Rosh ~catching up slowly~ (roshreviews) | 764 comments Three books in an upcoming historical fiction series by J.H. Foster. The WWII story setting might be done but the approach makes this series different.

1. The Rebellious Maus and the Pogrom
The Rebellious Maus and the Pogrom (Rebels and Resistance) by J.H. Foster
The prequel that fulfils its duty well.

The main novel, written from the point of view of a young Jewish mother and aimed at adult readers.

3. Boy, Resisting - Silent, Spy, Survivor?
Boy, Resisting - Silent, Spy, Survivor? (Rebels and Resistance) by J.H. Foster
A companion novel with the same events as in the main novel, but written from the point of view of her young son and aimed at tweens and younger teens.

The set is surprisingly effective as a package deal. I love the idea of a parent-child buddy read with such a series.

The Berry Pickers – Amanda Peters – 5***** and a ❤
In 1962, an indigenous family from Nova Scotia arrives in Maine to pick blueberries for the summer; a month into the season their youngest child disappears. This was a wonderful book. The characters come alive on the page. Their hurts, joys, struggles, connections, love, tenderness, anger, frustration and pain are shown through their actions and reactions.

PattyMacDotComma | 272 comments An odd, very short read is the story Aghwee The Sky Monster by Japanese writer Kenzaburō Ōe. His bio on GR says in 1994, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for creating "an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today."

Of course I read the English translation, but I assume it is every bit as intriguing and quirky in Japanese.
Aghwee The Sky Monster by Kenzaburō Ōe My review of Aghwee The Sky Monster

I've added a link to an English translation of the story where you can read or download it.
