I love John Burdett's books located in Thailand. They are good mysteries and also explain a lot about Bhuddism"

I used to live in Thailand in I would say he brings Bangkok alive with words. His discriptions make me miss that big smelly city. Ahh...

KSMary I started Stardust

message 259: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) I changed my mind and went with The Virgin Blue. I'm not sure why, but I'm avoiding Life of Pi. Perhaps I'm still resentful, as the librarian who dissed my other selection (The Historian) endorsed Life of Pi so heartily. I think I may be contrary.

message 260: by KSMary (new)

KSMary I have The Historian waiting TBR as soon as I finish Stardust.

I'm really surprised that a librarian would be able to dismiss a book so easily. One should realize that everyone has different tastes. That is why there are so many different types.

I am interested to hear what you think - it was such a heavily researched book, I learned so much while I read it. I probably wouldn't re-read it, but it was totally worth picking up.

Sincerely,

I've read Fallen Angels and Girl with a Pearl Earring. I enjoyed them both. Her style of writing is different in a way that I can not pin point.

message 269: by Karli (new)

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) I finished Virgin Blue last night. I think it's a better book than The Girl with the Pearl Earring. I finished the last half of the book last night, just didn't want to put it down without finishing it.

I think I'll be starting The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov tonight.

message 270: by [deleted user] (new)

I started reading The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks by Nicholas Sparks.

It is my first book by Sparks, I'm reading this one while I wait for The last Song.

The book is simple and easy to read. However, I love the movie so much that I was shaking my head at some spots. What a difference. I have to admit I think that I like the movie better then the book. A rarity.

message 271: by Jencey/ (new)

Jencey/ (jencey) One of the few times I would say that I liked the movie better than the book. I loved A Walk To Remember the book better than the movie. Ah of course I digress kinda leads towards another topic. See audiobooks.

message 273: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne (a-town) | 42 comments I have just read Siddhartha and am looking for a new book to devour. I have thought heavily about reading Lolita but I'm not sure if I can take the subject matter. I know it's suppose to cantain amazing writing and a good story, but I just don't know if I'll be able to enjoy it. I have always gone by Oscar WIlde's "There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all." saying, but I really don't know if I can handle Lolita. If anyone of you has read it, please advise

message 274: by Angela (new)

Angela B I started The Last Song last night. I am about 50 pages in and I am really enjoying it already

Karli (goodreadscomkarli_is_booked) I started The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent on Friday. I'm getting a little scattered in my reading. :) I'm on chapter five in The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov as well...not sure how these two will blend, but was needing something a little easier to follow than The Master and Margarita. That one is translated from Russian, and was originally written in the 1930's, so it's a bit more difficult to just consume as I can more contemporary lit.

at work, some coworkers saw that i was reading anthony kiedis' book scar tissue. one person commented that i should read marilyn manson's autobiography as it was just as compelling, it not more so. after the conversation, a friend (coworker) bought it and read it over spring break and then readily passed it along. it is shocking.

message 284: by Angela (new)

Angela B I didn't know Marilyn Manson had an autobiography

anyways I just started Twisted by Andrea Kane about 40 pages in and I'm already enjoying it

Nod's Limbs (Edgar and Ellen) by Charles Ogden by Charles Ogden. This one I'm reading to by boys.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #4) by Jeff Kinney by Jeff Kinney. I bought this one because my son has been asking for awhile. He is reading it and I grab it when he is at school so I can see what the hype is all about.

Angelology by Danielle Trussoni by Danielle Trussoni. This book was not good and now I'm really enjoying it. Hopefully, it will stay good.

Hi Elyssa, thats what I thought at first. It was really slow in the beginning like almost through the first 1/2 of the book and then WHAM, it got very interesting and I can't believe the author left the opening hanging so there could be a second book. I hope the second book is better.

message 289: by [deleted user] (new)

Although, I'm really enjoying it at the momment I wonder why she left the mystery out of the mystery. I mean as soon as they said we need to figure this out the next step they figured it out. There was no dead end in their search. At least so far.

Ronda Tutt (rondatutt) Wait for it Elyssa, if you hadn't figured it out yet - I'll give you a clue - Remember the affair and what do you think the results were from having an affair with an Angel? Oh yeah and where is the horn hidden? I bet you already know - LOL Still the ending will get to you because you will want to know what happens to a certain person. LOL

I just hit the affair part last night. It is so out in the open but I'm still enjoying this book. I just checked some of the reviews on Goodreads because I'm curious as to what others are saying. I can't believe that there are so many bad reviews. I also had no idea that people are trying to compare this to Dan Browns writing. Come on people, the writers are two different people, of course, they write differently. That comparison stuff kills me, if they wrote the same it would almost be just a copy cat and what fun is that?

message 293: by Ronda (new)

Ronda Tutt (rondatutt) Hi Elyssa, I think the reason they compare this book to Dan Browns books is because of how they take a religious portion from the bible and add some myth to it. For instance, in Gen 6 in the KJ version of the bible, it refers to the sons of God - suposedly these are the fallen angels this book is talking about. Did you read my review? I talked about this in my review. I didn't really tell about the story about the book, I more less just talked about the myth part in the book. I enjoyed it and gave it a 3 star. I bet the second book will be better.

Jencey/ (jencey) I am reading The Bourne Identity (Jason Bourne, #1) by Robert Ludlum . My dad gave me this book.

message 298: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm 80 pages in so far. Just got to the second section last night. I'm ready to say how I feel about this one yet.

(Oh, I just looked and wow there really is a lot of mixed reviews for this one.)

I should also remind everyone I usually go into a book knowing nothing about it. I liked to be surprised or not have the weight of a expectation on me.

@ Jencey Bourne Identity should be on its way. Soon I'll be placing it on my shelf! Thanks goodreads swap!!

I felt it was worth the read - it was disappointing in some ways because I REALLY loved The Time Traveller's Wife, and this totally was not the same, nor quite as good. But, I still enjoyed the read.

message 300: by [deleted user] (new)

I have yet to read the time travelers wife. It is one of those books that everyone has read but me. I have no writing comparison.
