Kat Just finished Souls of Astraeus, and here's my review. Nice space romp, with a cool cliffhanger at the end, already waiting for the sequel.

I had fully intended on starting The Slow Regard of Silent Things but on one of my leisurely strolls through the library I ran across Paladin of Souls by Lois McMaster Bujold. I have seen this book several times and always went past it. So, I thought, “not this time, I’m going to give it a chance” plus it was on the bookshelf and I wanted to get caught up on some of these. Goodness, this was a really good story. My only criticism was the fact that a “demon god” was portrayed as good. To me having a demon god is somewhat of an oxymoron. They are exact opposites. Other than that this was a really good book. Now maybe I can get started on the Slow Regard of Silent Things.

Paladin of Souls is a great read, and as I remember it, The Curse of Chalion is even better. Definitely worth a look if you haven't already read it.

I'm hoping to finish a couple of books this weekend, and then it's on to Starborn, which I've seen a lot of buzz about recently. I was lucky enough to get an advance copy through Goodreads so I can't wait to start it!

message 60: by Margret (new)

Margret Just finished The Nightingale (WWII Historical Fiction). Such a good heart wrenching book. Very complex characters and so well written.

Next up The Maze Runner and Sword of Shannara, then I'm starting the Fionavar Tapestry and next months BOTM picks

Shadowdenizen | 193 comments
then I'm starting the Fionavar Tapestry and next months BOTM picks
The series that introduced me to Guy Gavriel Kay WAY back when! (Yes, I'm old.) :)

I'm due for a re-read of these, to see how they hold up currently to my memory of them.

Shadowdenizen | 193 comments WHile I always have a number of books "in-progress", this month, I'm focused on completing the "Great Way" series by Harry Connolly, and the "Children of Chaos" series by Drew Karpyshyn.

Then, I'll try to finish Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, and Whistling in the Dark.

Honorary mention to Phillip Reeves for his "Larklight" series, a rollicking sci-fi series suitable for all ages.

I have read both and thought they were both excellent but I kind of liked Paladin a tad more. May be because I just read it. To anyone that hasn't read them I would highly recommend them both.

message 65: by Sam (new)

Sam Griffin I just finished traitors blade by Sebastion De Castell, and now im moving on to the black guard by AJ Smith

message 66: by Matt (new)

Matt | 20 comments I've started on Devices and Desires by K. J. Parker. Easy book to get into, hoping the promising start continues.

message 67: by Michele (new)

Michele I just finished Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris of Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood fame. It was...boring, but with potential? Kind of like a pilot episode, with too much character set up and not enough plot. None of the characters really grabbed me, but I'll most likely try the next one, since I liked the Sookie books for silly fun.

I grabbed several books from the library, but haven't made up my mind what's next - probably The Slow Regard of Silent Things.

I'm still not in much of a reading mood lately so I set aside Grace of Kings for now.

There are some excellent books being read here, although I came to a stand still on the Fionavar Tapestry, I've had the final book lined up for a year but can't face it. Loved Tigana and The Lions of Al-Rassan, just glad I'd read them earlier.

I've read four this week, and before anyone tells me off the 5000 word essay is done (I hope). Deadhouse Gates was awesome, although my kindle fire insists it's farmhouse gates! Persuasion entertaining when it finally got moving. Elizabeth Is Missing, very moving and at times funny. Then today I finished Promise of Blood which was also great. Good times.

Sumant | 85 comments Here is my review of 2nd book in mistborn series.

message 70: by Monica (new)

Monica Davis Reading Blood Song which was recommended to me as a "must read for fans of fantasy". Through chapter five, and it's just "okay" for me. I've heard it being compared to The Name of the Wind, but so far, I don't see it.

I've not read it Monica, everyone I know that has, has rated it at least 4 stars. It'll be interesting to see if you change your mind.

I enjoyed Firefight too.

Just finished The Slow Regard of Silent Things. I have to say, you don't have to read the previous two books but it would make some things a little clearer. Overall was a great read. Patrick Rothfuss is a really good author. Next up, Half a King. Need to get this read so I can start Half the World next month.

Shadowdenizen | 193 comments
I refuse to read The Wise Man's Fear until the final book in the trilogy has a release date.
We call that "The Jordan Rule". (TM someone far wittier than me.)

Shadowdenizen | 193 comments
Just finished the Wars of Light and Shadow by Janny Wurts with Initiate's Trial. I'm just woah. Been reading this incredible series straight since Christmas and to say I love it would be an understatement. Complex, deep, mature, humorous and powerfully entertaining.
Missed this from ealier in the thread.
And I totally agree.

This has long been my one of my "Go_to" book reccs for those looking for a more mature fantasy series.

I'd also recommend most anything else by Janny WurtsJanny Wurts, but especially the The Cycle of Fire trilogy.

When I started the trilogy I had no idea that it would take sooooo long to get the final book. Still loved what I have read so far.

Laughing at the Jordan rule. I didn't touch WoT until it had been finished, not as a plan just happen-stance. For me, it would be the GRRM rule, grrrr.

message 81: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Wrapped up Rhialto the Marvellous and am moving on to something brand new: The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu.

message 82: by Tad (new)

Tad (tottman) | 68 comments Right now I'm listening to Star Wars: Darth Plagueis and reading A Crown for Cold Silver.

message 83: by Matt (new)

Matt Goguen Tnkw01 - while i havent read the book, people usually mistake demons for evil. demon is just a term for something without its own physical form by most fantasy definitions. no good or evil involved unless stated by the author.

message 84: by Amy (new)

Amy Sanderson | 129 comments Both The Grace of Kings and A Crown for Cold Silver are high up there on my TBR list so I'd be interested to know what you guys think of them. The latter in particular seems to be getting mixed reviews, although I think saddling any book with the words 'game-changing epic fantasy debut' is always dangerous - readers go in expecting too much and then come away disappointed, hence the poor reviews.

message 85: by Margret (new)

Margret Just finished The Summer Tree (Fionavar Tapestry) very beautiful writing. I think I will enjoy the next two of the series.

And today I get to go pick up the Rithmatist and Half the World at the library today! I may or may not have them done before next month. Pretty excited about both of them. I loved Half a King and I hear the second book is even better!

I loved it! It's YA so it's more on the lines of Hunger games and Snow Like Ashes.

message 88: by TS (new)

TS Chan (tschan) After finishing 2 massive books, The Way of Kings and House of Chains, I went light with The Blood of Olympus (disappointed with the lack of Percy), The Demigod Diaries (great collection of short stories and a Percy POV!) and Half a King.
