I don't think there was a book Jackie Brown - just a character and a series of events in, I think, Rum Punch.

I got turned off of Leonard after Pagan Babies.

Julie (gpangel) | 148 comments You are so right about Rum Punch. I just can't quit calling it Jackie Brown, I guess because of the movie. I've never read the book you mentioned.

Julie (gpangel) | 148 comments The first two seasons are on DVD. There are only about 13 episodes in each season. Leonard is one of the producers. It's a little different from the books. But it's one of the best shows on TV.

Try also the Dr. Siri Paiboun series; the first is The Coroner's Lunch. I, too, love #1 Ladies and the Carrion Death series.

Allison Brennan (abwrites) I read TWISTED last month by Laura Griffin. Good, solid romantic suspense. Then I had a deadline and didn't read anything for a month (sad, I know!) I just started I HUNT KILLERS a YA thriller by Barry Lyga, and an ARC by a debut author.

Marilyn Maya (mayaswords) | 0 comments Hi Julie,
I won't watch the series until I finish all the Nero Wolfe books. I love Archie. He is so funny and the words of the book are wonderful. Words are underated in books today. How they are put together make a book sing to me Aloha

Julie (gpangel) | 148 comments I agree. They don't capture it the same way these days. Nero has his issues and is so fussy. But, he's got a great mind. Stout was maybe a little under rated.

Barbara - have you tried any of Martin Cruz Smith's, Arcady Renko series? It's set in Russia as well and Renko is a Moscow police officer. It's a fantastic series. I've enjoyed every book so far.. You might want to try it. Gorky Park is the first in the series.

Thanks for the reco, Genine. Doesn't Cotterill have another series set in Thailand... or Malayasia? Something about the Whim of a Hat I think. Carrion Death reminds me a litt of Malla Nunn's first book, A Beautiful Place To Die, set in South Africa.

Hi Renee. I just started A Carrion Death and I'm really enjoying it. Got right into the story and characters plus a very interesting description of the African countryside.

Regarding Cotterill, I've really enjoyed a number of the Dr. Siri books but haven't had a chance to read Killed At The Whim Of A Hat. Have your read it?

A-HA! That was the title! Thank you!

I did read it and really enjoyed it. The same sense of humor as Dr. Siri's books with a young female erstwhile journalist trapped with her quirky family in some resort backwater. And then a VW bus with two skeleton's is found underground. And that's at the beginning so I'm spoiling nothing for you: it's just the start of the fun.

Ava Catherine I just finished A Very Simple Crime by Grant Jerkins Grant Jerkins. It is a tightly written novel of suspense with several surprising twists that I did not see coming at the end.

Rachel, I am really enjoying Gone Girl. It keeps twisting and turning in fascinating ways. I am fully engaged and cannot wait to find out what happens next!

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Since my last update:

Finished:

Worth Dying For (Jack Reacher, #15) by Lee Child Worth Dying For, 61 Hours (Jack Reacher, #14) by Lee Child 61 Hours and Persuader (Jack Reacher, #7) by Lee Child Persuader, all by Lee Child. On a Reacher roll, always like Reacher, but I have to admit reading his later books all in a row brings his recurrent formula of "town in trouble" into stark relief. I'd probably like them a teensy bit better if I spaced them out and didn't notice that so much. Hasn't stopped me from starting another one, though-- in my "currently reading," below.

The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley The Rose Garden
I liked this more than I thought I would-- I was just on the point of thinking she was going to wind it up as a typical time-travel romance when she changed it up at the end in a couple ways I never saw coming. Good book!

Finished The Ghost and the Dead Deb (Haunted Bookshop Mystery, #2) by Alice Kimberly The Ghost and the Dead Deb -- I just love the ghost. And I like how the author has sort of cleverly expanded his abilities. Be reading more of these.

Absolutely, Positively (Lucy Valentine, #3) by Heather Webber Absolutely, Positively which I was able to read without a pang now that I know the series isn't ending and the new one is out!

Currently reading:

11/22/63 by Stephen King 11/22/63 which is enthralling although I'm taking it slow and reading other things alongside,

One Shot (Jack Reacher, #9) by Lee Child One Shot -said I was on a Reacher trip... And

The Poet (Jack McEvoy, #1) by Michael Connelly The Poet which I think I read about 14 years ago but have no memory of. I'm enjoying it but I think I might like Bosch better. We'll see.

message 7042: by Julie (new)

Julie (gpangel) | 148 comments Yes, these are dated. I believe that one was published almost 50 years ago. A lot has changed since then. I read and collect the old Gothic romance /Mystery novels and run across that same issue at times. Good books, but you have to try not to let the sexism get in the way. Not all of Stouts books are that way.
