Patricia (pg4003) | 45 comments Do ebooks count as duplicates? Since getting my first Kindle about 2 years ago, I have not read a paper book and don't want to. I've purchased several ebooks of the same books I already have in hardback. I have all of Stephen King's in hardback and am slowly building my ebook Stephen King library.

I've wanted the british version of Harry Potter but no easy way for me to get them. As close as I got was mp3 files of the first 5 british HP audiobooks read by Stephen Fry.

I have the hardback editions I bought to read, and as my kids preferred them, later a cheaper (trade) paperback set for them to read.

Have you tried putting your duplicates up on paperbackswap or other similiar sites? It's a great way to get rid of books you don't want, duplicates, already read, etc. I use it mostly to find out-of-print books, or to complete gaps in series.

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) I have two copies of Pride and Prejudice, one is the copy I first read (and one of the first books I ever bought for myself) and the other is an edition I had to use for a class, which I keep for the annotations and essays. The only other duplicates I have are two copies of Lolita (one paperback with annotations, the other a very nice Everyman's library hardcover) and two copies of Katharine Kerr's Darkspell, because the later edition has changes to the text, so I wanted to have both versions. I typically don't keep duplicates, unless there are slight differences between the editions or one of them is sentimental while the other is more useful.

Thom Swennes (Yorrick) | 592 comments I have four or five copies of Joseph Heller's Catch 22 because I think it is near the top of my ten favorite books. I also have John Jakes' Bicentennial series (paperback and hard cover) but doubles are the exception with me and not the rule.

I didn't even think about that. If my Kindle editions count as duplicates, than I probably own at least 50 books in duplicate (especially since a lot of my favorite books are classics in public domain).

Hector Peniche | 9 comments I have the same books in English and Spanish sometimes.
When I live in London I read in English. Now I am in Mexico and I find the same book that I already have in English and I buy it in spanish as well anyway....

message 60: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (imsophiedavies) I organised my shelves a while back and discovered, to my surprise, I have multiples of a few books I never knew I had; Stephen King's The Stand (because my old edition has lost its cover) and Misery (these two are pretty much identical in condition, covers and everything else - why do I have two copies?!), Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, several Brothers Grimm books from vintage to modern re-prints and possibly a few more.

message 61: by Summer (new)

Summer (summer-b) | 9 comments I have multiple copies of several books. A few of my books got lost while moving, and I bought them as a replacement before eventually unearthing the original. I also have two copies of Alice in Wonderland with different illustrations/covers. It's my favourite story and I can see myself having an enormous pile of Alice in Wonderlands in my future :)

Sarah Fletcher | 2 comments I'm trying to complete my Agatha Christie collection without buying any duplicates - which is a nightmare!

message 63: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (evilone) | 1 comments I think I only have two titles that I bought twice. One is "The Last Unicorn" I have an old one that's rather frail. So my friend bought me an Anniversary Edition so I could still read when I wanted too. Then Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I got the paperback in a bulk set and the book is so big the spine is already having trouble. So when I found it in hardback for six bucks...I figured replace it before it got to bad off :0)

Sarah, you might want to go here: http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/C_A...

You can print off this list of all of her work and check the titles off as you get them.

sonya marie madden | 411 comments I have two or three of some books because I thought I misplaced them.

message 66: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Me too-those are the kind of duplicates that annoy me. I try to give them away but my taste being what it is, most my friends don't want them. :(
I just realized I could put them on Book Swap! :)

message 68: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I only have duplicates by accident - getting a book that I didn't remember I already had...

message 69: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (rockstarninja) I have 3 versions of The Lord of The Rings, the original paperback of all 3 together from when I was in high school, a hardback of the same, and a set that is the 3 books separately. I also have 2 copies of The Dirt (Motley Crue's Autobiography) my paperback that has all my highlights and notes in it of favorite passages and I also have a hardcover 1st edition that my mom bought me as a gift.

message 70: by [deleted user] (new)

I've "accidentally on purpose" ended up with some duplicates because I have a lot of books in storage from a (not so recent) move. Rather than dig through the storage unit, I just bought the books I wanted to read again. I know for sure I have 2 or 3 copies of Seabiscuit, as well as several duplicates from the Harry Potter series. Possibly a duplicate of The Red Hourglass . . . I have to keep forcing myself not to do this, though -- it's going to be a real mess once I finally pull those boxes out of storage!

message 71: by Becomingme (new)

Becomingme | 15 comments Do having copies in 2 different languages count (it does according to LibraryThing)...for example I have both the spanish and english versions of Like Water for Chocolate and The House of the Spirits...

As to having a print version and e-book version, I can say that for some of my books too...

And I've had other copies ofDavid Eddings because I wore out the first copies I had.

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

One of my orders from Amazon this week had not one, but TWO duplicates of books IN THAT ORDER. I thought surely Amazon had made a mistake, but nope -- I actually ordered extra copies of two books. Just because I hadn't checked the order! Talk about dumb!

message 73: by Robert (last edited May 08, 2011 08:55AM) (new)

Robert Clear (robertclear) | 10 comments I have one or two academic book duplicates, but none for fiction as far as I'm aware. But I can definitely imagine the same thing happening with one of my Amazon orders. I'm a bit lax when it comes to double checking my orders!

message 74: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) I have a huge number of books in my collection, acquired over many years and have fallen into that trap of not remembering what I own and what I read from the library.....so I have duplicates.....even duplicates of duplicates! I loan or give some to friends and family. I have intentional duplicates, such as the Maigret series by Georges Simenon, in English and French (I keep a Larousse handy!!!)

message 75: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (sewtechnicolor) | 55 comments I'll soon have three copies of "Jane Eyre," but it was intentional. My first copy was a cheap paperback. Then I found a lovely hardcover 1940s printing of it at the Goodwill, but it's a little fragile to be read. So I just recently ordered the clothback hardcover Penguin Classics version to be my nice copy (that I can still read). :)

message 76: by Harriet (new)

Harriet (art1write2) | 6 comments I do have duplicates of some of my favorite books. When I had to have eye surgery last year and had trouble reading, I discovered audio books. I was so captivated by the wonderful narrators that I've obtained audios of some I'd read multiple times just to hear them read aloud. It's wonderful and now I enjoy audios almost as frequently as I do my Kindle stuff and my paper books.

message 77: by McKenzie (new)

McKenzie | 45 comments A couple of times I have accidently purchased duplicate copies of some manga volumes. But I have never voluntarily bought more than one copy of a book. Not that I can remember, at least.

message 78: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 63 comments I have 4 copies of A Long Fatal Love Chase by Lousia May Alcott. 1 is a paperback and the other 3 are hardcovers. 1 of the hardcovers is a 1st edition. Now it wasn't printed for the very 1st time until 1995, and I have one of those editions.
And I would gladly get another copy if I ever find one! It is my ultimate favorite book of all time! I encourange EVERYONE to read it! If you can find a copy ;o) Cause I have them all! lol

message 79: by Destiny (new)

Destiny (ladestinytwilliams) | 39 comments I have duplicates of three books. I have two of War and Peace. I have two of Anna Karenina and two of Romeo and Juliet. I also have three copies of Julius Casear for some reason XD

You can send them back with the return slip and be refunded your money. Just once I accidently bought two copies of the same new release (don't know how I managed that, lol) and they had no problem taking one back.

Thanks -- I did send them back with no problem, but I'll be double checking my orders in future!

message 82: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I've done that at least 4 times on my Kindle. Luckily for me, Amazon catches Kindle errors & tells me "You bought a copy of ______ on date"!

message 83: by Carola (new)

Carola (carola-) By accident I have two copies of The Russian Concubine. It was on sale, I bought it, then forgot I had bought it and got another copy when it was on sale again... Oops.

Besides that I have no actual double copies. I have a few seperate works by Shakespeare and a complete works. I'm also a linguaphile so I have some of the same books in different languages (Harry Potter in Dutch, English and Japanese, for example).

If I really end up with double copies I usually give them away. I gave my second copy of The Russian Concubine to my mother.

message 84: by Natacha (new)

Natacha Rosenberg (natachahp) I have 2 of The Maze Runner by James Dashner - I had just finished like a day before, and my dad ruined it by putting a frozen bag of peas on it... it melted, and got my book completely soaked - he felt so bad he bought me a new one :D.

message 85: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) lol, yeah, I have a few duplicates *blushes*

- I have 2 copies of LOTR in paperback (one from...was it 2000? the black-covered ones. The other is one of the early, 1950s editions; found that one during a book sale that my student union was holding). It worked out well because my brother is holding one of the copies.
- I have 3 copies of Austen's Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility (long story concerning the Jane Austen sets that I own. I even had an Italian version of Persuasion at one point last year but I had to leave that behind because of my luggage capacity *sad*)

message 86: by Kate (new)

Kate (fictionalkate) | 7 comments I have 20 copies of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

We studied it in year 12 English and most of the people in my class were going to throw their copies out after the last exams. I couldn't let them do that! So I rescued them.

I'll donate them to the charity bookfair when I remember to do so. I don't really need that many copies of the same edition of the book...

Mary Chambers (marycha) | 49 comments I have a few duplicates. I got my mother's books when she passed away. I have some of my favorites on audiobooks. I have duplicates of some of my childhood books.

message 90: by Bill (new)

Bill I love to collect the versions of the Fantasy and SciFi books I first read as a teen and fell in love with.

There are a few books that I will buy anytime I find a copy. And those are the 1970s, white, Ballentine paperback versions of LOTR and Hobbit, which were the versions that I first read. I currently have 2 Hobbits, 4 Fellowship, 4 Two Towers, and 5 Return of the King. Every time I hold one, I just stare at the cover and bask in the memories of first reading them back in the early 80s.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien The Two Towers (The Lord of the Rings, #2) by J.R.R. Tolkien The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, #3) by J.R.R. Tolkien

I also buy multiple copies of the following, but only if I can find them cheap, such as around a dollar or so. The Brother's Hildebrandt cover LOTR and Hobbit, the first version of the Silmarillion paperback, first paperback versions of Thomas Covenant, the first paperpack versions of the Belgariad and Mallorean, late 70s/early 80s Dune paperbacks. I also buy many copies of any Sword of Truth and Wheel of Time, but don't go too crazy.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) YES!! Sometimes lately when I pick up a used book and go home, I find it already in my collection >:(

message 94: by Ottery (new)

Ottery StCatchpole | 4 comments I do but only because I'd rather be sure I have that book than find out later when I want to read it that I don't own a copy at all. Besides, you can always find someone to give your double copy to, down the road. :D

message 95: by Zouagie (new)

Zouagie | 41 comments I have a couple duplicates of my favorites. The first ones that I own are the library's edition, then I buy the hardcover with the dust jacket.

message 96: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 58 comments there are a few duplicates in my stacks! I do try to not obtain duplicates...but if I find a book in paperback, and then am ale to obtain it in hardback...I very often will do that. that said...now that I am able to mark them as "owned" here on my book list...I am better able to keep track!

some of them are accidental...simply because I forget what I have purchased...and I waltz into the bookshops, and see all the pretty covers!

message 97: by Noor (new)

Noor Talpur (peace4alltheworld) I usually buy duplicates to give away to friends or family as I hate to part with my books

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) No. I do not have duplicates of any books in my collection. If I happen to receive one I already have, I donate one of the copies to my library.

Betsy At one time my sister and I had duplicates because we like the same kind of books, but when we moved in together we donated most of the duplicates to the library.
