Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Little Elvises is a comedy of criminal manners wrapped in the skin of a dark-side detective story. If you're looking for wry rather than wacky or mild grit rather than lip gloss, this may be the ticket for you. Don't take any of it too seriously -- the characters don't -- and you may have some quick, kicky fun. Four stars.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments The Killing Kind is the literary analog to stock footage. That said, the author cut the clips together really well, producing a killer-killing-killers story that's highly familiar but still entertaining for the time it takes to read it. Empty calories? Sure, but they go down easy. Two and a half stars rounded up to three.

The Valley Of Fear by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Was just to -Let's go to America- for my taste, much like A Study In Scarlet . I suppose I just prefer my Holmes in the fog shrouded London streets heavily misted Moors or in a carriage down the lane

The Great Ruby Robbery by Grant Allen: The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes
This was fun. Didn't figure who did it till the end

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Ghost: My Thirty Years as an FBI Undercover Agent is a fast-reading memoir featuring a largely no-nonsense cop who has an interesting tale to tell and some scores to settle along the way. The author, for all his tough-guy growling, is good company for just over 300 pages. That it’s a familiar story in its outlines doesn’t make it any less entertaining; you’ll get enough inside-cop and inside-crook stuff to feed your true-crime jones and then some. Four stars.

Because I wrote this review for Criminal Element, I can't show it all here. Go here to read the full review and a lot of other good stuff, too.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments The Fallen Architect is an atmospheric novel featuring an intriguing mystery, a sympathetic lead (who can also draw and paint), and a (literally) theatrical supporting cast, all set effectively in a colorful milieu. If this sounds good to you, read it now before it makes the easy leap to Masterpiece Mystery or an Alienist-like prestige production on TNT or Netflix. Four drafting pencils.

Because I wrote this review for Criminal Element, I can't show it all here. Go here to read the full review and a lot of other good stuff, too.

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 421 comments Illicit: How Smugglers, Traffickers and Counterfeiters Are Hijacking the Global Economy is, despite its various shortcomings, a good entry-level view of counterfeiting, smuggling, money laundering and tax evasion. If you've been paying attention to the subject, you'll still learn something; if you haven't, you'll probably be shocked and appalled. In any event, you'll be more likely to see beyond the too-good-to-be-true bargain. Three $25 "Seiko" watches.

This is a superb first novel by the great Agatha. Poirot is already fully formed with all his appealing quirks, and Agatha's use of 'what she knows' her knowledge about poisons gained from her work in a pharmacy is awesome. Note the ending. Agatha first had Poirot give the denouement in an open court but this was changed on her publisher's advice. Here for the first time Poirot gathers the suspects together to unveil the solution of the puzzle to them. The first of many times.

LGandT | 15 comments Its been a while since I have done a review so here are two. :)

The Coven Murders {Inspector Sheehan Mysteries 3}
Brian O'Hare

This one got me right from the beginning. A rather gruesome {well to me anyway} murder. Kept my interest even though it was a tad much for me, I seem to like my crime a bit more lighthearted

Murder On The Orient Express
Agatha Christie

I won't lie about this, if it had not been narrated by that particular person I doubt I would have enjoyed it at all. As it is though I really enjoyed it.
