Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) (Skipped the h) Good point! Lol; I'm going to have to start thinking better. :)

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 538 comments Finished Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson
Going to read Tempting the Beast (Breeds, #1) by Lora Leigh for a book challenge next.

message 104: by [deleted user] (new)

Sequels... I'd like to think they have a idea for a story and as they write and elabrate the story gets pulled in so many directions that they can make the idea in to a sequel since they didn't finish it in the first place.

Or they come up with ideas as they write that would make a fabulous second read.

message 109: by Shay (new)

Shay | 862 comments Does anyone else read multiple books? I usually have two mysteries going (one cozy/contemporary, one historical, for example), one fantasy/science fiction, one non-fiction. More if I can't get into a particular book and start another from that category.

Currently, I'm reading Set Sail for Murder (Polly Pepper, #4) by Richard Tyler Jordan , A Good Knife's Work (Five Star Mystery Series) by Sheila York , Once Bitten, Twice Dead by Bianca D' Arc , Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville , and Super Crunchers Why Thinking-by-Numbers Is the New Way to Be Smart by Ian Ayres .

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Wow... I read a lot of books multiple. But I go no higher than 6. They're usually all Fantasy of some sort, but sometimes you get the HFict mixed in.

Like right now I'm reading Rebel Angels (Gemma Doyle, #2) by Libba Bray , Deception Point by Dan Brown , The Dark Elf Trilogy Collector's Edition (Forgotten Realms Dark Elf Trilogy, #1-3; Legend of Drizzt, #1-3) by R.A. Salvatore , Eclipse (Twilight, #3) by Stephenie Meyer , The Hunger Games (Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins , and just started Star Power (Talent, #3) by Zoey Dean .

Shay | 862 comments Would a 12 year old boy who hates to read like The Hunger Games? I guess the Love to Read gene skipped my son completely.

**Carla** Shay wrote: "Would a 12 year old boy who hates to read like The Hunger Games? I guess the Love to Read gene skipped my son completely."

I think he would like the story line of the book...but if he just doesn;t like to read it might be hard for him to get into it only for that reason.

message 115: by Shay (new)

Shay | 862 comments We don't know how he did it because he rarely reads, but he could read at a college level since 5th grade. So, if he liked it he could devour it in a day. Mostly reads scientific and technical things. He likes very few fictional stories, but Hunger Games looks like it has potential.

message 116: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) if he doesnt like the hunger games, try The Lightning Thief.it seems to work with kids his age

message 117: by [deleted user] (new)

He might like something by Cory Doctorow, such as Little Brother. There's computer science plus social engineering. My partner doesn't read fiction at all, asking, "Why would I want to read lies?" Maybe your son would rather read something like Stephen Hawking instead?

message 118: by [deleted user] (new)

If he likes scientific books I would recommend Microbe Hunters by Paul de Kruif Microbe Hunters by Paul de Kruif. This book is about the early scientists that discovered microbes and other such diseases like Malaria. I was supposed to read this book for Microbiology but my love of not reading for school had me curious once the semester was done. So, yes, I read this book for fun and it was a fun educational read. Loved it.

message 119: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) lol

I'm in the Middle of City of Bones (Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare by Cassandra Clare. (Me and Z are reading it for a buddy read and it counts as a re-read for me.)

Just finished The Angel Experiment (Maximum Ride, #1) by James Patterson The Angel Experiment by James Patterson. I've read several book by James Patterson, by no means a lot of them, but I have enjoyed every single book that I have picked up or listened to by James Patterson.

I live in Illinois too and I know what you mean. The heavy rainfall too was really ridiculous.

Heather (nickyblue7) | 486 comments i was playing volleyball outside in front of my house when it started pouring on us than when it was pouring i was eating sushi with my fam for dinner and the tornado alarms went off and we had to carry all the dinner into r basement. sigh* such a tough life

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 538 comments Heather wrote: "i was playing volleyball outside in front of my house when it started pouring on us than when it was pouring i was eating sushi with my fam for dinner and the tornado alarms went off and we had to ..."

That did not happen to me. It was just pouring buckets of water with lightning and thunder. It would be tough if a tornado hit in my area because we have no basement.

Heather (nickyblue7) | 486 comments did the sky turn yellow?

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 538 comments Heather wrote: "did the sky turn yellow?"

I think so, but then the sun went down.

Cynthia Meyerhoefer | 3 comments Shay wrote: "Would a 12 year old boy who hates to read like The Hunger Games? I guess the Love to Read gene skipped my son completely."

We suggest Maniac McGee, Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians (we also like it as it is very post-modern), or the Mysterious Benedict Society (the length may be off-putting).

message 131: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Symko (csymko) | 6 comments I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We did not get the storms yesterday but we did on Monday night though. We actually had a tornado warning and it poured and we had the horrendous thunder and lightning. They had spotted a funnel cloud about 6 miles from our house...kinda scary. Happened here at like 1:00am when the sirens went off...so I guess you could say Tuesday morning. Finally things calmed down about 2:30am. Long day at work on Tuesday.

message 132: by Heather (new)

Heather (nickyblue7) | 486 comments it started around five or six here in Chicago and the storm ended around maybe 7 but it thundered a bit longer and then it was really calm and the whole sky was a deep yellow! that was probably the freakiest part of the storm

message 139: by Shay (new)

Shay | 862 comments I'm reading Sizzling Sixteen (Stephanie Plum, #16) by Janet Evanovich which is the perfect read for me right now. Light, hopefully funny. I just picked it up at the library.

Kind of OT, who besides me is beholden to their library for most of their books? My reason is, of course, primarily money. (Three kids, three pairs of shoes every month, clothes, food, their books.) The other reason is that most books I just read once, so why buy? I do buy, mostly at the used bookstore, when my book piles run low. I use my husband's card too so I can check out a total of 100 books and request 40 books between the two cards.

message 140: by Heather (new)

Heather T (horrorvacui000) | 273 comments I keep refusing to get my husband a card for me so that I don't have to look in 2 places, but your rational for holds is sound and now you've given me ideas. Eek.

I'm jealous Shay. I really want to read it, but I'm trying to be good and wait until I get it. I'm number 93 on the list, but I was number 203 so it seems they have a lot of copies.

message 141: by Shay (new)

Shay | 862 comments Thanks everyone for the recommendation for The Hunger Games. I have it on request for my son. He liked the author's other series Gregor of Bane (?) so I am hopeful.

@Heather, having two library cards works out really well. I currently have 39 holds between the two cards and 72 items checked out. Also, I haven't really liked the past couple of books in the Stephanie Plum series, including the between-the numbers books, but I'm about 30 pages in and so far so good.

Andrez (andrez-ssi) the underland chronicles?

message 144: by Shay (new)

Shay | 862 comments Yes, it was the Underland Chronicles. The first book that came up was Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane when I requested it at the library. This series has the distinction of being the only fantasy series that my son liked, so I'm hopeful for him liking The Hunger Games even more as it doesn't appear to be a fantasy novel. (with magic, talking animals, etc.) So, amazing the author had the ability to come up with two great series.

message 145: by Andrez (new)

Andrez (andrez-ssi) yeah the hunger games is definitely not fantasy. i havent read the underland chronicled though. next time ill order it maybe

Shay | 862 comments Among others, I'm reading The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie (Flavia de Luce, #1) by Alan Bradley . I'm really enjoying it, so much so that I'm pacing myself. Only allowing myself to read it in small bits and only when I can devote my attention to it.
