Books Read: 8 books so far this month. 2,620 Pages.
Books from Filling in the Gaps: 7/100; 2022 Books 0/1, 2023 Books 0/5, 2024 Books 1/14, 2025 books 6/80
Books from 12+4 Challenge: 3/16
Recently finished:
Swan Song - The conclusion to the Nantucket series. I really enjoyed it. This is the last of Hilderbrand novels set in Nantucket, but I am here for her writing a thriller with her daughter set in New England. There was a thriller vibe to this book too, and I think that's what made me like it so much. 3 stars
Finding Dorothy - Historical fiction based on Maud Baum, the wife to L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This book was buddy read by a couple of us, and so far, everyone liked the book. She had a very interesting life. 4 stars
Funny Story - This is not my favorite book by Emily Henry, but not my least favorite book either. I am glad I read it, and look forward to reading more of her books. 3 stars
The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore - I would have never read this book except that it won a GRC Award. That would have been a mistake. I learned quite a bit in this nonfiction book about the history of bookshops, and why they are so important. 3 stars
Mornings on Horseback - This is a biography by David McCullough about Teddy Roosevelt's early years. I found it very interesting. It did take me a really long time to read this book, but it was worth it. 4 stars
Vampire Academy - Well. This book hasn't aged too well. Or I'm too old to appreciate all of the school shenanigans. I don't remember high school ever being like this - thankfully. Anyway, despite the fact that I disliked the characters, and that I do not generally gravitate to vampire novels (I've been reading a lot of them lately to catch up on the GRC Awards that I did not read 15 years ago...) the world that was developed was intriguing, and I'm invested enough to keep going. 3 stars
The Meeting - When someone says "Oh! You have to read this side story! It adds so much," I'm here to say that no, you definitely do not need to read this one. In fact, you may like certain characters better if you do not read it. 2 stars
The Magic of Oz - This was a good one. I enjoyed it and am sad that there is only one left to read! 4 stars
Currently reading:
The Great Hunt - Book 2 in the Wheel of Time Series. This will count for my Tome of the Month - it is 705 pages. I'm happy to get back into this series though.
The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak, and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War - I'm about 90% through this one, and I like it, but I do not love it. It is not the best book I've ever read by Larson. The bar is high with Larson, I typically really enjoy his books.
Whatever the Hell You Want: An Escape Plan to Break Out of Life's Little Boxes and Live Free from Expectations - I'm not usually much for self help books, but I know the authors and they gave me the book for Christmas, so I'm reading it. I think it could be super helpful and empowering for people who are encumbered with a lot of expectations.
Goals -
1. One Tome a Month - The Great Hunt in progress
2. Finish One Series a Month - Swan Song
3. Finish One Book from Shelves a Month - Mornings on Horseback
4. Made progress on GRC Awards - Funny Story, The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore, Vampire Academy to get to the Award book in the series, and The Great Hunt.

I hope you can get to it some day too, Patricia. I found it very interesting. I have a book about Alice Roosevelt on my book shelves, but I even want to read more books about Teddy. This book handles his early life with a long epilogue and I want to know more.
Kudos on your progress! Woot!
I read Vampire Academy a few years ago (??), and it was not memorable for me. I was hoping for something else. All of the kids got on every nerve I had. *sigh*
Edit: I looked at my review and it looks like something changed and I ended up liking the book later on. I still don't remember it.

Alondra, I agree about the kids getting on every nerve. I hated the entitled kids playing games and intentionally hurting one another to get ahead. There was a whole "mean girls" vibe to this thing that was immature and focused on revenge and ruining other people that had not been my high school experience. I hated that aspect of it. I did enjoy the world building and I'm hopeful the next books are more about that and less about spoiled rich kids trying to destroy one another.
You're off to a great start, Lea and quite a nice mixture of genres. Good luck with the rest of January.

Thanks, Bill. January is always so fun, since I'm working a new list that has a lot of new options on it! Happy reading!

The Demon of Unrest - sad to hear is not amazing, I usually like his books.
Mornings on Horseback - glad to hear you've enjoyed it. I'll get to it someday.
Finish One Series a Month - wow! that's ambitious. I'm trying to read at least one of the books in an ongoing series a month. With so many of them, not sure if I will finish any this year, unless I focus on only a few of them. Maybe that's the secret ;-)

Don't let me turn you from reading The Demon of Unrest, there are many people that love it. I'm still really enjoying it, I cannot see it earning less than 3 stars. However, it is a "put-downable" book for me, probably because I think that it jumps around a lot.
Last year, I finished 40 series, but I also started 20!
2023, finished 22 series, but only started 7 series.
2022, finished 29 series, started 13 series.
2021 finished 37 series, started 21 series.
I do count series as completed when I read the last book that is available to me, so many series get completed multiple times, if a new book comes out every year.
For example, in 2024, I marked Empyrean as completed, as I had read both books that had been published thus far. It remains completed right now. However, Onyx Storm is coming out 1/21, so then, the series won't be completed anymore. If I get a chance to read it in 2025, that series will also count as a completed series in 2025.
So basically, it looks like I'm making a lot of progress, but I'm not. I've found that to "tread water" and have a series to finish every month, about half of the books I read have to be series books. Maybe it could be less, if I stopped starting new series, but when I tried to do that, I was grumpy, so that was abandoned. :-)
Everyone has to figure out their own way to manage the series, and my way will not work for very many people, but it works for me!
Happy reading!!

Yes, agreed. Like I said, in my review, it seems like it turned around for me. Of course, that means that I would have to reread it. I don't think just reading a synopsis will help. 🤔

Well...one option for you may be the graphic novel. It did not work for me, but I was trying to read the graphic novel before I read the book, and there was a ton of stuff I missed. :-)
Here's what happened to me. In 2010, Spirit Bound won the GRC Award, and in 2011, Vampire Academy won the GRC Award for graphic novels. I decided, maybe some time in 2015 or 2016 to read all the GRC Award winners. In 2020, I picked up the graphic novel first, figuring that if I read that in that medium, I might be able to skip the first book and still get to book 5 or whatever Spirit Bound is. I couldn't do it, because I didn't have the background to understand what was going on. I really didn't enjoy the graphic novel and waited another five years to start the series.
But, the graphic novel may be more helpful for you, since you already read the book.
However, that said, this does sound like a series you may be able to safely skip. There are so many other really great books to read instead of re-reading a book of a series you may or may not like. Good luck! :-)

The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak, and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War - This is a nonfiction book about the start of the Civil War. It starts before the election of Lincoln and describes a deeply divided country and the succession movement. Larson is one of my favorite authors and he uses a variety of source material to explain his points, and while I appreciated the different viewpoints, I felt like it jumped around a lot and was not as cohesive as I would have hoped. I still enjoyed the book. 3 stars
Whatever the Hell You Want: An Escape Plan to Break Out of Life's Little Boxes and Live Free from Expectations - I think this book could be super helpful and empowering for those who are encumbered with a lot of expectations and not living the life they dreamed about. However, that's not where I am in my life, so I didn't get as much out of it as others may. 3 stars
Kisses from Hell - A compilation that includes a short story from the Vampire Academy series, a prequel of sorts. It was better than the other tweener I read, but still quite forgettable. 2 stars
James - This is a retelling of Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from the perspective of Jim. It is definitely worth reading. Everett really turned the story into something else entirely and I really enjoyed the depiction of Jim for most of the book. I have some quibbles of course (view spoiler) but overall I loved the book. 4 stars
The Great Hunt - The second book in the Wheel of Time series, which is a truly epic fantasy series. This book deals with some of the characters going on a quest to retrieve the Horn of Valere and other characters going to the White Tower to learn Aes Sadai ways. The ending was pretty great, and I enjoyed this one as much as the first one in the series. I am looking forward to reading the next one, but each book is over 700 pages, so it all takes so much time. 3 stars
The Art of War - This is a favorite book of many I know, so I finally decided to read it. It wasn't a favorite of mine, but I am glad I read it. I think it could be summarized as how to be as deceptive as possible, and have a strategy for everything. Some very memorable comments, but overall, a lot of this has been said again. 3 stars
Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop - This is a very character driven book about what success is, and what makes a community. It was good, without being great, for me. I didn't connect to many of the characters, which doesn't help in character driven books. 3 stars
Somewhere Beyond the Sea - I wrote a letter to Klune in my Annual Reading Challenge, but to summarize, I thought this book was OK. The feeling I got from The House in the Cerulean Sea was so warm, so cozy, so inviting. However, I did not revisit that place reading the sequel. I read books to either be taught something or to be entertained. This book tried to teach me something, but I already knew it. It failed to entertain me, because the plot was a repeat The House in the Cerulean Sea without all the warmth and positive feelings. I wish I'd just re-read that book, instead. 2 stars
Currently reading:
The Wedding People - I just started. This book is way more serious than I thought.
Daughters of Lancaster County - Amish fiction! A gift that someone gave me almost 15 years ago that I never read! I'm going to get this chunkster off my shelf - make way for more books. I'm about halfway through. Yes, I have some quibbles.
Goals -
1. One Tome a Month - TWO! The Great Hunt and The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak, and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War. I also started Daughters of Lancaster County which will count for next month!! :-)
2. Finish One Series a Month - TWO! Swan Song and Somewhere Beyond the Sea
3. Finish One Book from Shelves a Month - Mornings on Horseback and I started on Daughters of Lancaster County!
4. Made progress on GRC Awards - Funny Story, The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore, Vampire Academy, The Meeting and Kisses from Hell to get to the Award book in the series, and The Great Hunt. Also Somewhere Beyond the Sea.
Book of the month: James
Worst book: The Meeting was so unnecessary
Biggest Surprise: so disappointed in Somewhere Beyond the Sea
Greatest accomplishment: 16 books, 2 series completed, 1 book from my shelves read, lots of GRC Award progress, 2 tomes...what do I pick?

My book club will read James later in the year, so I'm saving it for that. Glad to hear it's a good one.
I 100% agree with you on Somewhere Beyond the Sea, disappointing.
Everybody seems to be reading The Wedding People, I can't wait to see what you think of it. It's not on my TBR (yet). Happy reading in Feb!

Ioana, James made me want to re-read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I hope you like it also. I also feel like The Demon of Unrest will be good for you. I just wish it was as good as some of his other books - Larson is such a talented author. I'm sorry that you agree with me on Somewhere Beyond the Sea. I really wanted to like it better, and I feel somewhat guilty not enjoying it knowing which way the wind is blowing these days, but it was important to acknowledge my thoughts and feelings after reading the book. I might also have some unpopular thoughts about The Wedding People. I'm about 70% in right now and I'm really not sure how I'm going to rate this one. Usually by this point, I would have a general idea how it is going to go, but right now, I'm not sure.

Happy Reading!"
I'm glad you finally got Finding Dorothy, and I look forward to hearing what your thoughts are as you read the book. I actually didn't know too much about James coming in to read it, I hadn't followed the hype. I'm sure that helped with my appreciation of the book. Did it make you want to re-read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn? I really wanted to re-read it again, I had forgotten some pieces to it.
You had an excellent month, Lea. And such variety in your selections. Good luck with all of your selections. I always enjoy your thoughts on the books.

Thanks, Bill. I feel the same about your thoughts on your books. So many great books that I might have not picked up so quickly without seeing your reviews. :-)

Thanks, Kristen. I received that book as a gift last year and it looks really good. I am looking forward to reading it! I haven't read anything by Gaynor before, but I've heard such good things.

Noted, and sounds like a plan.
Even though I don't mind DNF'ing; I do feel like i am missing out on something. So many people loved it and i'm just like, "Meh" or don't continue the series. *sigh*

I know! Because I'm such a moody reader, sometimes I will read a sequel and realize that I either judged the first book too harshly or I've settled in and know what to expect. One way or the other I'm often glad I kept going. For example, what you're reading now, Wolf Hall, was a series that I thought to abandon and got better and better for me.
We'll see. :-) So many great series out there!

Maybe not; because books can make first impressions too and if they aren't up to par, then they just aren't. As a reader, we have the right to be tough on a book. We are readers; here us roar!
I'm actually enjoying Wolf Hall, which is surprising in a way. I want to finish this week; but that seems daunting, maybe next week?

Great! I just checked, my The God of the Woods will be available soon, so I'll probably delay it a week and I'll start then. Which is perfect timing, I'll be done with my current read by then.

So happy to hear that you are enjoying Wolf Hall. I will look forward to reading your review. I enjoyed the next two books even more than Wolf Hall, so I hope you have a similar experience. :-)
And I love what you wrote about us having the right to be tough on a book. Rawaaaa Rawaaa! (That's me roaring!)

Sounds like a plan. I'm looking forward to reading them both!

That is who the write for, no?? The readers. So, that is our right to judge. LOL

You're so right. Of course, sometimes I think some of the authors forget who their audience is. Her honor Judge Alondra has spoken. :-)

The Wedding People - A GRC Award winner.
This is one of those stories about a wedding going wrong. It is also a story about the unpredictability of life, big life changes, and unexpected friendships. Sometimes you have to get lost before you can be found. I was both annoyed by all the characters in this book and charmed by them. I did have some issues here and there. I'd recommend it, but it was still 3 stars for me.
The Friend Zone - This was my first book by Abby Jimenez, and we read it as a Buddy Read. Quite a few of us are going to read the sequel, The Happy Ever After Playlist soon as well. So, I liked the book, but it did deal kind of heavily with a trope that I don't enjoy as much - people withholding key information from each other. I just wanted to yell, "Why don't you people just talk to each other?" during every scene. That said, the banter was great, it was a dual point of view story, so of course the reader knew more than characters, so I could somewhat forgive the lack of information thing. I liked it and can't wait to read the next one. 3 stars.
Daughters of Lancaster County - This is my first Amish fiction of the year. This fat book has sat on my shelves collecting dust since my MIL gave me the book in 2011. It was time to get it read. It is a compilation of three books, so it counts as a tome, a series start and finish, and one from the shelves. It deals with a child who is kidnapped and covers about 20 years. I enjoyed reading it all together. There were some continuity issues and things that seemed farfetched, but overall, I was entertained and liked the book. 2 stars.
Heartless Hunter - Wow. I loved this book. It is a YA Fantasy novel and I thought it was really good. The story has been told before, but I loved the way it was told and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series - it is due out next week. There are witches and there are witch hunters and politics and power. This was my first book by Kristen Ciccarelli and I'm a fan of her now too. 4 stars
Shattered: Struck Down, but not Destroyed - Also from my shelves, a nonfiction book about a baseball pitcher who found faith and became a radio host in our area. I liked the book, but had some quibbles. 3 stars
Glinda of Oz - The last book in the Wizard of Oz series. I'm sad that it is over. 3 stars
The Dragon Reborn - This is the third book in the Wheel of Time Series. I enjoyed it, but maybe not as much as the other two books, because I feel like there's a little formula going on here. That said, I love reading these long deep fantasy novels, and I'm looking forward to continuing the series. 3 stars.
Currently reading:
The Secret Adversary - First book in the Tommy & Tuppence Mystery series by Agatha Christie. :-)
Frostbite - Second book in the Vampire Academy series.
The Great Divide - A historical fiction book about the Panama Canal. This book was my library's mystery date choice - they wrap up books in Valentine paper with a little information about it and you don't know what you're getting. I have never done it before. So far, it has been a good pick and a book that was already on my TBR. :-)
Goals -
1. One Tome a Month - TWO! Daughters of Lancaster County and The Dragon Reborn! I did start one last month, but still...this is awesome!
2. Finish One Series a Month - TWO! Daughters of Lancaster County and Glinda of Oz
3. Finish One Book from Shelves a Month - TWO!
Daughters of Lancaster County and Shattered: Struck Down, but not Destroyed
4. Made progress on GRC Awards - At least I read The Wedding People and made some progress in The Wheel of Time series by reading The Dragon Reborn

BUT I don't see The God of the Woods in your currently reading section. I just finished it now, it's good. Hope you get to it before I forget all the details :-)

Ooh, I just got it yesterday or the day before? I sent you a message to see if you had it and started already. Since I didn't hear, I started on something else, but I can start it right now. :-) I can probably finish it by next week and we can talk about it then.
Heartless Hunter looks interesting. I hope you enjoy Tommy and Tuppence. It's nice and fluffy as I recall. There is a fun TV series based on the books too, starring David Walliams and ...... I can't remember.. lol.

BUT I don't see The God of the Woods in your currently reading section. I just finished it now, it's good. Hope..."
I hate GR for stopping the email notifications...I hope you'll like The God of the Woods, I did.

I really enjoyed The Secret Adversary. Next year, I'm going to focus on Christie's books. They are so much fun. I'll have to check out the TV series, too. My husband might enjoy that more! :-)

I got about one hour into the book and was not loving it, so I restarted it, and now I'm liking it better. There was a lot going on last week and my head wasn't in the right spot, and I was confusing characters, but now I've caught up and passed where I was before, and it's good, so hopefully, I can keep going. :-)

Patricia, I'm about 70% in to The Great Divide. It's the first book I've read by Cristina Henríquez and I like it so far. It is a bunch of different character studies, and some of the characters are more interesting to me than others, but overall, I'm really glad I got this book. :-)

I had a hard time in the beginning with all the characters. Thankfully, it clears up later in the book.

It's impossible. I don't know how someone can pick ten books and read them in order. I am continuously diverted to other books. It's like I have a short attention span and am attracted to any bright shiny object. :-)
