Wendy (wldinnis) I just finished #28 Very Valentine by Adriana Trigiani this morning. Very enjoyable.

wow that is a lot to do but you can do it and think of the reward as then having time to read once the work is done

Kellyyyylynne Was doing really well. But I am definitely falling behind. Don't see it getting much better once I start my new job in a couple of weeks but that is the way it goes. I have been trying to listen to more books lately. It is ok, but I can't get past not holding the book in my hand. I guess it just takes time to adapt.

Luce-Virlynn | 45 comments At least during the summer or summer vacation we can all do some more catching up if we want. :)

I'm definitely counting on that! Probably also jump into a few Read-a-thons! (Speaking of which, it would be nice to have a Read-a-thon scheduled right here too)

message 957: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Aths, what kind of Read-a-Thon? Sounds interesting!!

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Kelly wrote: "Aths, what kind of Read-a-Thon? Sounds interesting!!"

Kelly, I was thinking of something like a 24 hour read-a-thon. More than that would be straining on most of us, though that can be done too if that idea is more popular.

If we have a thread/board for that, all participants can update their progress and what-not. Considering that all of us in here to somehow read 144 books a year (however easy or far-fetched the goal is), if we can all sit together at the same time (figuratively) and just read over a 24 hour period, it would be a lot of fun. We might even get a lot of reading done.

Those who are game for reading can sign up as readers. Those who can't commit long periods of time for reading, or just rather not be a reader, can be a cheerleader (who motivate the readers, make sure the event is running without troubles, even set up some mini-challenges along the way). Cheerleaders don't have to be here all the time.

I think this will be fun in this group. If there is a lot of interest, we can try this out, maybe even have more than one such event over the year. What say?

message 959: by Luce-Virlynn (new)

Luce-Virlynn | 45 comments I like that idea too. But that doesn't mean for all of us to slack off beacuse we know we will have more time in the summer. :)

message 960: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Aths, I think that's a great idea!! I bet a lot of people would be interested. Like you said, we're all striving to make 144 for the year, and this would be a great motivational tool for us to sit down and get some reading done. Also, I know that I myself feel guilty sitting down in the middle of the day and reading for hours, like I should be doing something else, so if other people are doing it at the same time then I wouldn't feel so guilty about it. It'd be something we are all doing together (all those who chose to participate anyways). Sounds awesome! :)

I am so like that too. There's a lot of work begging to be done at my end, that I feel very guilty when I pick a book to read. LOL! You are right, this could be a great way for us to pace up our reading and read to our hearts' content, if only for a limited time.

If a lot of people are interested, we can have a poll and see when to have our first Read-a-thon! :)

message 962: by Kelly (new)

Kelly p.s. Aths, feel free to set up a new thread on the discussion boards -- you can be in charge of the Read-a-Thon. :-) That is, if you want to be. Otherwise, if you're short on time, maybe someone else would like to volunteer to set things up.

I had to abandon one too, Pat, and I felt extremely ripped off by the author for wasting my time :( She must not know we're in a book challenge!!!

Kelly Great! :) I'll go take a look :)

message 967: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) or what you could do is do a read a thon over a period say a week or weekend

You wouldn't be reading the whole time but try reading as much as possible in that time and if you say got sponsership for how many books you read can read in that period and the money goes to charity it would motivate more and family members would be more understanding bout you reading and would get book levels up

message 968: by Julie (new)

Julie | 171 comments I finally finished Nineteen Minutes! It was very good once I got over my initial reading slump. Now I have to decide which book to start tomorrow! :)

message 969: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (inexplicablybookish) Hurray! In the wee hours of the morning I finished up book #6! I'm all excited I managed to finish another book before month's end. I honestly wasn't sure I could do it as book 6 dragged a bit for me. But I did!

My goal today is to read two (yes TWO!) shortish books I have had on the shelf a while, and then start my next real "novel" read. Which I intend to finish by March 5th at the latest so I can begin reading Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen with the Jane Austen group here.

Setting reading goals for myself has been helpful. Even I don't meet them and have to adjust, I've found telling myself "I want to finish this by *insert date*" gets me to remember to read more, instead of just zone out watching TV and the like. Now, if only I could get my job to be less insanely crazy busy so I could read on breaks/lunch again (oohhh to be able to take breaks and lunch! ;) ) I'd be a happy camper!

That also definitely sounds good. To assign a set of days for the read-a-thon. In that case, those who can read during all those days can go ahead, and others can take breaks if they wish. I'm thinking most of us would want to be readers, in that case, those of us willing can rotate the cheerleader role among ourselves.

Afsana and everyone interested in the read-a-thon, hop on over to the "Our very own Read-a-thon" thread, let's discuss there.

Wow, that is a lot of quilting you're doing! Could you listen to an audiobook while you work? Or does it take too much concentration? That way you could work and read!

And Aths, I like the idea of the read-a-thon! Although I don't think I'd get online to post my updates until afterward...the computer is already one of my biggest distractions from reading as much as I should! lol But then again, if I read for 24 hours straight, I'd probably need a break.

message 972: by Donnajo (last edited Feb 28, 2010 10:13AM) (new)

Donnajo I like the idea about the read a thon. I think it would be better for a few days than straight 24 hours.

Haha Rachel, I had the same thought. The computer just sucks you right in and before you know it, hours have gone by that you could have been reading. :) Breaks would be good for checking in with the group and updating progress.

No issues Rachel. The only rules of the Read-a-thon are to read, be honest of the number of books/pages, and just have fun! There won't be any posting requirements. So no worries about that! :) I will also have to limit my posts, since the internet IS a huge distraction for me, lol

message 975: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (inexplicablybookish) So, I did it! I finished my "long" book today, and read two other shorties, to bring my February total to 7 books, and my 2010 total to 8!

Yep, I'm far behind the 144 goal/monthly markers . . . but now I can see it's possible for me to buckle down in a weekend and read a few hundred pages in a few hours. Which means it *may* be possible for me to catch up. Or, at the very least, I'm going to be able to read more this year than I thought. So. Woo!

message 976: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Rebecca, you're doing awesome!!

message 980: by Julie (new)

Julie | 171 comments I am starting Sarah's Key. I have heard that it is really good, so I hope that it will be a good start to my March. I will really have to pick up my pace because I am only at 14 for the year. Reading 22 books this month to get caught up doesn't really seem possible with teaching and grad school, but I am going to do my best!!! :)

message 981: by Mel W (new)

I'll be starting Sarah's Key soon too, probably not until Saturday, but hopefully sooner. Don't worry about your "numbers". Those of us in the challenge are ranging all over the place ... some way ahead, some on track, others don't have as much, but I think we should focus us on our personal goals and enjoy the books we're reading, even if it's only one a month!

message 984: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) My book total is 30 as of the end of February. Thank goodness for those audio books, because I have been so busy this month. Now spring is coming and it's time to do yard work. It never ends!

Hey, you're a reader. Don't beat yourself up for a "good" bad habit. I used to keep all my books too, but find immense pleasure in passing them on now and seeing someone else enjoy them. We have a pretty small house so can't really let the books take over. Now, I pretty much keep just general reference and my art books.

message 986: by Catherine (new)

Catherine I'm really hoping to get rid of some books this year. I just have so many books I haven't read yet! I'm doing better about not buying more though, so at least that will help.

Wow, everyone is doing so great with the reading!!! Catherine, I whole-heartedly agree with what you said, and couldn't have said it any better myself. :) Let's all give ourselves a pat on the back for all these books that we're knocking off our TBR lists! I'm one of those who is "behind", with only 16 books read this year so far, but I know I could double that if I got myself a little more organized. Having the 144 goal ever-present is helpful because it reminds me that I really want to increase my reading time, no matter if I make the full 144 by the end of the year or not. I will strive to come as close as I can, because I seriously need to pare down my bookshelves and my TBR lists.

Again, great job everyone!!! :D

message 998: by ~Sara~ (new)

~Sara~ | 171 comments I'm reading #41, Fahrenheit 451 and am listening to #42, First Comes Marriage.
Although I'm ahead right now, it's only because it's too cold and snowy to do anything else but curl up and read. As soon as the warm weather hits my reading will slow considerably. Plus I'm back to school in September so I have to make it up now if I want to make the 144 goal.

message 999: by Ivy (last edited Mar 06, 2010 05:27AM) (new)

Ivy (luvbug) I have been doing okay for me at keeping up with reading. Last book I read (Eat, Drink, And Be Wary by Tamar Myers) was okay but not one that made me want to read more in the series.

I am currently reading Ghost at Work by Carolyn Hart. This is the first book in a new series she is writing. I think there is only one other book in the series. Only on page 26 and so far it is okay...will have to read more of it before I decide if I will be getting the rest of the books in the series.
