Megan Derr is a fantastic author! I'm slowly collecting her works.

I'm reading stories for Elissa Rolle's award. I got some excellent books and some that I'm not to keen on reading. Not the quality is bad, some are just too violent for my taste, some are the 2nd/3rd books of a series and I'm really confused at the plot because the books because they seem to start in the middle of nowhere to me. They just make me go "Huh?"

Reading The Violet and the Tom. I'm not a big fan of the SM part of BDSM but this one is good. (and free!)

I love wolf!Simon. He's so cute. LOL. There are also actions, intriguing pack dynamic, forced-bonding in a unique way, and the characters are very likable, esp Paul the vet.

I love to read and write standalone. I've gotten in such a habit of writing series that it's almost second nature now to make sure I leave plenty of threads for further exploration.

But I love ending a story on the perfect note and letting it echo on forever. That's why there won't be a sequel to Come Unto These Yellow Sands. As much as I loved those characters and their world, I wanted to end on that moment.

Heck if I know. When you describe the plot and the world it sounds like a lot of other books, but it doesn't feel that way when you read it. Maybe the sense of menace? Maybe the distinctive characters?

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments I'm reading Cut and Run (the first book, not the whole series yet) right now. Not very far into it, and I'm liking the characters. But like everything else I've read by these authors, the way they handle POV is making me nuts. It really slows down the reading, and drags me out of the story, when I have to go back and re-read sentences and paragraphs to figure out which one is "talking" now. (Not just dialog, but internal thoughts.)

I've decided it's an effect of the way they collaborate. I don't find it as painful in the later books. Although they still head hop, it seems smoother. The other problem with Cut and Run is that it's too long and drags in spots. The next two are much better.

Yes! There are some reviews out there that make me want to read a book so badly, then I start to think I want to spend my money on something I'd probably like.

Not because it's bad, but it's making me mad.
I'm reading In the Flesh by Ethan Stone. I was drawn to it because I knew the narrator was not your average likable character. I am at 50% and I don't know what to think of it, apart that it's raw. The narrator, the writing, the dialogs, the story, the sex, it's incredibly raw. I have no idea if it's intentional or not. I probably should read something else from the same author to make my mind about it.

I started In The Flesh last week and got about 50% through it, then put it down for some reason and haven't had a strong urge to pick it back up. I think me biggest beef is the the character's name being Flesh. Yuck. Ew. And then people just call him that. "Hey, Flesh!" Blech. At some point in the beginning it was stated that Flesh wasn't his real name, but I didn't read enough to find out why he's called that. What could be worse than flesh?

I agree that the writing felt raw, and I was also not sure if that was intentional or not. Sometimes it felt like the author was trying to go for a old school film noir kind of feel, the kind of thing that would have a voice over introduction by a private investigator telling you to never trust a dame, at other times it just felt like the writing was too simplistic and rough. I do intend to finish the book, I just haven't gotten around to it.

I just finished The Locker Room by Amy Lane. The only other book of hers I've read was Truth in the Dark, which I had enjoyed very much. The locker Room wasn't bad, though it could have used a bit of trimming, but it requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief and gets too melodramatic at times. All right, a lot of the time. Like when the two MCs are separated for 6 weeks and they both fall apart and practically die and then a bunch of random women have to move in with one of them to take care of him and the other develops a drinking problem which leads to the inevitable dramatic car crash. There were some really well written parts and a few passages that really struck me, then there were parts that I totally didn't get, like the first time the guys had sex and character number one was thinking about how he was so enthralled that wouldn't have been able to leave even if character number two had "gotten up to go take a leak." What? What the hell is that sentence doing in the middle of my sex scene? Has the English language really run out of new ways to say "they were really into it" that now we judge passion by whether or not it could outlast a bathroom break?

LOL. If you like the series, you will get a lot out of this book. But it's just as frustrating as the rest of them relationship wise. This one is only book 4 out of 9 or so, they can't solve all any of their problems too quickly or the story would be over. :D

message 5189: by Candice (new)

Candice Frook (cefrook) | 374 comments Just read Half Pass by Astrid Amara. I also went back in this dialog to see if y'all had read it, etc. I think I liked it better than most. Amara's writing in this particular instance reminded me, several times, of Josh's. Her Hell something-or-other stories were a disappointment to me. (Just my opinion, but they seemed a quickly written self-indulgence that maybe she herself might not rec.) Her Archer novel, I liked very much. Half Pass is the first thing I've read of hers since The Archer that I thought was comparable in quality.

Yes, the cop is a sorcerer which is "on fire" and he can't touch or be touched with bare hands.

I finished it this morning. Not being a native speaker, it doesn't have a strong enough impact on me, but I have to admit that if a protag of a book in my language had that name... mmmh, yeah, it wouldn't be all that pleasant. And regarding the explanation for it (view spoiler).

I agree that the writing felt raw, and I was also not sure if that was intentional or not. After the first 50% of the book, he begins to express more feelings and the writing lets you breathe a bit, but when he clams up again, the writing goes back to being very clipped, so I decided to trust the author that it's a choice and round up my 3.5 stars to 4. At least it was different.

I have. The next one is interesting and has the same MC. It's very packed and almost like 2 books in one, one part deals with a current plotline and one with the MC's backstory. It's a very heavy story but the clipped and raw narrative helps, makes it bareble.

The third book was ok but had a plot that was too unbelievable for me. Also different MC.

Lol, this is what I wrote at the end of my review:

...he is an interesting character and hands down the most enticing mystery of the whole book. I'll read the sequel because I want to know more about him.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4, because I was fascinated despite not wanting to.

message 5200: by Sagajo (last edited Oct 16, 2011 06:16AM) (new)

Sagajo | 179 comments I have the first book rated as a 4 star and the 2nd as a 3 star. I think the 2nd got a lower rate because of the 2 diverse plotlines. I didn't bother to save the third one in my bookshelf.
