I just finished the latest in the Maisie Dobbs series, Elegy for Eddie. It lives up to the standard set by the earlier books. This time Maisie must keep a foot in two worlds as a daughter of poor London and a woman of wealth and standing. Innocent--truly, heartbreakingly innocent--people become collateral damage as rumors of war and the antics of the Hitler as the German chancellor seep into British consciousness. The era between the wars has style, sure. But Maisie also has depth.

I have found the post-WWI reality of Britain to be interesting in terms of what they call 'shell-shock' and we now call PTSD and how the world goes on around us in the shadow of war, the far away specter of war and the attempts to rebuild life post-war.

Yes, read Nathan's Run a long time ago. It was that book that made me a fan of John Gilstrap. This current book is pretty good too.

Yes i enjoyed this as well, the movie i mean. reminds me of Erin Brockovich's story except the latter was true to life and they got paid in the end.

Let's see...I finished Stay Close a week ago or so. It was okay, but not Coben's best effort in my opinion. I automatically become turned off on novels that have evil supposedly Christian psycho bad guys. It's a device that's used entirely too often these days, and I wish authors would just use their imaginations and find some other horse to whip. It's just my own opinion, and I don't expect others to back me up, but I'm no longer intrigued by evil priests, wacked out, fundamental, Bible-thumping rapists, mentally disturbed, backwoods, alcoholic, tent revival preachers who terrorize their flocks, or, in this particular book, blonde, blue-eyed, killer preppies who supplement their earnings as Christian summer camp counselors with murder for hire. Please, authors, move on.

This week I completed Stolen Prey, another fabulous effort by John Sandford. I always love to catch up with Lucas and his fellow cast of characters. This one, thankfully, featured no sex crazed nuns or televangelists secretly connected with al-Qaeda and bent on domestic terrorism. Thanks, Mr. Sandford!

I thought Even Steven was meh. I have not read Scott Free. I'm almost done with No Mercy and have to say I'm really liking it. I will read the sequel to this one.

Finished and would like to read more by this author, hope he's planning a series. Definitely thriller rather than mystery and an interesting location (Thailand) and culture that I found intriguing.

I completely agree Jeanie. I liked "Stay Close" and thought it was a better novel than "Defending Jacob" but some originality regarding the bad guy de jour is always a good idea and always welcome...I'm looking forward to reading "Stolen Prey" soon as well....... Ed

I read the Eve Duncan series & really enjoyed it, although it was slightly repetitive at times. The end of the series was great though! Also, how are you like the Bones & Jack Reacher series? Both of those are books I'd like to read!

I love the Bones series. It isn't like the TV show, if you have seen that. I find the books are better. She's more interesting in the series than the TV show.

The Reacher series, I just started. I LOVED the first book; "The Killing Floor." It gripped me with the first opening paragraph. This one I'm currently reading hasn't really gripped me yet. My boss loves this series and said there really isn't a bad book in the lot.

You might try The Devotion of Suspect X. I really enjoyed it: a murder and a cover-up and a psychological labyrinth.

I'm caught in the Robert B. Parker "Spenser Series" and I can't get out! I take them from the library 7 at a time, reserving the next 7 at the same time. They remind me of MacDonald's Travis McGee. Delightful and heartwarming. SO glad Parker's "Jesse Stone" series waits in the wings.

I agree with Spenser and McGee being a bit similar ... mindset? attitude? and every so often I have to go back and re-read the entire series of both.

I envy you being able to read the Spenser series for the first time!

I'm still reading "Buried Prey" by John Sanford. It gets better as you read it. I like the detective Lucas. I have lived in the Twin Cities and he really brings that to his books and makes his characters interesting. I will let you know how the end turns out. aloha
