Becca (goblinfan) | 215 comments I just found out that there is a short story/novella that takes place between Wraith and Spectre. That would definitely explain some of the gaps from what I remember of Wraith. Its been a couple of years since I read the first book, but some of what's referenced in Spectre threw me.
As I've been reading Spectre, I keep thinking, 'why didn't I pick this up sooner?' I love the author's style, and humor. I actually had a giggling fit earlier that made me stop reading for a few minutes. I've been zipping threw this one.

I have heard about that story, but just haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

message 353: by Valorie (new)

Valorie I love the Phaedra Weldon books also! I've read both Wraith and Spectre and really enjoyed them. I haven't had a chance to jump into Phantasm yet.

Damn, there are so many good books that are not in audio book format. I"ll have to fallback on the dead tree editions.

Chelsea (vampirebookclub) | 45 comments I finished The Iron King and LOVED it. Epic fantasy with dark tones. (my review)

Picked up Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane today. Will begin devouring here in a few. I'm very excited for this series.

Have you considered getting used books when you can't find what you're looking for in audio? I can understand the aversion to buying new books for environmental reasons. I like to think of it as giving an old book a new home :)

message 359: by Becca (new)

Becca (goblinfan) | 215 comments I received The Vampire Files: Vol 2 by P. N. Elrod in the mail today, and started it soon after. Even though I'm almost finished with Spectre, I just couldn't wait to start this one.

Xin Li | 25 comments Becca wrote: Have you considered getting used books when you can't find what you're looking for in audio?

I actually ended up getting the Kindle version, which is even more environmentally friendly (maybe). I'm reading it now. So good. I feel an immediate connection to her, just two chapters into it. Old book swaps is a good idea too! I'll keep that in mind.

message 361: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (vampirebookclub) | 45 comments Almost done with Unholy Ghosts (Downside Ghosts, #1) by Stacia Kane and wow. The second I finish, I'll be starting the next book (released yesterday), Unholy Magic (Downside Ghosts, #2) by Stacia Kane .

The heroine is totally unexpected, the pacing perfect and the story utterly engaging. I may be falling in love with Stacia Kane.

Harlequin Books (harlequinbooks) | 23 comments I'm finally getting a chance to read Hard Magic (Paranormal Scene Investigations, #1) by Laura Anne Gilman ! It has been on the top of my TBR pile for way to long but I had company so haven't read much lately.

I didn't care much for BONE CROSSED either. I ranked it the lowest of the series, so far. SILVER BORNE definitely redeems the series!

The Nightside is one of my favorite series, too, but
The Good, the Bad, and the Uncanny (Nightside, #10) by Simon R. Green is probably one of my least favorites.

message 374: by jD (new)

jD (jd_4everbooked) | 67 comments I feel you. This is the second time I have checked it out of the library. For some reason, I am not getting into this particular one. I keep hoping that the magic will kick in. It appears that Simon Green is doing with his "Golden Torc" series what he used to do so well with the Nightside. I hope he is not becoming bored with his own creation.

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) I am still reading A Kiss of Shadows (Meredith Gentry, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton Kissing Sin (Riley Jenson Guardian, #2) by Keri Arthur and started Wolf at the Door (The Others, #1) by Christine Warren

Amen sister on the "Seth's extremely boring" comment! I like Mead...but not the Succubus series (although I did read them all).

message 377: by Sasa (new)

Sasa (sasaboba) After hearing so much about her, I finally started Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton. I'm only okay with it so far but it's got some intrigue. Hopefully, it will get really exciting :3

message 378: by Dija (new)

Dija Just started Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger

@Tina: I actually do like the Succubus books; except for Seth, the other characters are very unique and interesting. The books I've read so far have more to the plot than Seth+Georgina, so I've loved the books, but I'm sure I won't like them as much if Seth becomes the center of the plot.

I especially have a soft spot for Carter and Jerome. There wasn't enough of them in the first and second books of the series. :(

The Anita Blake books are great up thru OBSIDIAN BUTTERFLY and then NARCISSUS IN CHAINS is okay. After that.....forget it!

message 382: by Yodamom (last edited Jul 10, 2010 11:14AM) (new)

Yodamom I just finished Blood Legacy The Story of Ryan by Kerri Hawkins Fantastic tale of Mystery. It felt like CSI meets vamp? A well respected research Dr. comes into contact with women/being that has some very odd test results, and brain waves a random heart beat but she's dead ? These test draw her into a world she could have never though possible before, challenging her every belief. The "women ?" has a long and dark past which she shares with Dr. the mystery gets deeper.....Written with intelligence with strong world building.
I can't wait for the next book in this trilogy
I finished Infinity (Chronicles of Nick, #1) by Sherrilyn Kenyon (YA) is is about Nick Gautier as a young teen when he first hooked up with Kyrian. It is full of snarky comments and background information on Ash, Kryian, Nick, his mother and some other squires. I loved it. Great for the Dark Hunter fan

I'd say it's plot. Not because the plots are bad, but because they're nearly non-existent! And the writing standard goes in the toilet.

message 386: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (vampirebookclub) | 45 comments Finished Unholy Magic (Downside Ghosts, #2) by Stacia Kane this afternoon. Wow, just wow. I'm so in love with this series. The ending was enough to make me pre-order the third book, City of Ghosts, immediately. (BTW, the love triangle gets revved up in the second book. Very tense.)

Yes and it felt like Laurell became sex-obsessed somewhere around the time she wrote Narcissis because the writing between sex scenes seemed to be just to set up a reason (not even a good reason) for the next sex scene!

I don't necessarily have a problem with sex but if there isn't any substance or a plot direction to it then...yeah, no...well, now that I think about it, sex doesn't necessarily ever have to have a plot direction...but if it dwindles from her other books like that then..nyeehh...I don't know. I'm still going to give it a try just to see how I'd like it but I won't blame you if I hate it XD

I totally agree with you, but I have been called on that point several times on other boards. I think the "ardeur" is total bullshit, but there are some who feel that it alone is the plot point. Maybe if it were written better I could somewhat see it. But when it's written like really bad Penthouse Forum entries I will beg to differ every time.

I actually found it to be a tough read, and had I not been reading it with someone I probably would have given it up. I keep comparing it to the Sirantha Jax series, which IMO is better. I will read the second book and it will be a make or break book for me, but just not rush right out to get it.

Well, I read it before the Sirantha Jax series which might explain why I didn't notice that. Too bad you didn't care for it. :)

Like so many others have said, I totally agree with you.
I have to admit though, that I've kept up with them until the last two. I'm just waiting to find Flirt and Bullet used and really cheap. Skin Trade was slightly improved. I'm a little saddened that the quality of the books has gone down hill but I'm still a fan. What can I say? I have low standards.

Becca (goblinfan) | 215 comments I started listening to Storm Front read by James Marsters, and I have to say its pretty good so far. I like his voice, it's very relaxing. He reads the other characters dialogue very well, a noticeable difference and effort to convey the character. I think I'll keep an eye to find the next book on audio as well, though they are pretty expensive. To me anyway.

message 396: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (vampirebookclub) | 45 comments Read the Iron Fey novella Winter's Passage (Iron Fey, #1.5) by Julie Kagawa on a plane today and then started Kill Me Again (Secrets of Shadow Falls, #2) by Maggie Shayne .

While I adored The Iron King, I don't think Winter's Passage is really necessary reading before The Iron Daughter (U.S. release date: Aug. 1). A nice something to fill the time, but my gut says it's not vital to the overall story. It's a fun little 50-page read.

I almost started Darkfever, but wonder if I should wait until, like, November. Everyone says I will want to devour this series and then be all angry about waiting until December for the final novel. Thoughts??

Check your library. That is where I get most of my audio books. You can even load them on your i-pod. I do that and then delete them when I am done.

If you haven't started yet, I would wait. They are good and have super bad cliff hangers. The last book just got pushed back to a January release, FYI.

Thanks for the suggestion, I may have to do that. Though I doubt the local library would have them. I will have to give the library in the P.O.S. town I can't stand a go for them. >:(
