people who like shoveling snow?? Can we borrow a few, pretty please?"

LOL We could maybe strike a rental agreement. ;)

I'm anal about not shoveling snow. That's what God created men for. :D

Janny (jannywurts) | 181 comments Might I suggest (from a sunny day in Florida) that you all dig out of your drift, make some hot chocolate, and pick up a copy of Smilla's Sense of Snow? Great book. Fascinating insight into a cold weather culture....

message 493: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol...I just finished raking leaves outside in flip flops, shorts and a muscle shirt :) Gotta love the South :) It's a lovely 69 degrees right now and yes I'm so laughing at all you yanks :)

message 494: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I don't mind the snow.. But I do live in an apartment, so I don't have to shovel. My opinion might be slightly different if I actually had to shovel it.. :)

message 495: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I used to love shovelling snow until I got my snow blower. When you get one of those and use it for the first time, it's like you're some character out of a sci-fi novel, a man from the future, commanding some strange, new, and wonderful machine...

I'm not a "yank". I grew up in the south - that's my home. I'm a Southerner who unfortunately now lives where it snows. :(

I, too, am a displaced Southerner. And I hate snow. :( It's my goal to save enough money to buy on own private island.
