No, I haven't seen Justified, though I have heard good comments about it.. Unfortunately, I do not get FX.

Try also the Dr. Siri Paiboun series; the first is The Coroner's Lunch. I, too, love #1 Ladies and the Carrion Death series.

That genre is found in aisle 7, the testosterone aisle at your local bookstore."
(snort). Need a price check on aisle 7!

Good luck with Child 44. Hope you enjoy. I read it last year and enjoyed a fair bit."
Thanks Bill. The book really provides a gruesome picture of life in Stalinist Russia.

I'll see if I can find the DVDs in town. Thanks for the tip.

I won't watch the series until I finish all the Nero Wolfe books. I love Archie. He is so funny and the words of the book are wonderful. Words are underated in books today. How they are put together make a book sing to me Aloha

Thanks Julie,
I agree and am so happy I joined this group to learn about writers who appreciate the language and make it readable for us.

Barbara - have you tried any of Martin Cruz Smith's, Arcady Renko series? It's set in Russia as well and Renko is a Moscow police officer. It's a fantastic series. I've enjoyed every book so far.. You might want to try it. Gorky Park is the first in the series.

HAHAHA!!! Now that's funny!!

Thanks for the reco, Genine. Doesn't Cotterill have another series set in Thailand... or Malayasia? Something about the Whim of a Hat I think. Carrion Death reminds me a litt of Malla Nunn's first book, A Beautiful Place To Die, set in South Africa.
Hi Renee. I just started A Carrion Death and I'm really enjoying it. Got right into the story and characters plus a very interesting description of the African countryside.
Regarding Cotterill, I've really enjoyed a number of the Dr. Siri books but haven't had a chance to read Killed At The Whim Of A Hat. Have your read it?

A-HA! That was the title! Thank you!
I did read it and really enjoyed it. The same sense of humor as Dr. Siri's books with a young female erstwhile journalist trapped with her quirky family in some resort backwater. And then a VW bus with two skeleton's is found underground. And that's at the beginning so I'm spoiling nothing for you: it's just the start of the fun.

I thought it was some Hollywood idea of a joke created over tequila shots and ganja.

how is Gone Girl? it sounds really interesting.

I ended up liking that one, Erin. ..."
I am about 3/4 of the way thru and really liking it now!

That's a book? Have to check it out. I know the movie came out.

Rachel, I am really enjoying Gone Girl. It keeps twisting and turning in fascinating ways. I am fully engaged and cannot wait to find out what happens next!

Me too!

Starting Mudbound for a group read here on Goodreads.

Thanks again Bill. I've read some of Martin Cruz Smith's books and I enjoyed them - good mysteries. His books also give a bleak picture of life in Soviet Russia. Makes me very glad I didn't there.

Life in post Soviet Russia was no dance around the Maypole either [Cruz's books]. I particularly liked
Wolves Eat Dogs

I liked this more than I thought I would-- I was just on the point of thinking she was going to wind it up as a typical time-travel romance when she changed it up at the end in a couple ways I never saw coming. Good book!

I enjoyed Wolves Eat Dogs too, Ken. Mind you, I've enjoyed all of the Arcady Renko stories. It's a different unique setting. Havana Bay was particularly good as I recall too.

Gone Girl sounds like my kind of book- i'm definitely going to read it sooner rather than later (trying to prioritize my to read list lol)

Should that be on this page or the self promotion page, just wondering :)

It's an interesting twist on a genre for sure. I'm only a fourth of a way in.

Finished:

Those three are probably my 3 favorite of Lee Child though The Affair and Killing Floor are very good too. The Poet is my favorite book from Connelly.

Finished:

The Poet was the first Michael Connelly book I ever read. Made me want to read more and started me off on the Harry Bosch series.

I don't think there was a book Jackie Brown - just a character and a series of events in, I think, Rum Punch.
I got turned off of Leonard after Pagan Babies.
