What else are you reading? (June 2010 - May 2013) *closed*

That's funny, I liked Strawberries for Dessert the best of all the books I've read of hers so far. To be fair, that aren't too many though ;-D
I loved Cole to be honest - and I liked that in this story it was a gay man that had a problem with Cole's flamboyancy and had to ask himself why and if that was enough to forget all other feelings he might have. A lot of the time it's the homophobic pricks who have issues with effeminate men, although as far as I understand this sort of narrow-mindedness is pretty common in some parts of the gay community as well.

I liked that part of it, too. But even when he came around, Cole never appeared to unbend or return Jon's feelings. He was just too cold. He came off as very unfeeling.

I think that's a good idea. Thank you for doing this, Calathea. :-)

Maybe?
Maybe?

Okay. At least the threads can still be read and maybe the final post can indicate the thread continues elsewhere?

Just that they are more cerebral than personal? I felt that they were really just about the mystery -- that's not a bad thing because one of my great criticisms of crime TV is that it spends too much time on the inner life of the protags. But maybe I just want more in a book?

One thing I particularly love are vintage mysteries set in exotic climes. Gosh, who was it...someone Huxley who wrote the mysteries set in Africa back in the 40s? 30s?

Elspeth Huxley?
Author of The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood?
These look great!

We could probably even get away with yearly topics. ;) The topic only broke after years of extensive use.

Yes, we can put a link in the last post that leads to the new topic.
Of course, now that we started to talk about opening a new topic, it worked correctly...

Your mention of Elspeth Huxley reminds me of another author who wrote a series of wonderful mysteries during the 1950s set in the exotic locations to which her husband was posted: M.M. Kaye. She may be better known for The Far Pavillions but her "Death in..." books are wonderful, and very evocative of their time. Death in Kashmir: A Mystery is the first (they're not linked in any way so can be read in any order).

One day that damned film is going to surface on the Acorn channel and I will resubscribe.
You guys have to let me know if it ever shows up anywhere!
