Alistair Potter | 24 comments Hi - I'm in the pre-release stages of a new SF action adventure/crime novel Perax Frontier, ...it's all polished and properly edited (surely no typos I haven't spotted!), so I'm looking for some early reviews to appear here on goodreads.

Perax Frontier by Alistair Potter Perax Frontier

Blurb; Advanced technology is just one of the things that don't work on the Perax Frontier, the only known interface between this and another universe. Located on a toroidal asteroid sitting on the surface of the huge and invisible Perax Sphere, the most dangerous spatial anomaly yet encountered, is a frontier colony devoid of all electrically based technologies. Sheriff Artur Perax keeps order among the visitors, frustrated scientists, religious fanatics, and plain good folks who keep the flow of trade goods moving across the Interface. And all under the watchful eyes of two Universes (universii?) of worlds, all desperate to find some way to profit from this incredible and perplexing phenomenon.

Follow the goodreads link above for a first chapter preview, and if you like what you see, why not PM me to arrange for a .mobi or .pdf review copy of the novel?

Cheers, Alistair.

Hi Renata, thanks for responding. Much appreciated. If you PM (personal message) me on my goodreads author page - (there's a little drop down 'communication' menu under an arrow below my picture) I'll get hold of your email address and send it to you as a PDF or Kindle type file, whatever you can read easily on an electronic device. How does that sound?

I also noticed the 'read' link for the first chapter excerpt on goodreads wasn't working over the weekend, but is working now if you'd like to take a look.

Alice Cradle | 4 comments Hi. My pen name is B.Campbell and I have a sci-fi book on Kindle Scout that uses nominations from readers to get it and other books published.
The novel is Whom the Wanted Wickeds Rake and, anyone can freely read the first chapter on the Kindle Scout site. Anyone who nominates it for publication gets the book free when its released..

It is about a world where genetic engineering is the biggest worldwide industry and people combined their DNA with animals, machines and even flowers. Yet something went wrong with the technology and many people ended up deformed. Or dying.

There is mass-discrimination against the genetic failures and celebration of the successes. It gets so bad government mandates that everyone wear holographic masks that can hide any physical deformity one might have. Masks that are used to level the playing field.

It follows a healthy girl and boy masked from the moment their born. There is also mysterious pair of powerful, ancient, cybernetic entities whom watch over the world. One is trying to destroy it. The other to save it.

At one time, "Shepherds" was my best selling book, surpassed now by "Fall of the Western Kings." It remains my highest rated novel on Amazon. The ebook version of Shepherds is now on sale for 50% off.

Shepherds by J. Drew Brumbaugh

In the future, with the oceans dying, Olga, a mermaid, engineered from birth to live at sea and work for a giant seafood company. She is lonely and jealous of her married shipmates, thinking that she’ll never meet a man in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Fate has other plans and will drop an industrious, independent fisherman in her lap. That would be great except there are people looking to kill them both. How will they survive long enough to know if they are the perfect match?
Toivo is struggling trying to make a living catching what few wild tuna are left in the ocean and even though he has the help of two dolphins, things are not going so well. If he only knew the danger he was sailing into and what the fates had in store.
Action, adventure and romance wrapped up in a near-future science fiction account that might be possible and suggests one way that seafood can remain plentiful in the face of rising over-fishing.

Robert Eggleton | 4 comments Hi,

Rarity from the Hollow by Robert Eggleton, an adult literary novel with a social science fiction backdrop that was published by a traditional small press. The final edition was released to Amazon on December 5, 2016: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017REIA44/....

Blurb:

Lacy Dawn's father relives the Gulf War, her mother's teeth are rotting out, and her best friend is murdered by the meanest daddy on Earth. Life in the hollow is hard. She has one advantage -- an android was inserted into her life and is working with her to cure her parents. But, he wants something in exchange. It's up to her to save the Universe. Lacy Dawn doesn't mind saving the universe, but her family and friends come first.

Rarity from the Hollow is adult literary science fiction filled with tragedy, comedy and satire. A Children's Story. For Adults.

“The most enjoyable science fiction novel I have read in years.”

—Temple Emmet Williams, Author, former editor for Reader’s Digest

“Quirky, profane, disturbing… In the space between a few lines we go from hardscrabble realism to pure sci-fi/fantasy. It’s quite a trip.”

— Evelyn Somers, The Missouri Review

. "…a hillbilly version of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy…what I would have thought impossible; taken serious subjects like poverty, ignorance, abuse…tongue-in-cheek humor without trivializing them…profound…a funny book that most sci-fi fans will thoroughly enjoy." -- Awesome Indies (Gold Medal)

“…sneaks up you and, before you know it, you are either laughing like crazy or crying in despair, but the one thing you won’t be is unmoved…a brilliant writer.” --Readers’ Favorite (Gold Medal)

“Rarity from the Hollow is an original and interesting story of a backwoods girl who saves the Universe in her fashion. Not for the prudish.” —Piers Anthony, New York Times bestselling author

“…Good satire is hard to find and science fiction satire is even harder to find.” -- The Baryon Review

Requests for reviews of the final edition of Rarity from the Hollow are now being considered. On 1-6-17, the first was published, five stars. To facilitate your consideration of reviewing this novel, the closing lines were: "…Brilliant satires such as this are genius works of literature in the same class as Orwell’s 'Animal Farm.' I can picture American Lit professors sometime in the distant future placing this masterpiece on their reading list." https://marcha2014.wordpress.com/2017... On 2-17-17, Dan'l Danehy-Oakes, a critic whose book reviews often appear in the New York Review of Science Fiction, published his review of the final edition, five stars: "…I know this all sounds pretty whack, and it is, but it's also quite moving. Lacy Dawn and her supporting cast - even Brownie, the dog - are some of the most engaging characters I've run across in a novel in some time…." http://sturgeonslawyer.livejournal.com/

Message me and I'll provide more detail to help you determine if this novel is within your comfort zones and reviewing interests.

It's a coming-of-age adventure story that readers of all ages have enjoyed. The book has 80+ positive reviews on Amazon so far and 16 on Goodreads.

Sci-Fi Fantasy World called it "A sweet coming-of-age tale in an enthralling world, mixing epic fantasy with a dash of steampunk that includes sailing airships, exploding gas-bubbles, and floating islands!"

TeenReads said "The Sailweaver's Son creates an innovative, steampunk, fantastical world...the story intertwines actual science with magic that astounds."

More info, including links to these full reviews and many more are on my website: https://www.jeffminerd.com/

I plan to run a giveaway on Goodreads soon and will post about that here too.

Andrew Hiller (hedrew2) | 23 comments I couldn't disagree more with the advice not to use an editor. I ran an international news bureau for 3 years and worked with NPR stations for six years before that. Everyone needs an editor.

It is very difficult to read what you write. A second eye is essential to inform the writer what's not clear, what's over written, and where the writer just fell off the cliff. There are two caveats: An editor's changes are suggestions. They are not always right and their snips and adds are not always the correct ones for the story you are telling. Second: Get the story as perfect as you can before you send it to the editor. Don't make them guess. Don't make them re-write your story. Their job is to polish while yours is to design, sculpt, glaze, and engrave.

Editors are an essential part of the process. Every pro needs a second or third set of eyes. Even then, something will always get missed. You find typos even in major best sellers coming out of the biggest houses. Now, your editor can be your beta reader, spouse, friend or a pro... but find someone you trust who understands the genre.

Alistair is correct that your story must remain yours, but a good editor doesn't change that. A good editor doesn't make you flabby. Rather, a good editor can be a personal trainer that makes sure your form is good so that you don't hurt yourself while maximizing your workout.

Andrew

I agree completely. I'm a freelance editor as well as a published author (under a pen name). I still send my manuscripts to an editor before publishing and I'm constantly surprised at the number of errors a different pair of eyes find, in spite of my going over my ms several times before then.

I used to be a programmer and another programmer could find an error of mine in seconds when I couldn't after an hour of staring at the code. When you look at something long enough, the errors look "right" to you and you gloss over them.

I can follow the argument from all sides, and they do make sense.

So I do need to qualify what I said;

At what point on the continuum from...

...being a complete newbie, amateur, inexperienced writer, without a clue how to construct a novel, and making all the really basic mistakes like; over-writing movement and emotion, and creating those pages of dialogue full of nodding-dog syndrome characters, all spinning like tops as they constantly 'turn' to each other, and who are also trapped in long episodes of 'staring', 'glancing', and 'looking meaningfully' at each other - just to complete a line of dialogue... ...a line that's constantly qualified by an exaggerated emotional tagline that was already obvious from context. Or, those long involved two-way conversations at the start of a chapter where we have no idea who is speaking; male, female, android, talking dog or robot, and which occur in black voids of nothing, except 'of course' in the author's head, but they forgot to share any that with the reader.

...and there's so many more examples.

At what point on that continuum from 'gormless newbie' to 'polished writer' (maybe one running an international news bureau) do you call-in the editor?

The point I was making is - if you never sort those newbie issues that we ALL start with, then it's unlikely you'll get close to producing text that is worth paying money to get a professional editor to have a look at. (Of course, if you've got the money to pay an editor to keep correcting the same poorly-written copy over and over - then that is your choice.) And those 'unprofessional' editors - do they know any more than you do about the craft of writing? Probably less if they haven't knocked-out the many thousands of words required to produce even a first-draft of a novel.

I've no problem with using my friends as typo-hounds, sniffing-out those elusive little 'beggars', and I'm all ears if they say a bit was slow or confusing, or the plot was weak or had a flaw, but the rest is 'my job', 'my work', 'my creative output'. And I take pride in that, including the basic stuff.

Plus, and here's the kicker - I've pulled apart work that was 'in print', but still IMHO required an awful lot of polishing - full of really basic mistakes. And the almost incredulous response I got from the author was - 'but I sent it to a paid editor'!

Truly in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is King. But in the land of telescopic vision, he's no great shakes.

My tuppence-worth (dime) for all it's worth. :-) Alistair.

Cain Hopwood | 2 comments Precursor Revenants (The Precursor Series Book 1)

Hi all, My latest book Precursor Revenants, book one in the precursor trilogy, is now available. It's entered in the Kindle storyteller comp, so is only available from Amazon for now. It's already got a good mix of reviews, and if the number of people asking when book two is available is any indication, I must have done something right.

Blurb and link follow:

Jon Moss is used to doing dirty jobs for politically expedient reasons in far-flung places across the globe. He may not like it, but it's part of the job. Well, it is when you’re part of the special forces group known as The Regiment. Sometimes the problem is a dictator, sometimes a whole government. But whatever the problem, The Regiment always finds a solution.

When an unknown comet appears in the skies above Earth, like most people, Jon doesn’t give it a second thought. But when the comet is revealed to be a ship, an envoy from a galactic society, it’s time for Earth to sit up and listen.

The technology on offer is staggering, but there’s a price. The galactics need help with a few small ‘domestic problems’, ones that Jon and the Regiment are used to solving.
Soon Jon and the unit find themselves deployed off-world, where they must learn to fight in strange new environments and adapt to new weapons to survive.

But, what does this highly structured galactic society really want with humans? And, why have they waited until now to make contact? On the frozen rocky world called Marbel, Jon’s team discover that not everything is quite as it seems. It’s a hard-fought discovery for which they may just pay the ultimate price.

Link to Kindle version on Amazon

“Cain V. Hopwood’s Precursor Revenants combines zero gravity battles, alien technology and occasionally skiing. It’s space opera, but with down to earth, relatable characters, giving a new and welcome twist to the genre.”

C.E. Gee | 182 comments A private detective named Russ Dymond who is searching for a missing person on Mars provides the gist of this story.

“Dymond in the Rough” by C.E. Gee takes place in the Martian City of Bradbury.

Those of you who remember the hippy-dippy daze of the late 1960’s might get a chuckle out of the Martian neighborhood where the search takes place.

If you’re into “souls or spirits” there’s much about such in this story.

The propulsion system that drives the commercial spaceship Russ uses in his trip to Mars from Earth utilizes Einstein’s theory of relativity. Those of you of a technical mindset should find the propulsion system interesting.

The technique used by Russ to find the missing person should educate persons interested in detectives and their methods.

Enjoy!

J.M. Kaukola | 7 comments Hello!

My name is Joseph, and I have just published my first novel, The Sword. This is a military science fiction thriller, with some influence from the post-cyberpunk genre. The novel is set in a world where humanity is racing an extinction clock - technology has advanced, but mankind has not. The ghosts of a dead AI stalk the net. Failed transhuman supermen wage war against tyrannical regimes. Flying cars, wetware computers, and genetic engineering have allowed humanity to survive the Collapse, but the sins of the past weigh heavy on the foundering societies that have emerged.

When truth and lies collide, and a mission goes tragically wrong, the men and women of the Terran Provisional Authority's Special Operations Command find themselves wedged between the implacable forces of history, and doomed ambitions of dead men. Forced into an alliance of soldiers, spies, hackers, and criminals, this motley band must stand alone against an insurmountable threat.

To fail, is extinction.

The world is dead. Long live the world.

M.L. McIntosh | 10 comments Hallo! I write both science fiction and fantasy. I've added my first fantasy novel Thin Places below. My very unserious science fiction novel is Time to Burn. I don't currently have a giveaway going on but I will soon, I promise!
I am currently putting together the marketing and promo materials for my near future sci fi novel with a religious/philosophical twist (what science fiction doesn't have that kinda twist?) If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to send you a pdf or mobi preview of the first fifty pages or so in exchange for some feedback and good vibes when I drop the book.
Oh, and here's the good reads link to Time to Burn. It's so silly, I love it.

Laura (narrina) | 21 comments Hi! I'm new to the group and just self-published my first book. It's a young adult/new adult steampunk action/adventure with a splash of romance and is the first in a series.

Miss Gemquist and the Pearl of Peking
Miss Gemquist and the Pearl of Peking (The Gemquist Chronicles, #1) by Laura R. Hepworth

One note, one pearl, and one family secret.

Miss Loralai Gemquist, the 23-year-old daughter of famed gemologist Jacob Gemquist and granddaughter of Lord Bramwell Gemquist, The Baron of Aethleton, thought that her life couldn’t get more difficult than surviving the London Season and the schemes of her match-making aunts. But when she discovers an anonymous note, her life will never again be the same. Thrust into a world of shadows, secrets, and intrigue, she’ll be forced to use all her wits, intellect, and knowledge of gemstones as she tries to prevent a war when a priceless, Chinese pearl is stolen. Along the way, she’ll meet some unexpected allies and make some dangerous enemies as she learns who she can trust, but just one false step and it will be more than her life on the line.

Seaby Brown | 4 comments I'm (finally) joining the list of published novelists. I had previously contributed to a dry and boring textbook on mobile displays (like the one in your smartphone) and an essay in a biz book... but now I have my own SciFi novel available for pre-order:

https://www.amazon.com/ALL-STARS-SUNS...

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Sincerity Espinoza didn't go looking for trouble, it found her. All she wants out of life is the chance to go to the stars but she is caught in a web of misunderstandings, political & legal maneuvering, and the growing threat of terrorist plots by religious fanatics. She has a secret that if found out too soon could mean not only her own death but the ruin of the hope for humanity ever going to the stars. But even amist momentus events, life is still about the small moments of love, laughter, and sadness.

Written by a Seaby Brown, a successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur and high tech inventor, the story is as much a prediction of where we will be in the future as it is a work of fiction. It melds social, political, and tech trends into a realistic portrayal of advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, cybernetics, aerospace engineering, genetics engineering, and neural interface technology that will become common place. In a world that has grown cynical about "progress", All The Stars Are Suns is a hopeful and optimistic look into our future.

C.E. Gee | 182 comments Science Fiction gives this Police Procedural story a unique and intriguing twist.
Rick Reall is chief detective of the Vice Squad. His wife Cynthia-Ann is a former prostitute.
The Vice Squad is ordered to work with the Homicide Department given the murder of a known prostitute.
You’ll very much enjoy this story if you’re into Jack the Ripper, aliens from other planets, police department tactics and operations.

Fabia Scali-Warner | 1 comments Growing up is hard. Even more so when you are forcibly recruited to work for a ruthless government, ruling with an iron fist over the scattered remains of humanity in a post-apocalyptic future. However, you do learn quickly when every choice you make spells the difference between life and death.

Think hard, but not too much.
Conform, but always keep your willpower on display.
Keep your feelings in check, and you may yet survive.
