When I decided to read Cry Wolf for a challenge, I was advised to read the first story which was in the anthology. And of course, the anthology was nowhere to be found since it had been published the year before. My local UBS hasn't had it in either. I would like to read the short story since it sets up the characters and their situation, but it's not really necessary. And I have been known to read a series totally out of order. It doesn't bother me. "

Cool. I was just wondering, as I did go from the anthology to the book and Cry Wolf literally picks up minutes after Alpha and Omega (the story in the anthology) finishes, how you found it. Most people who read Cry Wolf first don't seem to enjoy it as much as those who started with On the Prowl.

I wasn't crazy about CRY WOLF, but I loved HUNTING GROUND, the 2nd book.

Caroline | 661 comments Hi Carol! Hi Teresa! I think a "cozy" is primarily defined as a "traditional" style mystery where the protagonist is usually an amateur sleuth and there is not excessive blood and gore. For example, Malice Domestic honors the traditional mystery and it says on the website "The genre is loosely defined as mysteries which contain no explicit sex or excessive gore or violence." I think the name also comes from the feelings you get reading such a book (as opposed to "thriller" or something like that). : ) I think "comfort read" is a good explanation.

message 207: by Mary (new)

Mary Kennedy | 27 comments Hi, I'm Mary Kennedy amd I write the Talk Radio Mysteries for Penguin. My agent pitched as "Frasier Meets Murder She Wrote." It's all about a psychologist who closes up her Manhattan practice and moves to sunny Florida to become a radio talk show host. And of course she solves a murder in every book. DEAD AIR is the first release, and REEL MURDER just hit the shelves. Glad to be part of this group. Still trying to figure out how to get "books by Mary" to come up on the screen, so at the moment, my titles are at the very end of all the books I've enjoyed.

Nice to "meet" you, Mary! I read Dead Air (A Talk Radio Mystery, #1) by Mary Kennedy in January and liked it. I have Reel Murder A Talk Radio Mystery by Mary Kennedy in The Pile and should get to it in July.

message 209: by Mary (new)

Mary Kennedy | 27 comments Thank you so much, Melodie!! I was invited to talk about REEL MURDER on the COSMO show on Sirius Radio and it was great fun. My "17 minutes of fame" went whizzing by, but it was wonderful to chat with Kenny Z and Taylor on the Wake Up with Taylor Show. They invited me into Manhattan to the studio for the next release, Stay Tuned for Murder, which is coming out in October.

message 210: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments I will be looking for Reel Murder, too, as I liked Dead Air. Thank you Mary for book #3 coming out so fast. I hate waiting a year between books. Did you have a bunch of previously unpublished work or do you just write quickly?

message 211: by Mary (new)

Mary Kennedy | 27 comments Hi Shay, my whole publishing history was in MG (middle grade) and young adult novels. I wrote 34 MG and YA novels for Scholastic, some were series, some were stand-alones and quite a few were work for hire. Then, more recently, I wrote three YA's for Penguin, Confessions of an Almost Movie Star, Tales of a Hollywood Gossip Queen, and Secrets of a South Beach Princess. I love to read mysteries and thought it might be fun to combine psychology (my "day job") with my background in radio. And throw in a murder, of course. So I came up with the Talk Radio Mysteries. I used to work as a copywriter for WKDA in Nashville, Tenn, and that's how I came up with the setting for WYME radio in Florida. Oh and yes, I do write fast. I think it's the advertising background that taught me that. I had 90 accounts to write for, when I worked in radio, and from there I moved to television ads and wrote for the CBS affiliate in Nashville. Thanks for asking! Glad you liked DEAD AIR!

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Leslie wrote: "Melodie..what thriller group are you in?"

It's called M/T Reading Friends. The core group has been together for over 10 years. We started on AOL years ago and migrated over here when AOL started screwing with their boards last spring. It's a good group and several of us have met at Bouchercons and the like. We all list our monthly reads every month and then we do a thing at the end of the year where we each person picks their top 10 mysteries, top 10 "everything else", top 10 authors and most disappointing books of the year. One of the gals on the board tallies them all up and we come up with the yearly top 10 taken from everyone's picks.

Tammy Welcome back, Kim.

Welcome, Arica.

message 233: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolee888) I am Carol. I just retired last year and love it! I read most everything except paranornal, vampire and regular romance. When I am feeling off, cozies are my comfort food! Think I am addicted to them. I really love those that I can learn a little bit about something as a bonus. But don't think there is a cozy that I could ever turn down. I live north of Dallas. We moved after I retired.

(Of course, then I went on a 4th of July weekend vacation, my car broke down and now I'm at my sister's and the car is in the shop in another town and I have to get my sister to take me back in a couple days because of course they had to ORDER the parts! Sheesh!). But welcome back, Kim and welcome Carol! Hopefully I'll be posting more after I get back home with better access to the computer. : /

message 239: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cwsmith) I've been lurking here in Cozy Mysteries for a while .... I do IT work at a small university and like to read multiple books at once. I always have a cozy going ... they are my comfort food. But I like biographies, current nonfiction, Sue Grafton and Janet Evanovich. I don't like paranormal themes (but did listen to the first three Twilight books-they were OK) or romance. I have trouble with "serious" fiction. Not sure why. I'm enjoying GoodReads as a way to expand my horizons. There are so many books out there, no time to waste on ones that get bad reviews!

message 240: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments Hello Cindy. Paranormal is not usually my genre either :)

message 241: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mkirias) | 3 comments Hi, my name is Michelle. I currently live in PA. I love to read! I have a very eclectic taste, but one of my favorite authors is Janet Evanovich. I also enjoy Gayle Trent, and I look forward to expanding to other cozy mystery authors. I teach sixth grade students and love my job! I have four cats, and honestly thats about it! Haha! I look forward to becoming a bit more active :)

message 247: by Helen (new)

Helen | 17 comments Hi all,

I never really knew there was a genre called "cozy mysteries". I have always enjoyed Agatha Christie books .... but have never really dallied into the "cozier" modern series until I read the first two Agatha Raisin books ....

It is a nice break from other crime styles and a great way to spend winter nights here in New Zealand .......

I'm looking forward to reading many more.

Hoping I can get some recommendations here ....

Helen
