"It means you always want to talk. That we've spent more than half the time we've known each other, standing right here: talking," Alek said, trying to keep her angry.
"Not that," Sabrina said, growing frustrated. "I'm talking this weird attitude you've had since yesterday. The one where you talk to me like I'm a little girl and all but ignore everything I say."
"Maybe I'm just coming to terms with the fact that this," he gestured to the two of them, "could never actually be anything real." The words practically burned his mouth, but it didn't show. "Your lifetime is next to nothing compared to mine. With less than an ounce of my strength I could crush every bone in your body. Besides you're leaving in a few months back to Ailey with your mother."
"Oh," Sabrina said hollowly, the expression in her eyes, whether angry or happy but always intense, cracking like glass until they were just kind of broken looking. "So I take it that means you don't want to go to the dance tonight? Or...really anything else?"
Tears swam in Sabrina's eyes. "Yeah, ok," she said, looking at his feet rather than his face. "I guess I can't argue with you." she turned to leave, then paused and looked back. "I just want to say it once, then I promise I'll stop bothering you; I love you Alek. Not 'I might' or 'sometimes'. I just...do. But I guess that's my problem now, right?" she said. She attempted a smile, but just looked painful and then she continued walking, shoulders slumped slightly.
It took everything Alek had not to go after her then, but he was sure it was best for him not to. "Just don't go back to your mother house please," he said, from the doorway. "I still care about what happens to you, and I don't want you to be a sitting duck for Henry. I talked to Susannah and Jacob and they said you could stay with them; your stuff us already there."
"You didn't have to be a jerk about it earlier." Sabrina replied. "You could have just told me. I like to talk, remember?" she finished, her sarcasm weighed down with disappointment.
Sabrina nodded. "Yeah, ok. See you...whenever, I guess." she said. She leaned over to give him a last kiss on the cheek, and when her lips touched his skin, two things happened simultaneously; Alek's heart beat twice and Sabrina fainted.
Sabrina shook her head. "Ok, see you around." she opened the door and hopped out, but had to catch herself with the door when the world started to spin. "Woah." she said. "That's not normal."
Sabrina fell to the floor, gaining consciousness in time to keep her face from slamming into the concrete. She pulled herself to her feet, leaning heavily against the car. "Yup, totally not normal." she said.
"If Alek wanted our relationship to be logical, he should have broken it off a long time ago. It's easier to part ways with someone if you aren't already in love with them." Sabrina said.
Jacob shook his head.
