Lea's Individual Challenge - Filling in the Gaps

Yes! You can buy Amish books that are fat and sassy! I have several, so don't worry, I'll review them as I go. They need to be read so I can make more space for other books. :-)

Yes! You can buy Am..."
I'm looking forward to it. Especially the sassy part.

I have been trying to limit my Amish reading to one series per year, but we'll see. My memory might fade as the year progresses. :-)
Nice to see you've started the Tommy and Tuppence books, Lea. I'm just finishing my last one in the series. You're right, it's a fun series.

Yes! After I finish all these GRC Awards, I think I'm going to read or re-read my way through the Christie novels. :-)

Recently finished:
The Overnight Guest - I loved this mystery/thriller about a small town in Iowa and a missing child. However, the dual timeline was a bit confusing, I disliked being hauled back and forth so often. 3 stars
The Killer Inside Me - This was a buddy read with Alissa and my first book by Jim Thompson, a writer who Stephen King referred to as his favorite crime novelist. The book was about a well-liked deputy sheriff in a town in Texas, and it is intense. I wanted a scalding hot shower after reading this book to wash all the ick off, but I cannot deny that this book was engaging. I am amazed that this book was written in 1952, way before Ted Bundy and other serial killers were sensationalized. 3 stars
Imperfect Bliss - My favorite part of this book is that it is over and I don't have to read it anymore. It's a Pride & Prejudice modern day retread and it didn't work for me. 1 star
The Happy Ever After Playlist - I enjoyed the second book in the series by Abby Jimenez, and I'm looking forward to reading more. I have a few quibbles here and there, but overall, I enjoyed it, and will be reading the final book in the series soon. 3 stars
Currently reading:
The Shadow Rising - This is the fourth book in the Wheel of Time series, but the books are so long that it feels like I've read more. This book is 1,007 pages, and I'm almost done. I'm wondering how it is all going to end.
Mrs. Mike - This is a re-read of a childhood favorite and so far, it's holding up nicely.
Goals -
1. One Tome a Month - In the middle of The Shadow Rising
2. Finish One Series a Month - Nope, not yet
3. Finish One Book from Shelves a Month - The Happy Ever After Playlist!
4. Made progress on GRC Awards - In the middle of The Shadow Rising, which gets me further in a series that won a GRC Award

I read The Overnight Guest with a book club. I did like it though I think the group had mixed reactions. (Pretty normal for that group.) I enjoy a dual-timeline, so that didn't bother me.
You know, I think I have a copy of Mrs. Mike I've never read. I'll look forward to hearing how it holds up for you.

Thanks, Bill. I'm hoping that the award for Worst Book this month won't require much thought. If it does....I think I need someone else to pick out my books. :-)

Michelle, have you read the sequels? I'm not sure about them. The first book was published in 1947 and the next book in 2002. I often find that when there is that long of a gap in between books, sometimes the writing style changes. However, in an effort to cut down on my ongoing series, I picked this series to focus on this year.

I didn't even realize there was a sequel. I'm going to wait for you to preview it for me. That seems like too big of a gap. I'm skeptical.

Imperfect Bliss - My favorite part of this book is that it is over and I don't have to read it anymore. It's a Pride & Prejudice modern day retread and it didn't work for me. 1 star"
Sometimes, that’s the best you can say about a book, lol
Hope you don’t come across anymore stinkers!

I was hoping you'd already previewed it for me. :-)
I'm a bit skeptical too, so I ordered it from the library instead of purchasing. Normally, I would just buy the sequels since I loved the first book so much, but I'm unsure about this. Hopefully I'll get it soon, the library says it is "in transit."

Hope you don’t come across anymore stinkers!"
LOL, you're right! I hope I don't come across any more stinkers either. :-)

I thought of you while reading it. I don't think you'll be disappointed you read it. I haven't read anything else by Thompson, but I hope to. Have you read anything else by him?

The Shadow Rising - This is the fourth book in the Wheel of Time series, which is a fourteen-book series. It is high fantasy, and I'm still enjoying it. The characters are growing up and it is interesting to see the changes to them. So many details and such a long book and such a long series, but so far, the books have held my interest. 3 stars
Shadow Kiss - The next book in the Vampire Academy series, book 4 in a six book series with two tweeners. Oh, the ending to this one! I am worried about where we are going next with one, this may be where the series jumps the shark with me. 3 stars
Mrs. Mike - As a child, this was a 5-star book, but with this re-read, it's more of a 4-star book to me. It is a story set in the 1900s about a young girl who travels to Calgary to recover from pleurisy and falls in love with the Canadian wilderness. It was published in 1947 and you can tell, but overall, I enjoyed reading it all over again. 4 stars
Wrath of the Triple Goddess - It's another Percy Jackson story as Percy tries to make it through his senior year of high school and get one of the recommendations he needs for college, this time from Hecate, the goddess of magic. 3 stars
We Used to Live Here - This was a truly creepy book and I wish I hadn't thought so hard about it. Besides a few things that don't make sense to me, this book was a complete mind bender and I enjoyed it so much. 3.5 stars
The One - What if you could take a DNA test and have the potential to be matched with the partner that you've been genetically made for? Maybe eventually divorce and heartache will be a thing of the past? Of course, right now, these test results have caused the breakup of countless relationships and changed what people are looking for in a partner. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Marrs books are ones I can't think too hard about, but the concept is always so good. 4 stars
Apprentice to the Villain - This is the second book in the series and it wasn't as fun as the first one, to me. I was disappointed. The book jumped around and I felt like I could sense what was going to happen before it did. Were the characters having a quiet moment together? Which interruption is coming this time? It all became feeling very formulaic to me. And I found myself not caring about all of the new characters POV that were introduced. I also felt like we didn't really get anywhere. I'll probably read the next book, but I do not have high expectations for it anymore. 2 stars
Games Untold: An Inheritance Games Collection - At first this was going to be a "tweener" book and then there would be a final book in the series...but the final book became a new series and so this is the end of it for now. I really enjoyed half of the short stories and was meh on the other ones, but it was better than I expected. It wasn't so good that it made me eager to read the Grandest Game series. We'll see. I'm not adding it to my series list just yet. 3 stars
The Search for Joyful - So this is the second book in the Mrs. Mike series and it isn't as good as the first book. Somehow, I expected worse, though. This is about growing up a different race than your adopted parents and struggling to find your way in the world. But, certain things bugged me. One of the characters continually refers to herself as a First Nations person, but the story is set during World War II, and that term was not commonly used until the 1970s. You know, sometimes when there are 55 years between the first book and the next book in the series, the entire tone of the book changes. 3 stars
Currently reading:
The Fires of Heaven - Grinding through book #5 in the Wheel of Time series
Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking - I've barely started this one.
Goals -
1. One Tome a Month - The Shadow Rising was over 1,000 pages
2. Finish One Series a Month - Wrath of the Triple Goddess and Apprentice to the Villain temporarily finished out some series, but more will come later. Games Untold: An Inheritance Games Collection should have completed a series for good, but we'll see. As we can see from Mrs. Mike above, sometimes a sequel comes 55 years later...
3. Finish One Book from Shelves a Month - The Happy Ever After Playlist!
4. Made progress on GRC Awards - The Shadow Rising and Shadow Kiss both got me further in a series that won a GRC Award, but I didn't actually read any winners this month. :-(
Best Book: The One
Worst Book: Imperfect Bliss
Biggest Surprise: We Used to Live Here
Greatest Accomplishment: I still seem to be on track for all my goals

1. One Tome a Month - The Shadow Rising was over 1,000 pages"
Great reading month! This is the one that, to me, is the most impressive feat, 1000 page book! Saw that it was the 4th in the series. Are the others just as long?

Michelle, I think you've made a good decision regarding the Mrs. Mike series. I wouldn't recommend it to others.
I have many series that I've also abandoned, but for some reason, I decided to read this one. Maybe so you all don't have to. :-)

Book #3 was 624 pages, which has been the shortest so far. I'm currently reading The Fires of Heaven which is 912 pages long. So far, it hasn't been too bad, but I've heard that some of the middle books are slogs that I'll have to suffer through to get to the ending which is supposed to be amazing. We'll see if I agree with the consensus. :-)
Another excellent month and you're really getting through some of your series. Good luck in April.

Thanks, Bill. I did add several series this month, so I felt like I needed to make some progress as well. :-)

Thanks, Karol. You too! I love how you are clearing through your older books; I may have to do that one of these years! :-)

I start out strong, and then I get distracted, so we'll see how I do in a month or so. I rebel against anything that is too structured too, so I have to have some wiggle room! :-)

I know what you mean, his books are highly implausible, yet incredibly addictive and I can't put them down. I'm going to finish out the series, hopefully. The goal is to read the next one this month -The Marriage Act. We'll see.

I do think I'll read something else by Thompson (author of The Killer Inside Me), but I think he'll be on my list of authors where I only read one book per year by them. More might just ruin the shock value.
If you haven't read anything by Marrs, you might try something by him sometime. I enjoyed The One and The Passengers so far. You can't think too hard about his books, but I've found them highly addictive and plain fun to read!

I think I have even more than that. In our defense, he does write a lot of books! :-)

The Fires of Heaven - I hardly know how to review series books without spoiling previous books in the series that someone may have not already read. This is book #5 in a #14 book series, and it's a very character driven fantasy novel. I will say that Jordan could have used a stricter editor. There was a lot of unnecessary straightening of clothes, and the book is over 900 pages, so I feel several of those could have been cut. I do think the conflict is narrowing into a gender war, and I'm not sure I'm here for that. Yet, the world building is so great, and the characters have so many great moments. I'm glad I'm finally getting to read these. 3 stars
The Third Gilmore Girl - I have watched A Chorus Line on stage more than once and am ashamed to admit that I had no clue about Kelly Bishop's relationship to the show. I listened to the audio which she narrated, and I enjoyed it very much and learned a lot. I wouldn't have picked this book up except that it won GRC Awards, and that would have been a mistake. 3 stars
Kathy Little Bird - So, this is the third book in the Mrs. Mike series, and I did not enjoy it as much as either of the first two books. I think Nancy and Benedict Freedman like to show women who make impulsive choices and learn about themselves from their experiences, so that was present in all three books; however, the execution of each book was less and less to my taste and I have less and less confidence in the main characters actually learning anything. It was a disappointment. 2 stars
Life’s Too Short - This is the final book in The Friend Zone series by Abby Jimenez, and it is my least favorite of the three. It was supposed to be a buddy read, but once I start a book, I usually keep going with it, so I think I finished it first again. I think the book had a lot of potential in the beginning, which it did not live up to in the end, in my opinion. I understand the ending, but I wanted more. 3 stars
Blood Promise - This is the next book in the Vampire Academy series, and it is set mostly in Siberia. In my opinion, this one was the weakest in the series so far. 2 stars
Currently reading:
The Pecan Man - The audio on this book is so good. I'm supposedly buddy reading this book also, but it's short and going to be finished soon. I'm not sure what makes this book so special, but I'm really enjoying it.
Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking - I've been reading this book for awhile, in fits and starts. I love it when I'm reading it, but I'm not reaching for it when I've set it aside. I think it is because the chapters are so long. I do like it. :-)
Goals -
1. One Tome a Month - The Fires of Heaven
2. Finish One Series a Month - Kathy Little Bird &Life’s Too Short
3. Finish One Book from Shelves a Month - I need to finish Blink!
4. Made progress on GRC Awards - The Third Gilmore Girl and the next books in The Wheel of Time and Vampire Academy series

It's a great audio; I always like it when the audio doesn't sound narrated, but just what a person might say. If that makes any sense.

I read a book of his in 2019, and then another in 2021, and 2023. It appears that I'm on a every other year trend. :-) :-) :-)
My favorite so far is Outliers: The Story of Success, followed by The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know was the first book I read, and perhaps my least favorite of the three, although it was worth reading. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking will probably fall in the middle somewhere. I better start thinking about which book of his I'll read in 2027. :-)

Yes! I think The Third Gilmore Girl will likely win my Most Surprising Award this month, I learned so much and connected a few dots by reading it. :-)
I've read a couple of Malcolm Gladwell's, I think. He's kind of interesting. You've had a great month so far.

Thanks, Bill. I didn't realize he is Canadian at first until I read Outliers. I don't agree with everything, but he has some interesting ideas.

Enjoy the rest of your month!

Enjoy the rest of your month!."
Thanks Patricia! I liked Life's Too Short, but not as much as the other two books in the series. It was an enjoyable read, but I did absolutely feel the ending could have been better. It will be interesting to see what you think. I hope you love it and enjoy the rest of your month too!!

The Pecan Man - This is a book that will stay with me for a long time. It's about a small town in Florida set in 1976. The son of the police chief dies. And this is the story of what happened and how it happened. The audiobook was great. I'm hoping to read the sequel soon. 4 stars
Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking - Why did I wait so long to read this one? It is about how we think and whether and when it benefits us to make a snap decision or to think longer. I thought it was an intriguing concept, but that was a snap decision and now that I've thought about it longer, I think the theory needs to be fleshed out more. :-) I liked it. 4 stars
The Marriage Act - Book #2 in the Dark Futures series, which isn't really a series and could probably be read in any order, but I am a completist. In this book, the Sanctity of Marriage Act has passed in the UK, and people are heavily incentivized to join in a "smart marriage." This is a book by John Marrs, so of course everything works out great. I will say that this book is highly improbable, I hated all of the characters and yet I could not put it down. 3 stars
Liar's Poker - I might be the last accountant to read this book - it was so popular back when it was published in 1989 and seems to have stood the test of time. The book is about Michael Lewis's experiences working for Salomon Brothers, an investment banking firm that was eventually acquired by Citigroup. The 1980s was certainly a wild time and the sales stories were a wild ride. 3 stars
Amari and the Despicable Wonders - This was going to be the third and last book in the Supernatural Investigations series. I hadn't really enjoyed the last book in the series, but this book would finish out the series...so...I decided to finish out the series. Imagine my surprise when it turns out the author is planning to write two more books and...I was happy about it. Not that there weren't quibbles with the plot and the character depictions, but it did not end on a cliffhanger and made me eager to continue the series. 3 stars
Rebel Witch - I was so pleasantly surprised with Heartless Hunter that I read in February, I immediately put the sequel in the duology on hold, and I was excited to read it. I liked the sequel. It was fairly predictable, but if I have to choose between having a book that is predictable versus a book that is unexpected, but some things don't make sense, I will pick the predictable book any day. I thought the book could have used a better editor. Some of the transitions between events and chapters was a little jarring. Leave the extra words in. It will read easier and it will count as a tome. :-) 3 stars
Currently reading:
Cujo - I've never read it before. I've never seen the movie. So far, I like it. I'm 10% in, so I won't get it read tomorrow.
Seven Events That Made America America: And Proved That the Founding Fathers Were Right All Along - I'm not feeling this book right now. I might pick up another book and see if I can get back into the mood for this one.
Goals -
1. One Tome a Month - TWO! The Fires of Heaven and Blood Promise
2. Finish One Series a Month - FOUR!!!! Kathy Little Bird, Life’s Too Short, Amari and the Despicable Wonders (for now...new books coming) & Rebel Witch
3. Finish One Book from Shelves a Month - Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking
4. Made progress on GRC Awards - The Third Gilmore Girl and the next books in The Wheel of Time and Vampire Academy series
Best book: The Pecan Man
Least Favorite book: Kathy Little Bird
Biggest Surprise: The Third Gilmore Girl
Greatest Accomplishment: I finished four series this month! And read three books from my 2024 list. I love making progress!!!

The Secret Adversary - An Agatha Christie mystery about two friends who decide to start a business together and end up in a series of crazy adventures. I was very entertained. 3 stars
Frostbite - The second book in the Vampire Academy series. A massive attack has put the academy on high alert, and we are introduced to Rose's mother. There are two types of people reading this series, those that prefer the first book and those that prefer the second book. I think I'm in the second book camp. 3 stars
The Great Divide - I loved this historical fiction book about the people of Panama and the people who worked on the Panama Canal. It was a portrait of a variety of people who came together for a variety of reasons and was heavily character focused. For me, it was a hit, and a nice surprise read for the year. 4 stars
The God of the Woods - This book was about a family that owns a camp and all the people that work there. A child goes missing, the sister to another child who went missing 14 years ago. I loved the journey, but not the ending. 3 stars
Matilda - I'm pretty sure I read this one too late, it should have been read when I was younger. It didn't work for me. 2 stars
The Women - A historical fiction book about the women who served as nurses in Vietnam. I enjoyed the concept quite a lot. It made me want to read more true stories about these women who served, but some of the story was a little soap operatic for my taste. 3 stars
Smoke Screen - A mystery about a woman reporter who wakes up in bed next to an acquaintance, a dead police detective. She has no memory of how she got there, or how her friend ended up dead. I was entertained but not attached to this book. I could set it down easily and go on to do other things. 3 stars

The Overnight Guest - A thriller/mystery about a true crime writer who is writing her book in the same town where an incident occurred many years before.
Imperfect Bliss - This is supposed to be Pride & Prejudice, but it is basically just tedious.
Goals -
1. One Tome a Month - TWO! Daughters of Lancaster County and The Dragon Reborn! I did start one last month, but still...this is awesome!
2. Finish One Series a Month - TWO! Daughters of Lancaster County and Glinda of Oz
3. Finish One Book from Shelves a Month - THREE!
Daughters of Lancaster County, Shattered: Struck Down, but not Destroyed and Smoke Screen! Don't worry, my shelves are still quite full.
4. Made progress on GRC Awards - THREE! The Wedding People, The God of the Woods, and The Women. I also made some progress in The Wheel of Time series by reading The Dragon Reborn and Vampire Academy by reading Frostbite.
Best book: Heartless Hunter
Worst book: Matilda didn't work for me
Biggest Surprise: Heartless Hunter, I did not expect to like the book
Greatest accomplishment: I think reading three large books from my shelves was probably the best. I cannot remember the last time I cleared that many books from my shelves in a month.
