Just finished reading
. It was a good murder mystery with absolutely no romance, if you are into that kind of a book.

I'm so sorry, I could not finish
. Maybe I am too old and the book is not for me. I appreciate that I received it free from GR but I could not waste anymore of my timewhen there are so many good books out there.
This book is about friends who have gone to Oxford together, moved to NYC, live "camping out in a studio a friend was house-sitting" then Sylvie moves in with Laurie and want only "to get wasted at parties" & kissing everyone they can whether male or female, stealing each other's supposed boyfriends or
girlfriends, kissing but making sure it only counts
if using the "tongue", having bets, and Laurie who has cancer says "all I want is a little nookie"
They get irritated with each other. Sylvie moves out. I also move out and close the book for good on page 50.
Maybe Reents is striving for satire of friendship, NYC life, etc. as the story is exaggerated and ridiculous.
I jumped off the Hillerman bus yesterday long enough to listen to Tricked from the "Iron Druid" series by Kevin Hearne. I really enjoyed it, but that really isn't a surprise. I've enjoyed all of the books from this series thus far. If you like "The Dresden Files", you'll probably like these books as well. I'm back on the bus, though, this morning and have started Coyote Waits.
Just started Dust & Decay, and drawn in as I was with 1st in series Rot & Ruin. A new genre for me! Zombies and YA
Now reading
The third in this series and I'm enjoying this as much as I did the first two. Very intriguing series.
I am currently reading Expert Witness by Rebecca Forster It is the fourth book in the Witness Series that she has written. It is a phenominal series!
Caroline wrote: "I am currently reading Expert Witness by Rebecca Forster It is the fourth book in the Witness Series that she has written. It is a phenominal series!"I have all of these on my TBR list!! So glad to hear you like the series!

:) They definitely twist and turn. Jodie is witful and loyal and the relationship between Jodie and Hannah is very, very interesting. Archer makes me laugh
And now back to the Swedish authors. I have just started
by Hakan Nesser. Let's see where this goes. Starting slow, fill-in, background, protaganist=Van Veeteren, missing girl.
Georgia wrote: "And now back to the Swedish authors. I have just started

Right now I am reading The Snowman, and it is creeping me out! I do not like scary books, but love a good grisly thriller. This is definitely keeping me up late at night!
Just finished COLD WATER BURNING by John Straley, the second of his I've read. Very impressive.Currently reading Stewart O'Nan's SONGS FOR THE MISSING, which is not technically a mystery but is surprisingly suspenseful. And, of course, extremely well written.

I just brought this one home from the library, let me know if you like it.

They're Back?? YAY!!
Just finished Expert Witness A little disapointed figured out the bad guy too early :(
Just finished
and ended up not rating it. The plot and characters were interesting and the book very readable. If you like the combination of cop/werewolf it's as good as anything in this line I've read. The book ends with an absolute cliffhanger, which I hate with a passion. Strictly personal, but will not be reading any more in what is obviously going to be a series.
T wrote: "Well, the storyline is on DD, but the Quincys do consult briefly at least!"Oh... well either series works for me lol.
Just recently finished Alan Furst's The Foreign Correspondent. It's a historical spy thriller set in 1939 just before all hell breaks loose in Europe. My review can be found here.
I've read so many really good, reasonably priced Indie authors this year, that I've decided to review ONLY reasonably priced ($.99-$2.99)Indie mystery/suspense on Kindle/Amazon. Here's another winner for only $.99 Deadly Pleasures
While Megan Riley struggles to keep her real estate career afloat in a down economy, her rich and beautiful women friends live life to the hilt. But as Megan watches her friends lives unravel with philandering husbands and financial problems of their own, she realizes that her lonely life may not be so bad after all.
Enter Matt Donovan, LAPD homicide detective, and his investigation into the brutal and sadistic murders of young hookers. Though there's an instant attraction between Matt and Megan, I liked the slow and sexy way the author took to bring these two people together. I also liked that Megan, though lonely, doesn't fall into the trap that her desperate-for-love women friends do when they consider hiring a "boy-toy."
The police procedural for this suspense novel is top-notch with Matt and his team of two other investigators. That they all have to work through all the sordid underground S&M clubs of LA to uncover an insane serial killer was really interesting and very well done. I was also fascinated by the juxtaposition between the wealthy yacht club crowd and what appears to be a completely unrelated world… that of an S&M serial killer of young prostitutes. That these two incredibly divergent worlds should be connected is what makes this book a winner for me.
Though the subject of the story seems lurid and frightening, the author paces every scene so that the suspense is ramped up and up until the last exciting scenes where the serial killer is brought to justice and lovers find each other.
Highly recommended read!

Ursula, I have never forgotten the Picture of DorianGrey, the movie. I saw it when I was 6 or 8, and it still comes back to me. It is the perfect picture of good and evil
I'm currently on a Ruth Rendell bender. I hadn't read her before just a month or so ago, and now I can't (and don't want to) stop!
Finished Abandoned by Cody McFadyen.
Back into his stride with this one. Thoroughly evil bad guy and brave detectives after the killer... I was disappointed with his third book and this book is back on his high-bar track. Not sure what to read next... any recommendations of a really excellent book?

Will do, Hugh. If I find an author I like, I generally read all of his/her books in order, but I know Rendell has some stand-alone books. Thanks for the recommendation--it looks good!
Bill wrote: "I read Furst's Spies of the Balkans and thought it was great. I have to find more of his books. "Furst is definitely a wonderful novelist. I don't think I enjoyed The Foreign Correspondent as much as a lot of people, mostly because the plot moved so slowly. But I'm open to reading more from Furst. If Spies of the Balkans was good, maybe I should read that one.

I have listened to a couple of Stewart O'Nan's books this year - I really like him, I will see if my library has this one on audio.
Just finished
and currently reading
and
- HG was awesome, obviously lol and I am really enjoying the two books I'm reading. One is non-fiction, the other fiction.
Right now I am taking a break from my Swedish crime books and reading the YA book Sloppy Firsts. My sister Loves this series, and I have owned it forever. I am finally getting around to reading it.
I'm reading Dance of Death by Douglas Preston. I'm liking it okay but it drags on with too many long "running from danger" scenes. This seems more like padding than story telling.
Reading The Homeless Killer This is more mystery/police procedural than the previous books in the series.
This is kind of a stupid question, but I'm going to ask anyway. Is there a place on this website that gives a list of acronyms used and their definitions? Just wondering....
Not usually one for true crime stories but just finished Capote's In Cold Blood. As a journalist, I'd been meaning to read it for years since it's always referred to as the classic example of the non-fiction novel. Though parts of it were slow, it definitely showed you the "true" side of crime drawing some real sympathy for the murder victims. As a side note, I was reporting on a boxing/martial arts event recently, being granted access to one of the gyms that had several fighters competing. I brought In Cold Blood with me to read when things got slow. But when one of the fighters showed up, I was sitting there reading it and realized this particular fighter was on parole for murder. I doubt he was familiar with the oeuvre of Capote's work but didn't want to take the chance on offending him and hid the book under my jacket.

Just finished
Very good addition to the series. Will be starting The Thief of Time by Hillerman, a re-read for this group.
I just finished The Fifth Servant set in the Jewish quarter of 16th century Prague. Great details about the place and Jewish custom, but I was a little disappointed with how overwhelmed the story got at times by the information he had researched. An interesting book in any case. Here's my review.
I've started Fun House: A John Ceepak Mystery by Chris Grabenstein. This is a light, fun mystery series set in a fictional summer resort town called Sea Haven.
I am now finishing
. I feel that Vince Flynn has slipped a little in this one (like Tay said about David Baldacci, difference is that
Baldacci doesn't have the same character in each book so we get a "freshness" there. However, with this book, it seems to be bomb plots again, a formidable Mitch somewhat even more brutal. It is an interesting book but not as great as some of his others. I really loved
I am reading my second book by Linwood Barclay called Bad Move. Little slow at the outset, but it's beginning to pick up now.
Mike wrote: "I am reading my second book by Linwood Barclay called Bad Move. Little slow at the outset, but it's beginning to pick up now."I enjoyed that series but have to admit his standalones have been much more successful.
Just finished The Affair by Lee Child. Now going back to James Lee Burke. Sunset Limited then Purple Cane Road.
