Blood Ties
by Jo NesbøBrothers Roy and Carl Opgard are up to no good, as usual, in this Nordic noir.
You can always count on Jo Nesbo for a good story. 3.5 stars

After a LOT of time away due to home issues, I'm finally feeling mentally recharged enough to go back to doing things I enjoy doing, for instance, watching what's happening here. I think I baked enough bread to last a lifetime, but baking in general is my zenspace.
I've read several vintage crime books in the meantime, including one forthcoming from Stark House, The Bus Station Murders / No Pockets in Shrouds (1947/48) by a relatively-unknown author named Louisa Revell. I will say that when I first opened this book, I was beyond surprised to see my own crime fiction blog listed in the introduction. I also read Ghosts of Society (1908) by E. Phillips Oppenheim, about a group of aristocratic thieves who use their proceeds to fund charitable causes, Night at the Mocking Widow by Carter Dickson (aka John Dickson Carr), and Mystery in White by J. Jefferson Farjeon as a nod to the holiday season.
My husband replaced my old kindle with the new colorsoft so I think went through several volumes of downright creepy stories by Reggie Oliver: Masques of Satan: Twelve Tales and a Novella, The Dreams of Cardinal Vittorini, The Complete Symphonies Of Adolf Hitler And Other Strange Stories. His work borders on genius.
No idea what I'll be reading next. But it's nice to be back again.

Now starting DOLPHIN JUNCTION by Mick Herron, a collection of crime fiction short stories published back in 2021. So far there have been no links between the stories and the author's Slough House thriller series.
I loved Donal Ryan's follow-up to his much-awarded The Spinning Heart. In Heart, Be at Peace, he picks up the stories ten years later of the same rural Irish villagers. He deserves his growing reputation.
My review of Heart Be at Peace
We Solve Murders
by Richard OsmanExtremely likeable fun mystery by the author of the Thursday Murder Club series. Same easy-going style, intricate plot construction, amusing dialogue, very likeable characters. I thought the plot and one of the main characters were a bit over the top thus subtracting one star. 4 stars, I did like it a lot.
I'm finishing off the year with
Irish Soda Bread Murder, a novella anthology featuring stories from Carlene O'Connor, Peggy Ehrhart, and Liz Ireland. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Irish author Kevin Barry has sent some wild Irish characters to snowy Montana in the early, untamed American west. The Heart in Winter is funny, tragic, lawless, and full of heart, not only in winter. It is quite a ride!

Sam Wyndham #4. .......... India, 1922. I've been reading the Sam Wyndham series in order and like it a lot. Unfortunately this is by far the weakest entry. The first 2/3rds of the book describe Sam's withdrawal from opium addiction and (in alternating chapters) a case he worked as a young constable in London in 1905 which he didn't solve. Only the final third of the book is an actually interesting mystery which is not enough to make the book worth recommending. 2 stars.
