I completed the monthly read Aerenden: The Child Returns
and really enjoyed it. I know Kristen was nice enough to offer a free code but if you missed out on that I can also lend the kindle version if anyone is interested. Karen - the audiobook narrator has an awesome voice just FYI since I know you also love audiobooks :)
I am still listening to Shadow Throne and hope to start
Going Rogue on audiobook afterwards.

Thanks, Heidi :). I really feel like I'm behind because I can't seem to get into Audio books. They distract me in the car, so I'm not sure where else is a good place to listen. Any advice?
I can only listen to certain types of audiobooks Kristen and in certain places. I can NOT listen at all while on the computer or at work. I can only listen to mostly YA and cozy mysteries on audiobook because they seem easier to follow. I would recommend you start with a book you have already read and liked first BUT make sure it is good on audiobook. If your library or you have an audiobook in mind please ask and if I have listened to it I will tell you if it is a good one. Otherwise I have a shelf dedicated to audio I love so you can check there and see if there is a book you have already read. Lastly, don't worry if you space out from time to time while listening. I do it all the time and still get the main gist of what is going on. If you loved Harry Potter that is always my first audiobook recommendation btw.

Oooh...thanks :). I did love HP, so I'll have to check that out. Appreciate it :)

Oh, good to know, Heidi! I see it's $1.99 on whispersync if you own the Kindle copy. What a deal!!

I found you can even gift it for that price. I have no idea why Amazon chose to do the $1.99 listing (I can't set the price or I'd do the same thing for the second book), but I wasn't about to email them and ask and maybe mess up a good thing! *whistles and looks the other way*

LOL. I did the same thing. I saw it and went, "OOOH...SALE!" & I bought a copy for my mom, my sister, and a couple of bloggers I know who like audio books. Because it's something like 90% off!
I might be addicted to sales :D.
Thank you, by the way; I really hope you enjoy it. I'm biased, of course, but I love Karen's voice, too (Karen Savage is my voice actor for the series).

It was pretty good but ... I don't know, it didn't really live up to the hype for me. I think Andrew Smith is awesome and I had really high expectations after reading Winger which I thought was fantastic ... but I found it kind of difficult to get into this one for some reason. Maybe I just need to process it for a little while though. Ehh.

I've really been wanting to pick this one up for a while so I'm hoping it's good. I've only read a couple of chapters and it's really confusing so far ... but I assume it'll get less so ... ?

still in love with Daine! and the more I read the more excited I get for the new Numair book to come out :D
and got quite a bit more of

I'm really liking that one now. seems like it just takes me a bit to get into certain books, especially when they're so hyped -- DOSB was similar but I fell in love with the language. Cinder is good; I like that it's a retelling of Cinderella, because for being a futuristic/sci-fi book it's nice to have it grounded in familiarity in that respect.

The official definition of steampunk: A subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an anachronistic Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. It could be described by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." It includes fiction with science fiction, fantasy or horror themes.
So most steampunk takes place in a historical setting, with futuristic elements. Crazy inventions and time travel is really popular.

sci-fi and more futuristic books generally aren't my thing either, probably why I'm surprised I like it as much as I do -- but like I said, she does keep it pretty grounded so the reader's not lost. I liked the inclusion of the old beat-up car in the junkyard.

I actually don't care for dystopian, oddly, but love Sci-Fi. There are always exceptions, of course (Hunger Games being one). Does Cinder fall under the standard Dystopian outline or is it different in some way?

Heidi *Listen. I'll just keep talking anyway. * wrote: "I would say Cinder is more sci fi than dystopian. There are space ships and everything Kristen!"
Fantastic; thanks. That's more my style :).

I am not disagreeing with your Ashley - I thought Kristen wanted to know which way it was leaning more towards (dystopian or sci fi) with her question so that is what I was I meant by my answer. I could be wrong! wouldn't be the first time.

I think for me Dystopian is more slave society/dehumanization to the point of grim existence vs. the struggle of good and evil inherent to much of Sci-fi, though it's often a fine line that separates these. My gripe with Dystopian is it often seems to be the same general story line, with a future Earth society divided into regions and only the "rulers" living an existence that even remotely resembles anything other than poverty (such as Hunger Games, though as I said, I did enjoy it). It winds up becoming a rather black and white society in many of the books, which is what doesn't appeal to me. I'm more of a multi-layer kind of reader. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Dystopian or they're always like that; it just isn't for me in most instances.
If I recall, Dystopian is technically a sub-genre of science-fiction, isn't it?

Kristen if it makes you feel better I generally end up disliking a lot of Dystopian books (not all but most) and I loved Cinder. It is just different from a lot of other books out there IMO. Hard to categorize as you can tell by this discussion! hahaha

No problem. I would recommend it on audio book because I liked it on audio but I know you are on the fence about audio books for now so still think you should start with a book you have already read. Either way I hope you like it!

Half Bad, you mean? :D And uhhh to be honest I'm not really sure even though I'm like 9% of the way into the book ... so far it's super confusing. But from what I gather, there seems to be some kind of society where there are magicians divided by white and black magic or something? I'll let you know more once I'm further into it ... Hopefully it will start to make more sense.

Re: Cinder - I would classify it as sci-fi over dystopia––it's heavy on futuristic technology, interplanetary travel, etc. But it is still a dystopia since it does involve a pretty corrupted society and class issues and whatnot. I mean, I think it's what a dystopia should be like ... There are just a lot of books nowadays that label themselves as such even if the focus of the story isn't really on the dystopia aspect or on fleshing out the world/society at all.

See Kristen? Cinder is just in a league of it's own. I hope we are not building you up for a let down!
Brigid I guess I will skip Half *Bad* Life for now! Hope it gets better.

I'm a bit further into it now and have mixed feelings about it ... I'm starting to like it more, but I feel like the pacing is really rushed and the main character kind of annoys me for some reason. But I'll let you know if I end up liking it. ;)

& taking Code Name Verity on an overnight NY trip tonight!

Finished reading

Today starting

Great sounds interesting Jenny. Hope you love I Am the Messenger! I have a total crush on the audiobook narrator for that book.

Who does it?
Some unknown Kristen! I looked him up afterwards because I am crazy interested but at the time there was nothing and that was only book he narrated. It has been awhile so he may have more info now. He is an Aussie and I tend to like them narrating pretty much everything!
I set up the monthly group read thread for Okay for Now. I am excited to see others thoughts on this one. For those who liked my Around the World book I think you will also enjoy this one :) https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Awesome! I plan to start it this week (well, actually, I planned to start it last week but my schedule got away from me :D)

I just downloaded the audible copy. I usually love your narrator crushes. ;)
@Ashley - Scarlet and Code Name Verity are both awesome books! Hope you enjoy them!
@Jenny - Huh, Great sounds really interesting. I hadn't heard of that one but I'll look into it. And oooh I love I Am The Messenger!
Well, I'm still reading:
I'm almost halfway through and it's gotten a bit better, but I don't know ... Maybe my expectations for it were too high (because the blurb compared it to Markus Zusak and Patrick Ness) but I'm finding it just okay for the most part. I'm hoping it picks up a bit in the second half.
I also started:
Because I got a signed ARC from BEA (and I met Scott Westerfeld and he said he'd heard of my review blog––AAHHHHHHHHH *screams forever*)! I've only read like 30 pages of it and ... hmmm it's very different from his other books so far. But it's also huge and I have a lot of it left, haha. So I'm eager to see where it goes.
Edit: Oh yeah I forgot ... Also on my super long bus ride to/from NYC, I read:
Which was okay, but I don't think I'll bother with the rest of the series.
And I also re-read:
Even more amazing the third time. ;)
