Currently Reading? Just Finished?
I finished The Rainmaker by John Grisham, an excellent courtroom thriller. The movie, with Matt Damon, was good as well.
I just finished the latest in the Maisie Dobbs series, Elegy for Eddie. It lives up to the standard set by the earlier books. This time Maisie must keep a foot in two worlds as a daughter of poor London and a woman of wealth and standing. Innocent--truly, heartbreakingly innocent--people become collateral damage as rumors of war and the antics of the Hitler as the German chancellor seep into British consciousness. The era between the wars has style, sure. But Maisie also has depth. I have found the post-WWI reality of Britain to be interesting in terms of what they call 'shell-shock' and we now call PTSD and how the world goes on around us in the shadow of war, the far away specter of war and the attempts to rebuild life post-war.

I might have to try it, I found Even Steven, okay and didn't like Scott Free so I hope this one is better :)
Barbara wrote: "I finished The Rainmaker by John Grisham, an excellent courtroom thriller. The movie, with Matt Damon, was good as well."Yes i enjoyed this as well, the movie i mean. reminds me of Erin Brockovich's story except the latter was true to life and they got paid in the end.
Let's see...I finished Stay Close a week ago or so. It was okay, but not Coben's best effort in my opinion. I automatically become turned off on novels that have evil supposedly Christian psycho bad guys. It's a device that's used entirely too often these days, and I wish authors would just use their imaginations and find some other horse to whip. It's just my own opinion, and I don't expect others to back me up, but I'm no longer intrigued by evil priests, wacked out, fundamental, Bible-thumping rapists, mentally disturbed, backwoods, alcoholic, tent revival preachers who terrorize their flocks, or, in this particular book, blonde, blue-eyed, killer preppies who supplement their earnings as Christian summer camp counselors with murder for hire. Please, authors, move on.This week I completed Stolen Prey, another fabulous effort by John Sandford. I always love to catch up with Lucas and his fellow cast of characters. This one, thankfully, featured no sex crazed nuns or televangelists secretly connected with al-Qaeda and bent on domestic terrorism. Thanks, Mr. Sandford!
Donna wrote: "I might have to try it, I found Even Steven, okay and didn't like Scott Free so I hope this one is better :)"I thought Even Steven was meh. I have not read Scott Free. I'm almost done with No Mercy and have to say I'm really liking it. I will read the sequel to this one.
Finished
and would like to read more by this author, hope he's planning a series. Definitely thriller rather than mystery and an interesting location (Thailand) and culture that I found intriguing. Will say that I shall never think about crocodile or alligator 'farms' again in quite the same way!
Finished Nights of Awe and it was just okay for me. Now reading Spilled Blood and this one has grabbed me from the opening chapter.
I've just started reading Workers In The Dawn by George Gissing. The last novel I read before that was Vanity Fair (which was excellent).
Presently reading A Drink Before the War. Woot! What a snark fest! (laughing) Kenzie could give Elvis Cole a run for his money in that department. I, actually, snorted out loud twice already, and snickered at least three times. I'm really liking it!

I just finished THE MONKEY'S MASK, by Dorothy Porter. I loved it, and would recommend it to anyone who likes noir.

I liked "Stay Close" and thought it was a better novel than "Defending Jacob" but some originality regarding the bad guy de jour is always a good idea and always welcome...I'm looking forward to reading "Stolen Prey" soon as well....... ."I read the Eve Duncan series & really enjoyed it, although it was slightly repetitive at times. The end of the series was great though! Also, how are you like the Bones & Jack Reacher series? Both of those are books I'd like to read!
I finished John Gilstrap's No Mercy. I like it. Going to read his next one soon. I'm currently reading
and
Just found suspense novelist Minette Walters - intelligent, characters that are suspenseful in and of themselves. Will read more.
I'm reading Immensely Loud and Extremely Close. The boy's voice is simply wonderful and his pain at the loss of his father in 9/11 comes through in the narrative.

The Reacher series, I just started. I LOVED the first book; "The Killing Floor." It gripped me with the first opening paragraph. This one I'm currently reading hasn't really gripped me yet. My boss loves this series and said there really isn't a bad book in the lot.

"Please tell me how you like this Silva book. As you may recall, I feel this is the best book in the series that I have read so far. (I'm only on book 6 in the series.)
I am reading my first John Sanford mystery. Buried Prey. It is a long book but I'm enjoying it. I do prefer pychological mysteries like Ruth Rendel and Frances Fyfield. Can anyone suggest a good book?
Just finished
and really hope this becomes a series. An almost leisurely pace and a very unique main character. Sneaky. I was about halfway through the book and suddenly realized I did not want to put it down.
Marilyn wrote: "I am reading my first John Sanford mystery. Buried Prey. It is a long book but I'm enjoying it. I do prefer pychological mysteries like Ruth Rendel and Frances Fyfield. I'm caught in the Robert B. Parker "Spenser Series" and I can't get out! I take them from the library 7 at a time, reserving the next 7 at the same time. They remind me of MacDonald's Travis McGee. Delightful and heartwarming. SO glad Parker's "Jesse Stone" series waits in the wings.
I've just finished this humorous mystery by Barb Silkstone. The Secret Diary of Alice in Wonderland, Age 42 and Three-Quarters
July wrote: "I'm caught in the Robert B. Parker "Spenser Series" and I can't get out! I take them from the library 7 at a time, reserving the next 7 at the same time. I envy you being able to read the Spenser series for the first time!
Wow you all are giving so many "to read ideas"I just finished After the Fog
Fifty Shades of GreyFifty Shades DarkerFifty Shades Freed A group of my friends who never reads with me begged me to read with them so I joined the masses. Not that impressed personally. Especially the 3rd book . I loved After The Fog however. I felt it had everything.
I really liked After the Fog. I am now reading The Year of the Gadfly and Heading Out to Wonderful for review.
Has anyone read Jo Nesbo's Phantom? I was really looking forward to it, having enjoyed both The Snowman and The Leopard. This book left me disappointed however, but judging by the reviews, I'm in a minority!
I just started Angel Sleuth and I'm laughing out loud. This has got to be Lesley Diehl's best book yet. Not finished, but I doubt I'll be disappointed.

The 700 pages aren't really 700 pages :) Many are footnotes/letters/photos that provide background notes to the "story". I'm really enjoying it, though had to take a break with a smaller book yesterday since I didn't want to lug this heavy one to the beach with me.
