Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid is a character driven love story set against the backdrop of the acceptance of women into NASA's space shuttle program in the 1980s. The historical aspects of the program and society at the time were well done, although I would have liked a bit more detail about the astronauts' training.

I just finished Empire Falls and loved it, but I must admit to being partial to Richard Russo already. I have read and enjoyed the "Fool" series and a couple of others.

While I think the complicated webs woven in 'community' stories are universal, he captures a tone that feels particular to a small-town America that's been disappearing.
