I'm feeling so uninspired about the new line-up. I don't understand why, when DWTS is climbing the ratings charts, they can't get better "stars" :-( Have we really come down to the point where one is a "star" simply by being the brother of Kim Kardashian or the ex-girlfriend of George Clooney? I'm hoping that some of my pro dancing favorites, like Maks and Derek, will be back... otherwise, I probably won't muster the enthusiasm to watch.
I didn't realize the new line-up had been announced! I must go and take a look. Maybe these new non-stars will charm us with their incredible personalities and dance ability???
Well, it's certainly an interesting cast if not full of A-listers. I like David Arquette and Carson Kressley should provide some good entertainment. I'm not sure what to say about Nancy Grace except EEEEEK! Ricki Lake is kind of a cutie. I don't know a few of the other contestants at all. It is a little surprising that more actual stars are not participating. It seems to be a really popular show.
Lee wrote: "I didn't realize the new line-up had been announced! I must go and take a look. Maybe these new non-stars will charm us with their incredible personalities and dance ability???"That's my hope. I have been pleasantly surprised a few times in the past.
I agree, Carson Kressley should be quite entertaining. I hope he makes it to the week where they get to design their own costumes ;-)
Kathryn and Lee, I so agree. I can't understand why the show's popularity doesn't garner it some real stars. I'm not enthusiastic at all about this season. Like you, Kathryn, if Maks and Derek aren't back, I'm not sure it will be worth my time.
Lee wrote: "Oh yes, Maks has to be there."Especially after last season, he was so adorable with Kirstie! Though, it will be hard to find that magic again no matter who he is paired with this time.
Yeah, this is not the most inspired cast list I've ever seen. But no "obvious winner" that I can think of, either. (Which was my reaction a few years ago when Donny Osmond was cast.)
I agree with those of you who say it is an unexciting cast. But I thought the same thing last season, except for Ralph Maccio and Kirstie Alley, but then I voted most often for Chelsea, who was an unknown to me.
I haven't watched the results show yet from last night but I thought the first night of dancing was quite interesting.
I loved Carson's enthusiasm! Any early favourites yet from you folks who watch?

Carson was my favorite, too! I loved his zest for life; it just shone in his dancing. I wish everyone could embrace dance like that, no inhibitions! ;-)I also thought that David Arquette, Chyna (Tony's partner), Hope Solo, Rikki Lake, the Vet, maybe a few others, showed promise. I think George Clooney's ex (sorry, I don't remember her name and frankly that is all they are hyping her as--sad!) should go next.
Yes, the Italian girl is not my fave either. She is beautiful but that's about it. I loved how quirky David Arquette was! And the vet was great, he shows real promise.
Even though I wasn't that excited about the participants at first, I am already liking some of them. I, like others have stated, remember other seasons I thought would be duds and ended up liking it. I think Chynna Phillips and Hope Solo look very promising in the ladies, and I like David Arquette and J.R. Martinez in the men. Carson and Rikki are two I like personality-wise, but not yet for their dancing abilities. I, too, felt bad for George Clooney's ex and feel she will go soon. I was pleasantly surprised by Chaz, seemed to hold his own.
Wow, did you guys watch last night? The last number was so fantastic and I think the judges were so harsh with their scoring. I was MAD!
Lee wrote: "Wow, did you guys watch last night? The last number was so fantastic and I think the judges were so harsh with their scoring. I was MAD!"Me, too! It always bugs me SOOO much when they dock points from the dancer for a mistake the pro makes in the choreography. How was that J.R. (?) guy supposed to know that it was lindy hop and not jive!?!?! He's just learning!!! And he danced it GREAT!!! It was fabulous!!! The show has a real problem when the poor dancers are penalized like that when they did the best job they could. He was better than everyone else and those scores made me angry, too! Gurrrr!
Other than JR, I thought the night was pretty much a disaster. I don't think they should give the contestants jive and quick-step so early in the competition. The dances are too fast and difficult for new dancers to learn; just the choreography and speed alone are daunting. I think it really showed when even front-runners from last week couldn't keep up. I guess Chyna and Ricki were still decent, but otherwise I don't think anyone quite measured up. I felt bad for Carson; I didn't think he was that much different than many of the others last night and yet they picked on his lack of dance ability. Anyway, I am just glad that he seemed to take it well (though I could see he was a bit hurt/disappointed) and hope he will be back next week. Anna was so cute taking off her shoe and threatening the judges, haha! ;-) And I loved their outfits; her dress was soooo cute and pretty! Anyway, as a dancer myself, I know that some people just are not "natural dancers" and I've seen it in class how some people just work their butts off but they will never be as good as someone with "natural talent" who just phones it in so my heart really went out to Carson. Of course, it is a dancing competition and at some point the best dancers are the only ones who should be there, but right now few are really shining and I hope people will see how hard Carson works and give him a few more weeks to improve under Anna's teaching.
I know! I adore Carson and how he puts so much effort into learning the dance and he really ENTERTAINS! He is so fun to watch.
And the judges should definitely not penalize the contestants for the choreography. That's just ridiculous! Poor J.R.

I missed the first part of DWTS last night, but I did see J.R. and Chynna, and I thought J.R. was fantastic. Chynna was pretty good, too. I get really aggravated with the judges, too, especially for the choreography penalties. Also, I think that every season they are inconsistent about their criticisms, some contestants who are really good and can't seem to get a break and others not so good and the judges fawning after.
Yes, it seems like they really have their favourites and those that are not in that group can't get a break no matter how much effort they put in.
Kathy wrote: "Also, I think that every season they are inconsistent about their criticisms, some contestants who are really good and can't seem to get a break and others not so good and the judges fawning after."Yeah, it's so rigged. Popularity, ratings and all that. Sad :-( I wish they would just offer their "expertise" (ahem) and let the people vote for who they want, like on "American Idol". I think the judges scores are really shams.
Well, I think most everyone was surprised at the way the elimination went last night. Sadly, it wasn't based on talent or lack of. Mark and Kristin weren't my favorites, but they could certainly dance well. Of course, every season there are eliminations that have nothing to do with talent. As you said, Kathryn, popularity is a big factor.
Kathy wrote: "Well, I think most everyone was surprised at the way the elimination went last night. Sadly, it wasn't based on talent or lack of. Mark and Kristin weren't my favorites, but they could certainly ..."Yes, I was disappointed, too. They weren't my favorites, but I think that Kristin suffered from not having a "big story" behind her, she is likable enough but not really that different/special, and she dances well enough but not the best. So, I think she just kind of got lost in the mix. I thought (for the second week in a row) that it should have been Chaz going home, with Nancy next. Oh well, at least my favorites are still in it! I thought JR did another beautiful and very touching performance, and Carson's was great fun and he seems to be improving in technique. Ricki and Chynna were also strong again.
I agree, Kathryn, that Kristin just didn't stand out enough in the personal connection. It really should have been Chaz going home, but I do like him personally. JR, Ricki, and Chynna are my favorites, too.
I am so in love with Carson and JR too! Gosh, I was bawling my eyes out watching the back stories the other night. They were all great. I kind of have a soft spot for David Arquette as well. He's so goofy and vulnerable at the same time. I think he shares that same quality with Carson.
Yeah, Lee, I have a soft spot for David Arquette, too. So hoping he has gotten his life back together now.

I still love watching Carson, though I think his time is coming soon since his dance skill isn't really improving. But, he's just adorable and a joy to watch. The heart of the show, as Anna said!JR continues to impress. Ricki wasn't so good last night but I think it'll still be her or JR (and her Psycho last week was amazing!)
I thought David showed increasing potential; I really liked his tango last night :-)
Chaz finally seemed to be enjoying himself, but it's too little, too late for me.
Nancy Grace... hum, not much to say there. I do like Tristan, though. He is the only thing that makes their rehearsal footage worth watching ;-) I don't know how he puts up with her, so politely and with such humor, too!
I kind of wish Hope would go home. She really gets on my nerves and she isn't improving. Maks looks rather miserable, and it's all the more painful to watch after last season with him and Kirstie.
Anyone else still watching? :-)
NOOO!!!! I am so disappointed Carson went home :-( Boo hoo! Not that he was the best dancer, but neither are Chaz, Nancy or Hope and none of them had Carson's great attitude in rehearsal or warmth and kindness backstage--I would rather watch Carson any day! I may not watch the full episodes anymore and just look online for JR and Ricki's, and maybe David's, pieces, since the contestants I don't like now outnumber those I do like :-(
Kathryn, I didn't get to watch Monday night, but I did watch last night. I would rather Nancy, Hope, or Chaz (in that order) have gone home than Carson, too. I agree that it's rather uncomfortable watching Hope and Maks together, a definite lack of chemistry there, and like you say, in light of Kirstie and his, it's almost painful to see. Nancy Grace has gotten on my nerves, too, with her stubborn attitude. Again, like you, I think Tristan is great the way he puts up with her. It's good to see Chaz enjoying the dancing now, and I think it's been a good show for him, but he isn't likely to really improve much more. JR and Ricki are my favorites, with David coming in third. So, we seem to be on the same page with the show.
Thanks, Kathy! Glad to know I am not alone ;-) It's hard sometimes, especially with the crazy judging scores, to know where other people rank the contestants. Unless someone else really has a breakthrough, I'm hoping for a Ricki/JR finale, with David in the semi-finals for sure ;-)
Oh, my! Maks really got riled up last night, didn't he? I can't say that I blame him with the judges flip-flopping on judging on skill and personality.
Kathy wrote: "Oh, my! Maks really got riled up last night, didn't he? I can't say that I blame him with the judges flip-flopping on judging on skill and personality."I agree. It's frustrating when they assume someone should dance because they are athletic in one area (Hope vs. poor Chaz who, well, is not!) and expect more from the athlete. Just because one is talented in a sport does not make him/her a good dancer, and even within the dance disciplines all dancers cannot do all styles. It is so painful to watch Hope dance, and in her rehearsal footage with Maks.
I didn't see all the dances last night but I was glad Carson came back however briefly ;-) JR won the night, IMO. But I think Tristan is a great teacher (and good sport with that bear Nancy!) and his choreography was my favorite of the night.
It is painful to watch Maks and Hope, isn't it? They really have no chemistry at all, even seems like Maks doesn't like her much. I feel sorry for her. Can you imagine Maks not liking you? Chaz, well, his time should be up, but we'll see. I enjoyed Carson, too, last night. And, yes, Tristan is a saint, as well as a great teacher. I think you pegged it right calling her a bear. I'm still torn between Ricki and J.R. I love both of their dancing, and Derek and Karina are such great choreographers. J.R. does pull at my heartstrings, such an amazing young man! I am still enjoying David Arquette, too.
Kathy wrote: "It is painful to watch Maks and Hope, isn't it? They really have no chemistry at all, even seems like Maks doesn't like her much. I feel sorry for her. Can you imagine Maks not liking you?"Oh, that would be awful!!! I even heard somewhere that he especially wanted to be paired with Hope. Poor guy, how disappointing!
That WAS really tough to watch last night. Poor Hope. She's all athlete and that's great, she's a wonderful girl.
I missed last week when Carson got emlimated. I just love him so much! I'm happy they brought him back this week to participate. What a doll. Did you see him hugging Maks? That was so funny.

Yes! He would be awesome in Dance Centre. They should have him host intstead of the Burke. She doesn't have half the personality that Carson does. I'm sorry Brooke, you're sweet but Carson is so funny and entertaining!
Lee wrote: "Yes! He would be awesome in Dance Centre. They should have him host intstead of the Burke. She doesn't have half the personality that Carson does. I'm sorry Brooke, you're sweet but Carson is s..."I agree. She just doesn't seem to handle spontaneity very well or relate easily to the contestants under the time pressure. Carson is so off-the-cuff and just darling and everyone seemed to love him on the show.
The Halloween "Boo" episode turned into a "boo hoo" for me when David got booted. What is going on with the voters? He was so much fun, even if he wasn't the best dancer at least I enjoyed watching him. I don't know why people want to keep Hope around when her attitude is so poor (I couldn't believe her praising and flirting with her substitute teacher and saying how much better she learned; it was such a snub to Maks, and even if it was true it seemed unprofessional of her to say it on TV) and Maks was so pouty, it was painful to watch. But, part of that was the judges--I can't believe they scored her higher than JR (taking in the group dance score). And while I still enjoy Tristan, Nancy has got to go, to. Why are they building up Rob in the finale? Strange... oh well, as long as JR or Ricki wins, I guess justice will be served in the end!
I missed the show - sorry to hear David got the boot, I liked him. I was thinking Nancy or Hope would go next.
Nancy should have been the one to go this week. Rob seems to be getting a lot more support than I thought he would. He has improved, but I'm still not much of a fan of his, the whole Kardashian thing is a negative for me.
Yeah, too much media coverage of the Kardashians. On the other hand, it's not fair to blame Rob for Kim's mistakes. I didn't see him dance so I can't say if he's improving. I'm sure it'll come down to Ricki and J.R. as the final 2.
Joy wrote: "Yeah, too much media coverage of the Kardashians. On the other hand, it's not fair to blame Rob for Kim's mistakes. I didn't see him dance so I can't say if he's improving. I'm sure it'll come do..."I meant the whole Kardashian media machine, not just Kim. Actually, Rob has proven to be a lot more likeable than I thought he'd be. I think he's always taken a back seat to his sisters' celebrity, so DWTS seems to have been good for him personally. I agree that it will probably come down to Ricki and J.R., at least I hope it does.
I missed the results show and am sad to hear David got the boot. I'm surprised Hope is still there too.
Lee wrote: "I missed the results show and am sad to hear David got the boot. I'm surprised Hope is still there too."Yeah, I alternate between feeling sorry for Hope and just wishing she go on and get voted off.
Well, I will definitely miss the adorable and witty Tristan, but I think it's fair that Nancy went home. I am still amazed that the judges pulled it off and got Rob and Hope into the semi-finals (I think the judges have pampered them all season) but, really, it should be a Ricki and JR finale and, as long as one of them wins, I'll be happy.
Hi Rosie, welcome to the group!
As usual I didn't watch the results show but I too think it's fair Nancy went home. I don't know what to say about Rob and Hope because I don't want to be negative but it's really astonishing that they're still there considering some of the contestants that have gone home.
