I myself am just starting on the classics. I'm currently reading Great Expectations, and really enjoying it.

Which ones have you read, or are you just starting as well?

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 9 comments I have only read a modern classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. Oh, I also read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Cool, I'm looking forward to reading those. I have read one modern classic as well, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 9 comments I didn't realize that was a modern classic. I have read The Bell Jar also.

Well, I should be finishing up Great Expectations withing the next week or so, so I'll probably move on to Anna Karenina or Pride and Prejudice, though I'm not sure. There are several that I really want to read.

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 9 comments There are a lot of them I want to read as well.

message 11: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2 comments I read quite a few in high school, but I would probably need to re-read quite a few :)

VWrulesChick I have a Classics shelf, under my books, so I would recommend if you would like to know, just click on it and it is will show you what I have read and not read.

Mainly a handful of Shakespeare, but not too many. But I am hopeful to get into them and read a good bunch of them in the next year.

Cool, I'll have to check it out.

I'm hoping for the same thing. :)

message 15: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (Snoopi) Hello everybody, I just joined the group and I'm hoping I can keep up. The classics are usually door-stoppers! But I love them. I've read a spattering of Dickens, Austen, Thackery, Richardson, Flaubert... You know, the ones you have to read for the English lit courses... I really love Dickens and have a goal of reading all of his books to my kids (but they're not old enough yet). Okay, so here's the bomb... I've wanted to read Middlemarch for the longest time! Any takers??

message 16: by VWrulesChick (new)

VWrulesChick Hey Rachel & welcome!

Sounds like you are the rest of us, wanting to read more of the classic genre. May I suggest that you add Middlemarch to the Suggestion Topic made by Alyssa?

Have fun reading!

:)

Welcome to the group Rachel!
I can promise you that we will be reading plenty of Dickens here. And I'll put Middlemarch onto the voting list for April!

Thanks for joining!

message 18: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (Snoopi) Great to be here. I already have a copy of Anna Karenina so I'll see how far I can get. I haven't read it before. :) Thanks for adding Middlemarch to the voting list.

Well, I can put those books on the voting list too, maybe we'll read one next month! :)
Go for it! I myself will be starting it hopefully in a day or two.

message 21: by Carmen (new)

Carmen (carmenxrae) I'm new to this group!

I've only recently discovered the greatness of classics, thanks to my AP English teacher, so I have a lot of reading ahead of me. Fine by me!

I'm currently reading Jane Austen novels, just finished Pride and Prejudice, now I'm starting Persuasion.

Jane Eyre was fantastic!
My favorite classic so far was The Picture of Dorian Gray. Very intense.

message 22: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 29, 2010 05:49PM) (new)

I've read: Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, The Phantom of the Opera, The Count of Monte Crisco, The Lord of the Flies, Dracula, Little Women, The Yearling, Anne Frank, Anne of Green Gables, and I'm pretty sure theres more.

Or most of the rest of us, that is. Awesome!
What have been your favorites so far?

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm....I loved Jane Austen's works. OH, and Phantom of the Opera and Dracula! Lord of the Flies was really good, Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern grows made me cry. Little Women was great too!

message 26: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (Snoopi) Hi Carmie,
Be sure to check out the Challenges... looks like you might have a great start!

message 27: by Amber (new)

Amber | 2 comments I've been reading the classics in school and on my own for awhile. I've read a lot of Dickens: Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities. I've read Wuthering Heights, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Old Man and the Sea, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings series, On the Road, Catcher in the Rye, Grapes of Wrath, Frankenstein, Beowulf, Romeo and Juliet, The Picture of Dorian Grey... Oh my gosh, I've read a lot of classics! LOL I can't remember them all.

message 28: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (hawkstar) | 73 comments Mod
Haha, that's great!

message 29: by Katie (new)

Katie | 4 comments I loved To Kill A Mockingbird. The movie with Gregory Peck is one of the best interpretations of a book to a script. I am currently reading Sherlock Holmes Vol. 1 and The Scarlet Pimpernel. I highly recommend these to read and The Count of Monte Cristo.

i couldn't really get into Little women. i felt that aside from its lenght it could very well be a childrens book. it seemed very simplistic to me.

i know right and it was so shocking for me as a lot of peoplehave splendid things to say about the book. i was so scared i was dimwit when i realised how much i wasnt liking the book.

message 36: by Libby (new)

Libby (shostagirl) I LOVE Anna Karenina, but part of that is because I love history so much. I really enjoy Tolstoy for that reason, he always includes so much history. War and Peace took some dedication, but it was such an amazing story. There's a lot of history in it as well.

message 37: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 1 comments Anna Karenina, East of Eden, Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, Silas Mariner, Wuthering Heights (ages ago), 1984, Jane Eyre, Altas Shrugged, The Fountainhead, Moby Dick, Of Mice and Men, Catcher in the Rye, Anthem, Count of Monte Cristo, and more I'll think of later

message 38: by Michelle (last edited Sep 07, 2010 10:53AM) (new)

Michelle (mgauffant) Hi I'm new to the group :)
I just finished Anna Karenina.
I've also read Great Expectations, Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, The Portrait of Dorian Gray and Tale of Two Cities.
My next choice is Moby Dick. I've been wanting to read that for ages.

message 39: by Kayla (new)

Kayla Hi everyone. I just joined.

I love classics and I've read quite a few of them...around 62 (I have a classics shelf on goodreads so I can keep up with how many I've read). My favorites are The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, The Great Gatsby, The Bell Jar, The Fountainhead, The Brothers Karamazov, and Franny and Zooey.

I'm currently reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and I have Persuasion on hold at the library.

Joy (Cheery♡Reads) (cheerybell) | 1 comments I'm a Classic Lover. I have a whole shelf shelfed with classics. I've read so many. Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Little Women, Good Wives, An Old-Fashioned Girl, the whole Emily of New Moon Series & Anne of Green Gables Series, Jane Eyre, Phantom of the Opera and oh! so so many that I can't keep count of.

message 42: by Inez (new)

Inez Quijano (inezquijano) | 2 comments I started reading the classics as a kid. My first was The Secret Garden and Little Women. I've gone on to read Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, etc. My favorite classic would definitely be Jane Austen's Emma. I'm currently reading one of the more recent ones, Catch-22. After this one, I might go for The Godfather or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

It was awful reading the hard copy, I can imagine trying to read it from a computer. I love the classics, but Anna Karenina was different from what I expected. They try to make it seem like it's a book that empowers women because Anna is strong-willed and independent, but really, she's just a (warning: potential spoiler ahead) cheater and a weakling. IMO.

message 44: by Connor (new)

Connor Kinkade (connork) There are a few I've read. The best are the Lord of the Rings, A Tale of Two Cities, and The Three Musketeers. I also read A Christmas Carol, Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island and more that I just can't think of off the top of my head. I am currently reading the Count of Monte Cristo and I will read Hamlet next (which I guess is this months book as well as A Tale of Two Cities).

message 45: by MjerrieT (new)
