Iran is in the news these days and I find the issues compelling, so I enjoyed reading Libby Fischer Hellmann’s new novel, A Bitter Veil, set in the midst of the Iranian revolution that brought Khomeini to power. A good read and a great way to absorb the background info of the current problems. Two essential themes predominate in this viscerally effective novel: the fate of women when their choices have been taken from them and the banality of evil, to borrow a phrase applied to the Nazis—who also appear in this book if somewhat indirectly. Here’s my review.
I'm reading Void Moon by Michael Connelly. Not one of the Harry Bosch series. Connelly amazes me with his impeccable attention to realistic detail. He pulls that off without getting boring. About half way through, a good book.

Curious how you find it compared with originalwritten by the Late Mr. Sheldon..has the writing style changed due to the new writer? ect.

I'm reading a bunch of posts on goodreads. I have no idea why I'm doing this; a strange and troubling compulsion perhaps.
I'm currently reading The Book of Negroes: A Novel and The Talented Mr. Ripley. I don't usually read two fiction books at the same time but found the first one too emotionally draining to read continuously and need breaks from it. Both so far are excellent.

Today, I've resumed reading The Guy Liddell Diaries: 1939-1942, Mi5's Director of Counter-Espionage in World War II by Guy Maynard Liddell.Liddell was the head of Britain's counter-espionage program during the Second World War. The book is a collection of observations/impressions Liddell had dictated to his secretary on any given day during the war about the various intelligence activities he was involved in. This was all done in secret and the resulting diary was kept under lock and key. Historical espionage stories are soooo fascinating.

I think the politicians back in the day were far more ruthless about killing each other off when necessary. Our modern politicians probably long for "the good old days." :)
I just finished The Enemy by Lee Child and am in the middle of Teenagers by Samantha Steele (a young indie).
Still working on Schindler's List. Recently finished Agent 6 by Tom Rob Smith and Archive 17 by Sam Eastland and enjoyed both very much. Will begin Polar Star by Martin Cruz Smith tomorrow.
I am reading In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson for my book club, The Twin by Gerbrand Bakker, Travels With Myself and Another by Martha Gellhorn, and Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins by Emma Donoghue.

HaHa! true!but so funny reading about all the backstabbing and trying to curry favor with whoever they felt was in charge- then switching on a dime when they were wrong. Of course they had The Tower to toss any foe in those days- and unlike Northcumberland who has Sommerset hung so he could take power over Edward- now we have character assassination aided by the entertainment "reality" shows today's media have become- always looking for the next juicy story- Authentic Journalism breathed it's last breath with the tragic death of Tim Russett.

Actually, considering many of today's politicians, I long for those good old days.

A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Marthin
Martin I am reading because I want to and am behind on this series. The others I also am enjoying and are friends of mine but am undertaking at this juncture for my twitter live interview series upon which they will be my next two guests.
I've just started Pro Luce Habere (To Have Before the Light) Volume 1, by my Goodreads friend Krisi Keley. It's the first volume of a two-volume prequel to her On the Soul of a Vampire (which I listed as one of my top reads for 2011).
Hi, I'm about half way through Spare Change by Bette Lee Crosby and I'm really enjoying it! I needed a new women's fiction and this one really fit the bill. Good stuff.

I have both of his Mike Cramer series, 6 of his Spider Shepherd series and 4 of his Jack Nightingale series. So I am looking forward to reading them too.
Finally finished The Truce - E. Milan. Now I think I will read The Guardian's Apprentice - J. Michael Radcliffe.
Am reading THE NAME OF THE STAR, by Maureen Johnson. It was nominated for an Edgar this year, so I picked it up. Very good so far, with a very strong YA voice and a Jack the Ripper theme. This was an interesting surprise, as I just watched the first three episodes of WHITECHAPEL, which has the same theme, but from an adult perspective!
Finally read A Separate Peace, forty some years after it appeared on my high school reading list. Old Mrs. Lambert, I hope you're smiling.
Jerry wrote: "Finally read A Separate Peace, forty some years after it appeared on my high school reading list. Old Mrs. Lambert, I hope you're smiling."I've had my eye on that one will be curious to know what you think of it!

I enjoyed it very much. As a coming of age story built on a group of boys at a boarding school it may not resonate with you. But it covers quite a few salient points of youth and it is really well written.
Just started City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. Wanted to read this because almost everyone that has read it had RAVED about it.

Thanks I will have to bump it up on my TBR list!
After enjoying the play twice and the PBS broadcast last year, I'm finally reading Les Misérables. The ABRIDGED version is over 500 pages. A very different style of writing (of course), once you adjust to that, it's very enjoyable. It's much like the play, plus learning the histories of the characters before they walked onto the stage of the play version. Hugo created quite a web of characters intercepting each others' lives, something you really get to appreciate when you read the book.
