Afsana (afsanaz) with the readathon etc I am now on my 43rd book of the year

message 1152: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) Wow Afsana, that is cool.

Jim - Somehow I am not surprised that you are up to 51. You are a very fast reader!!

I am only on my 18th for the whole year, so I don't think I am going to make the 144, but I am still giving it the college try, and I am enjoying it nonetheless.

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 65 comments Well am happily surprised that so far i've finished 73 books this year. With so many changes going in my life i didn't think it would be this easy for me. I imagined myself trying to catch up in the last month by putting some all nighters, but am glad am ahead of my schedule so far.

Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments I finished #22 today and am working on #23 & #24. I am an entire month behind. I'm hoping to do better after May.

I totally agree with you. It makes me wonder where they get the time to read. I try to read when I can, but I have three kids and school. I don't know if I would ever get 50 books in by the third month of the year. LOL.

Great going ladies.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 158 comments Susan wrote: "It makes me wonder where they get the time to read"

Since I'm one of the 50+ book people, I can only tell you when I have the time. This morning I woke up at 4:30. I read about a half a book before I got out of bed at 6:45 when the kids left for school. Since I had today off of work, I did our taxes. Then I went to target and bought a few last minute items for our trip to California tomorrow (I live in Ohio). Then I went to the Bank. Then I went and bought my wife a new dress as a gift. While waiting in lines or at red-lights I read another 15-20 pages. Then I picked up lunch and sat in the sun and read some more. Then I hit the tanning parlor. Then I picked the youngest up from band practice. Then I took the dog for a walk and read some more. Then I did a couple of miles on the treadmill and read some more. While making dinner I finished my book. 342 pages over about 14 hours and I'm done with a new book started this morning.

Since I'm officially on vacation and my wife only works for about four hours tomorrow before our flight, I'll probably stay up and have drinks and lots of 'snuggle time' tonight. So I'll probably only read another 100 pages or so today.

Last week I read four books including the 570+ page Covet. I also worked two jobs totaling 72 hours. in the summer I work more and read less. I'll probably go down to 2-3 books a week for the summer months.

Contrary to rumor, I'm not a fast reader. I average less than a page a minute. However, I am persistent. If I'm stopped in traffic, I'll read. Waiting in line at a store, I'll read. Put a kettle on to make my wife a cup of tea, I'll read. Steeping the loose leaf tea, I'll read. Bathroom breaks involve a book. Meals not with the family have a book in my hand.

It can be done.

However, the real challenge is to get people to actively want to read more. 144 is just a number. Set your goal on whatever number you want. If 50 books in a year is better than last year, great! If 200 books is slowing down for you, pick a higher number. Last year I ended with 212 books. I'm a bit behind on that pace. But barely. My goal number is 200 again this year. We'll see if I can do it.

Keep reading. And most importantly, ENJOY!

message 1162: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Oh I'm sure my numbers will go down now that it is starting to get warm. I love riding motorcycles with my hubby, so there goes my reading time. Kinda hard to read on a motorcycle while going down the road. In a car is another story all together though.

message 1163: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Jim, enjoy your trip to CA. I probably could read more than I do and don't know why. Lately spending probably too much time on stuff I shouldn't be online. (games or whatever you want to call them for facebook) I should just go online and do what I have to with the boards and emails and get off. I should read more at night but if I have shows on tv I sometimes try and read on commercials sometimes I don't. Don't think I'll get my 12 books in this month. I have 10 so far. I know read harlequin. I did start a evanovich which I thought I would get though but my regular book a diane chamberlain grabbed me and I don't think I'll finish it today. If I don't get 12 in then for sure I'll do much better next month. I think the library books kept the count low for some reason that take me longer. I'm ahead as I mentioned maybe on another thread by 10 books from last year so that for me is good. I did errands today and I'm kind of on a hunt for something I can't find in the house. So have been stressing on that and searching. But once I get offline it will be reading the rest of the day.

message 1164: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 65 comments I have to agree with Jim. I pretty much read anytime i get a chance, even bathroom breaks....lovely ereaders are the best!LOL
I do better on the weekends though if i don't have any plans with friends and family. Since am single i don't have anyone but my dog to take care of.

message 1165: by Ronda (new)

Ronda Tutt (rondatutt) So far I have read 41 books for the year. This last month was a little slow for me but I still got in my 12 books.

I just finished Atlantis Unmasked by Alyssa Day

and now I am reading Angelology: A Novel by Danielle Trussoni

message 1166: by Amber (new)

Amber I'm doing pretty good with 38 so far! I'm trying to maintain 12 books a month so I can make the 144 by yearend. Of course, doing a reading challenge every month for ten and then a couple extras from swaps with my mother and friends should do it!

I discovered this series late last year and love it! I'm currently reading G is for Gumshoe. Enjoy A is for Alibi!

message 1168: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I finished another book today. Now I'm spending too much time online just wasting time when I should go eat my dinner and then get reading. Even if I start another book and not read something that I have started already. Whiskey sour by JA Konrath. I'm not in the mood for a mystery. But don't know what I feel like reading. Maybe I'll check the piles and see if something jumps out at me.

message 1169: by Wanda (new)

Wanda (wheeley) | 7 comments I'm a little behind - on book #32 G is for Gumshoe

So, at the end of March I'm 5 books behind schedule...not too bad ;)

message 1170: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (classmum) | 134 comments I am working on my 43rd book now. I read about an hour and a half a day before bed. As a teacher,I actually have read a lot more books that this but don't count those as they are children's books. They're several hundred pages but aimed at a Grade 6 level so wouldn't feel comfortable including those. My personal store of TBR is about 250 but I just keep finding new ones at the library to read so I wonder if I will ever get to them. I have another 300 or so children's books in my classroom. My husband put his foot down about those. They had to go but alas it just made room for me to buy more. Tee Hee.

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments Well, I broke into 3 digits when I finished my last book (Changeless by Gail Carriger) Now that April 1 has arrived, I'm getting to dive into my new books that just came out in the last 2 weeks--I do book challenges, and so I try to save the "new" ones (i.e. just released) for those. Now, here I come Mercy, Sam and Adam. AAAHHHH, nothing like a good book with a vampire and a couple of were-wolves all in love with a coyote skinwalker. :oP

message 1172: by Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (new)

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) Just finished #41: A Crazy Little Thing Called Death by Nancy Martin & now it's off to finish #42....

Deanna (classmum) | 134 comments That's awesome, congrats!

message 1174: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wldinnis) I just finished #42 Broken: A Novel by Karin Slaughter. It was a book I won on Goodreads and I was glad to read it even if I had never read the author's books before. What a great story.

message 1175: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) I really feel like I'm behind here :S
I only have 12 books so far, but I think once schools inished for the summer I'll be able to read more.

message 1176: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments Heather, I'm way behind also, but after all my TV shows end, I'll have plenty of time to read.

message 1178: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) I guess it's a good thing that I don't watch too many TV shows cause than I would be even further behind :P

message 1179: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I finished 2 books so far for this month.. Now I'm deciding what to start next. I should just keep reading Whiskey sour and try and get though that book.

message 1180: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) That's like a book per day! Now I feel really slow :P

message 1181: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo The one I finished yesterday I've been reading for a few days. Which I was surprised about since the author's books I usually zip though. Today's book I started reading some of it last night. And I read this morning before I went out before lunch then was back around 2 and finished it up. It was a fast book. And both were top raters for me. Usually after a top book it's hard for me to pick my next read because I expect something that grabs me right away. So we will see.

message 1182: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) I know what you mean, I have the same problem after reading a book that I really enjoyed.

message 1183: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo And I already know that sunday (easter) I will not get as much read as I would normally. I'll be at my sister's for the day or at least from 12 until probably dark. But I'll be home tomorrow so will try and get in some extra reading maybe.

message 1184: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) I'm hoping to get some in tonight and tomorrow, I want to finish the book I'm reading now.

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I just finished #52. #53 will be Winter Prey.
Hey Heather, don't sweat it just have fun.

message 1186: by Heather B (new)

Heather B (heatherbenson) Oh ya that's all I'm trying to do, it's really not a big deal to me it I don't make 144 books in a year, as long as I like the books that I do read.

Best of luck. I don't worry about number of books I read. I need 3-5 hours reading a day minimum for sanity. It is my way to destim and leave life's aggravations behind. Overall, a bit better than prescription anti-anxiety meds or eating tons of chocolate.

message 1189: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I don't know Donna, chocolate is pretty darn good. LOL

message 1190: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments hum, and here I thought that chocolate and books went together. :o) I know that I LOVE to sit with some chocolate and a good book. Hot chocolate, a candy bar, box of chocolates, whatever. Sigh, and I just got to thinking--I haven't had chocolate since NEW YEAR'S DAY. (dr has me on a very strict diet--its been almost that long since I had bread, ice cream, cookies, cake. . .)

message 1191: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments No chocolate since New Year's???That sounds quite depraved-oh I guess that should be deprived.
I have to have my chocolate daily along with my books or I am not fit to live with.

message 1192: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I've been staying way from sweets. Today I probably had the most I have since I got back on WW. And I know tonight sleeping it will hit. I had a small piece of this mudslide brownie and a small bunny and a piece of chocolate bark with nuts. Plus I was drinking a water bottle with that powder snapple ice tea. I'm tired but I'll probably up and jumpy tonight. Tomorrow it's back totally in control again epecially with journaling my food.

message 1193: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments Best of luck on the life without sweets. Better than no reading but (big sigh) so sad to miss all that lovely chocolate.

message 1194: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I was up at 3am just like I thought I had bought home a 1/2 piece of the chocolate mudslide and think I will freeze it.
Finished another book today another top read. So 4 books in 5 days. Good so far. Now deciding on my next one.

message 1195: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments I usually have no problems deciding my next book as I just check which book is due back at the library soonest. Since our library has decreased our hold list to 25 books, I have taken to putting holds on my husband's card or my daughter's card. Somehow, I currently have 80 library books to read. Hopefully, many of them will renew.. Fortunately, they have expanded the renewal periods so I can renew books twice. I generally keep ahead but sometimes a bunch of books come in at the same time and I get really pushed trying to read them. Returning a book unread feels like throwing away chocolate.

message 1196: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments Donna,

I usually don't either, but right now I am torn between 3 books and they are total opposites.

message 1197: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments Yup, hard to pick which is going to be the best entertainment when there are several to choose from and no outside pressure to finish the book and return it.

message 1198: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments Oh no, they are all library books due back about the same time. What I did was pick the smallest one until I decide which of the other two I want to read. I am already like it. I chose to read Letter to My Daughter by George Bishop. The other two are Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and Think Twice by Lisa Scottoline. See what I mean that they are totally different.

message 1199: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo Usually I don't do library too much and when I do I I get books off the new shelf and not many because I only get those for 14 days. Older ones it's 21 or around there days. If I do a reserve then usually I read those before whatever I'm reading of my own. Only a few times I got maybe 2 books that showed up at the same time and it's usually something both my sister and I both want to read. So she takes one and I take the other and we try and break up the amount of time so we get both in before they are due. Right now I only have 1 book on reserve and that is Worst case by Patterson. And it will probably not show up for awhile. My sister wants me to add a new mhc book.
So most of my reading is my own books which are I have enough for more than a lifetime and I keep adding to them (did borders today I already listed the new books under april new on my bookshelf at good reads if you want to see what I got you can friend me if you aren't a friend. And no all my books aren't listed there. at this point that would be a too big of a job to do. So I add some every once in awhile what I think I would read soon. Plus anything I've been buying this year I do a shelf for each month.

message 1200: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnasmith) | 124 comments I would so not be able to afford my reading habit if I had to buy my books. The library really is a budget saver for me. Ten books a week would really strain the budget and my floor space. Fortunately, our library system shares books between 13 or 14 libraries and their selection is pretty good so I only occasionally end up buying my books. Usually those are ones I want to read several times.
