This is a series where the individual books can be read as standalones but the first book Picture Miss Seeton is the one that establishes all the main characters and the setting/situation. It also happens to be my personal favorite ...

Marilyn Maya (mayaswords) | 0 comments I am amazed at how current her book seems. She gives her views on women's issues that feels very modern and current. Can't believe it was written in the 30's. I love her too.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) No cozies at the moment. More hard-core stuff-- The Concrete Blonde The Concrete Blonde (Harry Bosch, #3) by Michael Connelly , One Shot One Shot (Jack Reacher, #9) by Lee Child , and 11/22/63 11/22/63 by Stephen King . I guess this last isn't really a mystery but it feels like one where I'm at in the book because he's trying to change a history that is of course very familiar to me into something unknown.

Started Prince Of Fire by Daniel Silva after completing Forfeit by Dick Francis, which was a bit of a boring read for me, so looking forward to enjoying "PRINCE OF FIRE".

I had read a couple of Sayers, Whose Body? and Strong Poison. Strong Poison reminded me strongly of Sad Cypress of Agatha Christie. The modus operandi of the culprits of both the books were very similar to each other.

Marilyn Maya (mayaswords) | 0 comments I have read a chapter of Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante It is scary to me not only because of the story which is original but I guess if you are over 60, it is all too real a scenario. I find it a bit depressing as well but I have to finish it. I can tell. Still have my schedule. Reading Gaudy Night (Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, #12) by Dorothy L. Sayers when I can in the late afternooon and evening and finishing The Sugar House by Laura Lippman late night. Now I have to find time for turn of mind. Wish there were more hours in the day. Aloha

Anirban - Agatha Christie is another author I haven't read a great many books by, but I've been starting to reintroduce myself to her writing this past year. I'm finding the stories with these older detectives; Agatha Christie's Poirot or Marple, Elizabeth Daly's Henry Gamadge and now maybe, Dorothy Sayer's Lord Wimsey, nicely engaging and comforting..

I still have that one to read and looking forward to it. Instead I have just finished
Wicked Business (Lizzy & Diesel, #2) by Janet Evanovich , a nice follow up book featuring Diesel, Lizzy and of course Carl the monkey. Sometimes I really need to read a nice light story like these.

Now I've just started reading The Yard by Alex Grecian .

I love to read Agatha Christie, definitely one of my favorite authors. I started reading them way back in 1998, when I was in 6th standard. My school library was full of Agatha Christie books. I have read Sayers and Ngaio Marsh, but for me, I guess among the three queens of crime, Agatha Chrisite would be the best.

I've also been reading the Ngaio Marsh books and have enjoyed them too. I must say, I also have enjoyed the Poirot and Marple TV mysteries as well as the Alleyn mysteries. They are always entertaining...

Georgia | 554 comments Just finished Hide (Detective D. D. Warren Series #2) by Lisa Gardner by Lisa Gardner. Many of you have said you liked her so I tried her for the second time. Many said they liked D. D. Warren. She was hardly present in this book about a family always on the run. She does write well and is engrossing, sometimes leaves you "up in the air" I would give this book 3 stars. Good but not great.

Marilyn Maya (mayaswords) | 0 comments I finished Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante and I have to say this was a very depressing book to me. I did finish it in one day but I couldn't relate to any of the characters and felt the ending was expected yet sad. I know I might be the minority but I think I will stick to the mysteries that take me on vacations not nightmares. The author is talented. I will say that. Back to the 30's with pleasure.

(laughing). It's "Twilight", only the dark secret our hero is keeping is NOT that he's a sparkly vampire, but, instead, he's a twisted soul who likes to beat and have sex with brown haired little girls who remind him of his mommy. Our heroine, Anastasia Steele, so resembles Bella Swan that it smacks of plagiarism. The book even takes place in Washington state. I think I've already posted here that I thought it was YA fare when I downloaded it...and, no, I have no idea how I came up with that...I blame senility. Boy, did I ever get a wake up call with this one! Boy howdy!!!

message 7181: by Julie (new)

Julie (gpangel) | 148 comments LOL! I haven't read it, but I don't think you're the first one that thought it was YA. Also, it's my understanding that the Twilight similarly was intentional but they changed up some things once the book was published to keep from getting sued. I don't know all the details, it's just something I read about the series somewhere. I'm still on the fence about reading it.

Sofia (fivesunflowers) | 58 comments Just started reading Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) by E.L. James , six chapters in and I have to admit that I don't thin I've read such garbage in a very long time, if ever. A young virgin woman with ZERO self-esteem just GIDDY at the thought of this Christian Grey controlling, self-absorbed, a**hole, commanding her around like a scolding father. I will read the whole thing, but it always amazes me what the usual NON-reading public finds fascinating. Blegh.

That is so true, I won't read it. I don't think it is erotic for a man to order a woman around. I've lived it and it isn't fun no matter how good the man is in bed or how handsome he thinks he is lol

Just finished The Eagle Catcher by Margaret Coel. Listened to this one and I did enjoy it. Nice mix of Araphao history and culture and murder mystery. I'm a big fan of Tony Hillerman so I found this interesting.

One annoyance with the reader, who actually did a nice job, why, since most of the story is told from the perspective of male characters with male characters speaking did they pick a female to read the book? Still, I would listen to another is this series.

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) I'm about 2/3 through The Concrete Blonde and am thoroughly enjoying it although in its own way it's a time-travel exercise, because there have been so many Bosch's since.... I'm really liking 11/22/63 too, although I got yanked out of the story abruptly today by two anachronisms in the space of about 25 pages! Stevie, boy, where was your editor!?

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Decided to have a bit of fun reading Fifty Shades of Garbage - Allie Beck. See if this is any fun lol x

There she sat, the coffee cup half full and likely cold, gripping that damn book again. Joe had come home from work for three days in a row now this week to find Marcia sitting on the couch, legs curled under her, the dim light of the end table lamp casting a glow on her enthralled form, reading a book with a necktie on it.

actually, it would be more apt for her to be whispering "oh gawd, not again!", "grrrrrr", or "what are you? Rabbits???"
