Here's a brief summary:

Small-time businessman, John Horton, leaves for his annual weekly tour of the countryside, but does not return home. A few days later, his wife Ethel, is found dead with John's wallet lying beside her body. Inspector Kendall, along with Sergeant Wade, tries to trace the missing man. Their investigation takes them to a sinister inn and even more sinister house.

This is #3 in the Inspector Kendall series.
