The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again
This is the mother of all fantasy novels. From dwarfs to dragons to giant spiders and invisibility, there isn't a dull moment, and it all feels so original. And you can see that it was an inspiration for many of your favorite fantasy adventure authors. This book came before the Lord of the rings, so it retains a very sweet feel, before rings get dangerous. I vote this as an absolute must read.
Total points 45.

25.5 My favourite genre is speculative fiction, encompassing pretty much all of science fiction and fantasy. I read The Dance of Time which is the last in a series about beings from the future trying to change our history.
My second favourite genre is historical fiction. In particular, I like books about fictional people in real history. I read Shadows in Bronze which is one of a series of murder mysteries set in ancient Rome.
I like both these genres because they stretch your imagination and make you think about ways in which the world could be different. Or, it could just be that I feel like a fish out of water in modern society.
30.1 I was born in April (dystopia) on a Thursday (disasters) so I read for dystopia Guernica Night and for disasters Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883

25.4 Happy Birthday to Me: Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz who is a Cancer (born 7/9). A noun on page 31 was Glass, so I read Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll.
30.2 For the Children: Classic book: Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens by J.M. Barrie and read passages to my students at my summer camp. I also read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll for a book with a child as the main character.

Keeping the Feast: One Couple's Story of Love, Food, and Healing in Italy by Paula Butturini
My husband usually reads only nonfiction and when he heard about this book on NPR, he checked it out from the library. He told me it was a must read and I should give it a go. I wanted to check it out first, since it wasn’t my usual fiction fare, so I visited Caribousmom to see a review. It was a great 5 star review, so the book became my Books and Blogs choice.

25.6 “Summer Lovin”
Ten Cents a Dance by Christine Fletcher
Goodreads Author
But tonight it’s a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on and dance all night
Despite the heat it’ll be alright
And, babe, don’t you know it’s a pity the days
Can’t be like the nights in the Summer in the City
In the Summer in the City
from memory: Summer in the City by the Lovin’ Spoonful
My memories of this great song of summer are tied to my experiences working at an amusement park in Denver, Elitch’s. The park had all the rides and games, but it had something more: a summer theater and the Trocadero Ballroom. Every summer I could watch the couples coming in their gowns and suits to dance to the music of the Big Bands of the 40s that the management brought in. The music and the dancing made me imagine what life was like in that time and the book Ten Cents a Dance by Christine Fletcher gave me lots of insight into the time period in a different big city, Chicago. At first, I didn’t think the book was going to be tied to summertime. The story begins in the fall when the weather is turning colder, but as it turned out there were two perfect connections to the song Summer in the City and my teenage summer memories:
The instant I saw the Ferris wheel, lit up bright as Christmas, I knew. “Riverview!” I cried. (p. 229)
Eleven o’clock and outside it still sweltered. The day’s heat rose onto my bare legs as though coals burned under the sidewalk.
(p. 286)
Although Ruby lived in another time and place, one full of racial prejudice and the morality and beliefs popular during the WWII era, my memories of working through the nights in Denver summers were rekindled. To say more about the inside life of Elitch’s and the more seedy connections to the book would be to give away spoilers, so read it first and then ask me about it!

I read the book Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. The hero of this book was a business mogul that cared only about status and power. He came from very humble beginnings and rose to the top of the financial world. He cared so much what image he projected and wanted everyone to see him as high class and powerful.

The first book that I read was the classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. I loved it, gave it 5 stars and passed it on to my niece.
The second book that I read was Messenger by Lois Lowry. Matty is the child at the center of the story. I gave this book 4 stars. It gave a me satisfying conclusion to the trilogy that started with The Giver. I still feel that the second book in the series, Gathering Blue, was the best of the three.

This book was an honest look at both the misery of being different (a dwarf) and the horror of Germany during WWII. It was written so that you feel the impact and from that sense it was a success. However, I found it a slow read and was plodding through it. And though the author painted the main character's challenging life in a way that you understand her anger, I didn't really like her.
Claiming a big book, as it was 525 pages.

Rebecca Fjelland Davis is a 3. I just finished reading her book Jake Riley Irreparably Damaged.
A while back I read Keys to the Demon Prison by Brandon Mull. I think this would count as Joy of Living (one of 3's characteristics) because they are out to Save the World.
If this counts that will make my total points 55.

A. A Children's Classic - A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle - recommended to my friend's daughter Bianca in hopes she loves the series as much as I do.

In life more often than not we come to see ourselves in certain roles (the cheerleader, the jock, the nerd etc.) or titles if you will...for this task you will need to read...
A. A book whose title in someway reflects who you think you are; that describes you in someway. (EXAMPLES: A Hopeless Romantic, Company Man)
I like to tell stories, so I read the fantasy novel:
Story Teller (2003) by Amy Thomson (Paperback, 384 pages)
AND
B.Explain if and how the main character (presumably whom the title refers to) does or does not remind you of yourself.
The main character (the one the title refers to) is psychologically a middle-aged woman who is also a mother; and, she likes to tell stories. That sounds like me :0). However, the title character has other characteristics that are nothing like me.

The Land of Lincoln:
Lincoln: A Photobiography by Russell Freedman Cover to Cover
The Lincolns: A Scrapbook Look at Abraham and Mary by Candace FlemingPortions Read
Chicago Setting:
The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon Goodreads Author
Last summer I had the good fortune to attend the American Library Association Conference in Chicago. I stayed with my sister in Evanston and drove Lakeshore Drive along the beautiful Lake Michigan every day. When a challenge about Illinois appeared on the Seasonal Reads Challenge, I was excited to learn more about Illinois native, Abraham Lincoln, and the Civil War era. I knew a lot of the story because this is a part of our country’s history that I find fascinating but I don’t think we as a collective country still understand the depth of emotions at play that effect us to this day. I read Lincoln: A Photobiography by Russell Freedman cover to cover and read parts of The Lincolns: A Scrapbook Look at Abraham and Mary by Candace Fleming to fill in details and learn more about Mary Lincoln. Both books included primary source documents and a complete picture of our 16th president. One saying that I never knew was attributed to Abraham Lincoln was:
It is true that you may fool all of the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all of the time; but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.
From a speech at Clinton, Illinois, September 8, 1858. (p. 135)
Fast forward around 100 years, and although freedom has been achieved, equality has not. I was born in 1953, so I lived through and remember the Civil Rights struggles, but I was raised in Denver, so wasn’t touched directly by the major demonstrations and violence of the times. I read an excellent historical fiction book, The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon, the 2008 Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award winning book. The book takes place in 1968, the year of Martin Luther King’s assassination, and follows two brothers as they choose between their father’s peaceful leadership in conjunction with the work of MLK and the emerging Black Panther Party in Chicago. I think this honest telling through a fictional voice captured and instructed me more than any history book or current events articles of my teenage years as I learned about the real ideals of the BPP. I don’t think this understanding diminishes the work of Martin Luther King (or other non-violent protesters), who will always remain a true hero of our country, but I recommend this book highly as a way to enhance your knowledge about the developments of race relationships in our country. Not only that, but it is a gripping and emotional story well told by Magoon.

For Task 10.9 (learning something) I read Vision in White by Nora Roberts. I want to learn more about photography. I really stink at it and as a result our family pictures are not good! Also, I am struggling with my business website and have been procrastinating doing the photos for that. This book is inspiring from that point of view -- the main character is truly inspired by photography!

I highly recommend Mary by Janis Newman. I gave it 5*.
I had expected to enjoy this book but enjoyed it so much more than expected. It's a very readable book and Mary is portrayed as a woman of deep emotional feelings....in a time when feelings and emotions were normally kept subdued. Trying to repress her emotions caused outlets in other ways...such as obsessive shopping.
Mary lived through more pain and grief and tragedy than anyone ever should. It's not a wonder that her obsessions overcame her for periods of time.
She may not have been mentally strong but she wasn't insane, as her son proclaimed....at least I don't think so.
This book packs a punch. The Assassination scene was heart-wrenching, as were the deaths of her sons.
I think I've claimed for a 500 page Big Book ticket but, just in case I haven't, I'd like to claim one now. This book was 636 pages long.
I didn't enjoy Night.
This book was really "meh" for me throughout and there were details that didn't fit with what I'd read in other Holocaust books so I kind of disbelieved some of this story. (if interested, there's more details in my Review. I didn't want to spoil it for anyone here).
I felt as if I were reading a YA book; the writing was very young, and yet I can't find a reference to this being a YA book. If it were one, I'd give it another star....maybe.
However, I think the main weakness of this book is somehow making the experience lighter than it was. Survivors and Victims of the Holocaust deserve more. They deserve nothing less than the real truth to be told.

I've completed:
10.3 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo- Steig Larsson

#25.5 Helen's Task: Share the Summer Love

I read Married By Morning by Lisa Kleypas June 1 This is part of a series about the Hathaway family and how they adjusted to a change in social status when the brother unexpectedly inherited a title.
B. My 2nd favorite genre is Paranormal, because it expands reality and explores things that go beyond the normal & expected, such as psychic abilities, magic, other species; anything from the possible to the far-fetched. I read Dreamveil by Lynn Viehl July 8 which is the 2nd book in the Kyndred series about genetic experiments on orphans that cause a variety of unique powers in the children.
