Toni Do you read a series straight through (until you finish the last book that is currently out) OR do you jump around between different series? Do you read more than one book at a time?
I seem to jump around and I read more than one book at a time. There are a few exceptions though (if I am reading a book that I cannot stop).
:)

Nairabell | 193 comments I tend to read a series straight through, though I'll usually have read a least one or two before to see if I like them. Sometimes it'll just be 3 or 4 books, but every now and then I'll reread something huge like the Dark Hunters to catch up before a new book. I can't read more than one book at once as I lose track of what's going on.

Christa (is on top of the world!) (obsesedwbooks) | 10 comments Ugh I'd get too bored reading a series straight through because then I'd have nothing to read while I wait for the next book to come out. I have to have something to read at all times.

message 4: by Ez (last edited Aug 17, 2010 08:40PM) (new)

Ez (ezrah-rah) | 219 comments I tend to jump around. Even if I might have all of the books in a series, I'll usually take a break between the books. For the most part, I read one book at a time. Otherwise, I have a hard time focusing. I prefer to completely finish a book before I move onto the next. If it's something really long, or that I'm having a hard time with, I might put it down to read something else and come back to it, but I'm usually not reading both books simultaneously.

DarkHeart "Vehngeance" (darkheart) | 737 comments It depends on how much I'm enjoying the series. Series like Black Dagger Brotherhood and Immortals After Dark are ones I read all the way through when I discovered them. Others, like The Hollows and Women of the Otherworld, are series that I enjoy, but don't necessarily feel drawn to read all at once, so I have been reading them randomly with other series.

message 6: by Heather (new)

Heather | 243 comments It all depends on the series. I don't know how many series I've started one, only to start another one by the same author and forget about the first series. I have several series like that and now they are buried in my containers. Make sense?

message 7: by Arlen (new)

Arlen Ruiz (rojasarlenaolcom) | 12 comments I TEND TO READ THROUGH ALL THE SERIES AND ONCE I FINISH START A NEW ONE UNTIL THE NEXT BOOK COMES OUT...I HAVE TO HAVE SOMETHING TO READ SINCE THERE IS NOTHING GOOD IN TV NOWADAYS.... :D

message 8: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 320 comments It depends some series I am hooked on and I just keep reading book after book. Then others the first one is meh so I will read something in between before picking up book two.

I do tend to read multiple books at a time though.

message 9: by Nairabell (new)

Nairabell | 193 comments I'm hooked on so many different series that waiting for a new book is never an issue - finding time to read is :)

message 10: by Brandy (new)

Brandy Holt (brandy11d) | 16 comments I actually just started reading two books at the same time. I kinda like it. I have a "during the day" book and a "late night" book. I may continue doing this every so often.

message 11: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 216 comments There's no way for me to read one whole series before moving on to the next one, I'm hooked on reading too many different series. I jump around since series tend to have their next books come out at different times.

message 12: by Heather (new)

Heather | 34 comments I have to read them straight through. I can't stand to get out of order. I have even been known to have books further along in the series, but be waiting for the next one I'm on from the library, and will refuse to read the ones I have! LOL!

message 13: by Liv (new)

Liv (livlovelaugh) | 39 comments I ideally like to go through a whole series non-stop if I could. This past April I did the april reading challenge and I'd have to say reading or attempted to read 10 different books in 10 different series has gotten me all confused lol! So I find that I forgot what's going on when I continue onto the next book in order. Just recently I read the new series for Sookie Stackhouse and Black Dagger Brotherhood and find that I've forgotten parts of what have happened in the previous books so I usually try to review w/ an audiobook if available before reading the new one.

message 14: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (cooldrenth) | 51 comments I will read a whole series if they are all out or I will buy the books as they come out and then wait in till I have 3 books in the series then I will read them. So then I can read one after the other. But it does not take me long to read a book so I like to have more then one book if I get in to the series. Even if the book is long I can get through it fast. But I can also read more then when book at a time. But if I get in it a book ,I will not put it down in till I am done. Then move on to a different book or series. But I hate to wait for the next book in a series. It has to be a very good series for me to read the book, when it first comes out.

message 15: by Angela (new)

Angela (angbens) | 343 comments I am reading a few series at once. I usually I am waiting for a book for a series either through the library to waiting to buy it, or through the swap, so while waiting I read a different book...

message 16: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 209 comments I read a series all the way through. I can't stop, it's a complusion. LOL

message 17: by Rashel (new)

Rashel | 1 comments i try to read a series all the way through but sometimes i cant and have 2 put it down. I like to read a few books at a time because sometimes the newest 1 won't be out for a while so the other books make me read the series slower. If its like a series I really enjoy like the Sookie Stackhoue ones then i'll just read non-stop...can't help myself :)

message 18: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleylaura87) | 162 comments I used to have to read straight through. But since joining GoodReads and doing challenges, I've gotten more in the habit of shuffling. If I found a really good series, I may not be able to hold back though. :)

message 19: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Bair-Epps | 725 comments Same way Ashley!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments I like to break up a series, although I did read the GhostWalkers and some of the BDB and LOTU back to back.

message 21: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 117 comments I'm like Danielle. I want to break it up a bit. If it's a short series then I might read the books back to back. If its a GREAT series, I'll read them back to back. If not, then I'll read a book or two. Put it down. Go to some other books and then come back. Also if the books don't come out fast enough for my taste, then I'll hold off because I HATE to get all caught up in a series and then I have to wait a year or so for the next book.

message 22: by Danielle The Book Huntress (last edited May 10, 2010 07:56PM) (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 461 comments Oh, I hate that too, Samantha. I learned my lesson with the IAD series. I always stockpile two at a time for my favorite series, if I can help it.

Elise-Pinterest+Goodreads=The Perfect Book Boyfriend (eliselovesshinyandnew) | 12 comments It depends. If it is a small series and good, then yes I will read it completely. However, if it's large, like the Dark Series, I have to break it up. However, I cannot read something within the same genre or I get confused. I learned that lesson the hard way. I had been reading the Midnight Series and ran out of books. Then I started the Dark Series and then a midnight series book came out. I read that in between, but, oh my, things began to blend together. Now I will read something from a totally different genre, like a romance.

message 24: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 117 comments Danielle, you have to do that. I know! I got caught out there waiting for books like that.

message 25: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 453 comments I'm all over the place. I read between 3-7 books at a time because I have to constantly have a book to read or I get bitchy. Seem's like every book these days is a part of a series which annoys me a little. I'd love to read a few stand alone PNR or UF's that don't drag on for 10 books.

message 26: by Mhollie (new)

Mhollie | 178 comments I'm like a dog with a bone. I have to read the whole series, one right after the other and then wait for the newest book. Like the BDB series. It just kills me to wait a whole year for Manny & Payne! Whaaaa!

message 27: by Rayna (new)

Rayna i have to finish a series once i have started it! However, if i am in the middle of a series and one of my new releases has come out in the midst....i will finish the book i am currently reading and then read the new release and go back to the series i was reading! hopefully im not a traitor to the series....lol. i do however listen to audio books in my vehicle so sometimes im read one and listen to one at the same time!

message 28: by Ren Puspita (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) Actually i have finished the whole series before i started new series. But it dont work in Dark Hunter series. I just finished until Dance with Devil and not continue it. Maybe later...

message 29: by Shelleyrae (new)

Shelleyrae at Book'd Out | 145 comments For me it depends completely on what i can get my hands on - if i can get a series I will read it straight through - usually not possible though because I alwasy seem to be waiting on someone to return something. I won't read say the 4th in a series usually if I havent read the third - Ill wait til I can get my hands on it unless it doenst matter - like with the Dark Hunters or Carpathians - they are series but not with a continued crucial storyline. I have a pretty good memory so I don't find jumping between series too bad - and I usually prefer to break up my reading rather than read all one genre. So I might read 2 PNR then I read a general fiction or biography or whatever. I read a complete book at a time - have to finish one before I start another.

message 30: by Heather in FL (new)

Heather in FL (heather_fl) I read a series straight through. Since I kinda just started PNR (or reading in general), there are lots of series that are already several books deep. I get depressed when I get to the end of a series because I'll have to wait for the next one, but at the same time, it's exciting to pick the next series to go through. I have the latest Southern Vampires book, but I have 2-1/2 Black Dagger Brotherhood's to get through before I'll pick that up.

message 31: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (bookie10) | 7 comments I'm in the same boat Heather. I'm new to PNR so I feel like I'm playing catch up. There are so many series I want to read! I prefer to read a series straight through, but certain things take priority. I've been reading the Dark Hunter Series, but had to take a break to read the Eclipse Novella before the movie comes out. I also drop everything for J.R. Ward - I will finish the book I am reading at the time, but then it's straight to BDB for me!

message 32: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 3070 comments I'm with you Leanna in term of plowing thru one author at time. Well, it's not like I have a choice since I was waiting for Lover Mine (Ward), I went thru 3 other authors and now I'm with Dark-Hunter (Kenyon). Im a late bloomer PNR too. I'm a crossed over from Twilight saga...and loving it. My next series might be Night Huntress and/or catching up with Midnight Breeds (Adrian) and Lords of the Underworld. All I can say is BDB needs its own time bc it's intense. Have you girls read anything similar to Ms. Ward's writing?

message 33: by Heather in FL (new)

Heather in FL (heather_fl) To me, the Cassie Palmer series was pretty intense. Not the SAME kind of intense, but I felt like Cassie was running almost the entire time in each book. :-) It was exhausting, lol.

I also tend to find the other stuff an author has done that might not be as popular. For example, I've read most of MaryJanice Davidson's stuff because I enjoyed the Queen Betsy series. Though I did discover that her female heroines are all kind of a Betsy flavor. It's OK though... I still enjoyed them. Then there was Patricia Briggs. She does the Mercy series, but she also has a couple of duologies that were pretty good, and I wouldn't have found the Alpha & Omega series otherwise.

The Readings of a Busy Mom Riaz (smoocy) | 16 comments I try to read through a whole series until i complete all of the ones that have been released and then start the next book/series. I have a real good memory so i dont have no problem getting a sequal and reading it and i still remember the previous book

message 35: by ஐAndreaஐ (new)

ஐAndreaஐ (rosesrrblue) | 707 comments It depends for me. Sereies the continue and follow the same character I read straight through like Night Huntress & Cassie Palmer.

Series like Dark Hunter and Midnight Breed I can't read back to back, the stories are too similar to me.

Katherine Quarles | 27 comments I try to read a series straight through; however, if I have gotten bored . . then I will jump around to other books. It really just depends.

message 37: by Nicky (new)

Nicky (KISMET8) | 3 comments I read every book in a series that is avaliable...and when I've completed the last book, I post a date in my outlook calendar to reminder when the next book in the series will be avaliable. I also get, I guess you could say depressed "OH Man" when I get to the end of a series because I'll have to wait for the next one, but it's always exciting to jump into a new series and make a new connection with new characters. Sooo YEAH! I'm a jumper only after my first series is finished.

message 38: by Crazy4more (new)

Crazy4more (lan-ni) | 3070 comments I hear you Nicky. That's why I have a couple series in the wing. I'm trying to catching with the Dark Hunter series, I'm on book 12 and I think there are 20 and counting...so I'm pretty happy while waiting for my other authors to get their books out.

message 39: by Lorinda (new)

Lorinda (missyelsie) | 4 comments In an ideal world I would...But I usually buy my books online. So I get a few books from different series and read those. If I like the ones I get then I continue to read multiple series...because I've already started mulitple series. And well online ordering isn't instant. Does that make sense?

message 40: by Nairabell (new)

Nairabell | 193 comments @Crazy4more - are you reading all the extra's for the Dark Hunters? I mean the anthology shorts and online stories.

message 41: by Jesse (new)

Jesse (Jessep) | 119 comments I will usually read the series all the way through, unless a book that I've been waiting to be released comes out while I'm in the middle of a series...then, I usually have to stop and read the anticipated release! Hey, that sounds like a Romance
phrase...Anticipated Release. hehehe. There are only a couple of series that I enjoy, but am not just so wild about that I can't break and then come back to. The only exception to this is the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series. I have made myself hold on A Breath of Snow and Ashes and Echo in Bone because I don't want to be left hangin' for another two years before the next release, so I'm TRYING to stretch it out. But, usually I just can't wait to see how things pan out for the characters so I have to keep going.

message 42: by Crissa (new)

Crissa (cgoody) | 9 comments I absolutely have to read an entire series all the way through. I'm not sure if this is an OCD thing or what but I keep seeing all these challenges where you read several books at once and I just can't do it! Especially if the series is good...I can't not know what happens next! The only time I have not finished a series is when it just isn't good. And even then, I keep reminding myself to go back and try it again b/c it bothers me so much that I didn't get the series finished. Ugh, it's a problem!

message 43: by Artemis (new)

Artemis yes. and when a new book to the series comes out i re-read the others so that the whole story is fresh in my mind lol i sound so ocd

message 44: by ☺~Tina~☺ (new)

☺~Tina~☺ (tina007) | 43 comments I use to read them all until I got to Dark Hunter and that broke me. Because I thought if I read one more time "what is it about this man/women" I was going to poke my eyes out. There are some series that I could read all of them but I hate to get to the end and the next book is not out for a year. So, I try now to break them up, it's hard on some of them but worth it.

message 45: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (aliciavillasenor) | 30 comments I read several at one time from different genres.

message 46: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ I find that most series books are very similar in both writing style and repeat characters so a little variety helps keep me reading. No matter how much I like a series, I get bored with it if I read more than 2 in a row. Except for Outlander where I could have read 10 of them in a row and never gotten tired of the characters, the setting or the writing style. If only Diana Gabaldon could write faster. :)

message 47: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. | 252 comments I would like to read a series all the way through but since I get a lot of my books off of paperbackswap, I usually have to wait.

message 48: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 10 comments I used to read a series in order, but now I just read whatever catches my fancy! I am currently reading Kenyon's Dark Hunters in order to read Acheron, but I just finished Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series.

message 49: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (semicloset_PNRreader) | 4 comments I always thought to myself that I would finish a series before moving on to another.
The fact that I had to wait for the next book in line to release kind of ruined that :P
I couldn't wait!
So I found myself starting another series, which would often end in me waiting for the next book to release. And then it happens again...

It's just a never-ending cycle for me!
Not that I'm complaining :)

message 50: by Sandra J (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 451 comments I usually have at least four or five books going at one time since I find that I'm often easily bored. All bets are off, however, if I find a book that grabs me from the start which I find extremely rare. Then that book gets finished (and probably reread), and I'm off to find more of that author's work. I'm not a huge fan of never-ending series. Enough, already. I can't imagine needing more than ten novels to finish out a story line. Frankly, most series die a natural death for me after 3 or 4 books.
