MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 145 comments Welcome to UNO 2024! There is a LOT going on in this challenge, so we’ve got several informational posts to help us all get started. If you have questions, please just ask.

Rules in a Nutshell
✔ 100 pages (verify 25k words / 3hrs for Children's, Poetry, Plays etc MPG)
✔ rereads OK after 6 months
✔ Letters for cards use title / author name / speaking character name / location
✔ Letters to find E F H I K N O P S T V Z
✔ Numbers in the title of the book or the number in a series of books

For book titles starting with an article (A/An/The), the article can be ignored or used. So The Hiding Place, for example, could be used as title starting with T or H

Official All About Uno Rules and Information Thread

Expectations
✔ Check in once a week on the team thread, so that we know you are actively participating, even if you have not completed a book.
✔ Only books started after the challenge starts can count for this challenge.-All finished books must be marked as read and must be on your Uno shelf.
✔ Friend all the members of the team or make your shelves public so that your captains (MN Lisa and Kirsten) can verify your completions and your team members can find Reverse books.

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 145 comments Tracking Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

I am a spreadsheet fanatic. I get a bit obsessive. Feel free to complete the spreadsheet as you are comfortable. I will be keeping it up to date with posts, so if you don't like spreadsheets, selection and completion posts in the thread are just fine. You do NOT need to do completion posts if you are using the spreadsheet, and you do NOT need to use the spreadsheet if you are doing completion posts.

Fill out the (Month) Books with the book information available. Columns B-D (card, hand, and book) and then F-AE (name, completion date, pages, and then any of the criteria the book fits).
Column A is for Captains after we have confirmed the book is on the shelf. Column E is hidden as it has a formula in it. Column AF and after will help determine which cards are available to be used.

The (Month) Hands sheet is where the books are assigned to the actual hands by using the dropdown list in Column B. I have formulas set up to pull the information from the (Month) Books and populate the data in there and help the captains to complete the official spreadsheet at the end of each round.

Fill this out as you are comfortable, but know that we may move books around as needed, especially towards the end of the round to maximize the points we get.

I want people to read and have fun as a group. The spreadsheet relaxes me at the end of a long workday. It does....I promise.

The rows for main SS, Card, and Hand will only be used by Kirsten and me, but you will fill out the book, the date read, and anywhere the book could possibly fit. Besides color cards, don't worry about planning for a specific card! Give us all the options by selecting a "how" it fits and filling out the reason and Kirsten and I will move them around to make sure everyone's books count! For "reverse" the reason just has to be the name of the team member who read it.

The only cards we want to make sure we plan out beforehand are the color cards so those will be at the top of each spreadsheet to make it easier to see that we've completed them!

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 145 comments I prefer not to claim cards except for color cards. If you have a color card that you want to claim please post so we can make sure all our color cards are covered. Color cards should take priority. If you claim a color card, please try to finish that book quickly so we aren't left scrambling at the end of the month! All other cards will not be claimed as books will often be moved around to make everything fit.

If you are not able to use the spreadsheet, we will need the following information posted in our thread to be moved into the planning spreadsheet.
Sample Completion Post
CARD:
HAND:
BOOK:
PAGES:
COMPLETION DATE:
HOW IT FITS (every option, please):
When you are posting your completion post please post all cards the book works for.

You do not need to post a completion post in this thread if you are able to add to the spreadsheet on your own - this is only if you do not want to or can’t use the spreadsheet.

For the color covers please be aware that different editions have different color covers and you will need to post the color cover that you read. If the Italian cover is yellow, you need to read the book in Italian to count it!

Practical Colour Cover Guide
The general agreement on colours is that
✔ We use our eyes and common sense
✔ If you are uncertain about the colour percentage, you can use tineye (https://labs.tineye.com/color/) to verify if it's over 50% (avoid using TinEye to figure out what colour it is–it’s better for us to determine that ourselves)
✔ When in doubt whether a cover is one colour or another, please consult us. We may take this to the Captains' group for a final decision.

March Mini

Part One
This is your cocktail menu. To be able to drink these, you will need to perform two tasks per cocktail.

Daryl van Horne's Bloody Mary
- Read a book with a white cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

President Snow's White Negroni
- Read a book with white writing on the cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Mayday's Tuxedo
- Read a book with a yellow cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Agent Smith' Margerita
- Read a book with yellow writing on the cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Scar's Lion Tail
- Read a book with an orange cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Annie Wilkes' Hanky Panky
- Read a book with orange writing on the cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Pennywise's Fluffy Critter
- Read a book with a red cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Hannibal Lecter's Red Wine Spritzer
- Read a book with red writing on the cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Mean Girls' Stiletto
- Read a book with a pink cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Prince Septimus' Last Word
- Read a book with pink writing on the cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Jack Sparrow's Sea Breeze
- Read a book with a turquoise cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Wicked Witch of the West's Brass Monkey
- Read a book with a green cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail

Voldemort's Snakebite
- Read a book with green writing on the cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail - for example: the book shows a snake on the cover, a character is bitten by something (or someone)...

Phantom of the Opera's Love Potion
- Read a book with a black cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail - for example: the book is about love, the cover shows a potion...

Patrick Bateman's Death in the Afternoon
- Read a book with black writing on the cover.
- Read a book that relates to the cocktail - for example: someone dies, the word "afternoon" is in the book or series title...

Cover colours need to be >50%. The examples we have give are just that, examples and you do not need to read something from the examples given. Feel free to get creative! The book needs to make sense for each cocktail but for the rest, you are given free hand to make your books fit.

Every book read is worth 10 points.
Each book can be used for one task only.
If your team reads for all 30 tasks, you get 30 points as bonus.

Part Two

Here is your chance to shine (again), now that you've drunken a multitude of cocktails: create your own cocktails!

You can use anywhere between two and six elements from your books to create a name for your cocktail along the lines of what the mods have done for the team names.

These are the elements you can choose to use from your books - any combination of these works:
- book title
- series title
- author name
- item on cover
- cover colour (no matter how much of it is found on the cover as long as one can actually detect it with the naked eye)
- name from the story (any character or named creature, you could even use the cat's name if you like)
- setting of the story (can be the entire setting, can be the setting of a single scene, whatever works for your creation)

The names of your cocktails do not have to be villain/troublemaker inspired. You could create a Miss Piggy's Pink Umbrella if you wanted. Or a Little Miss Sunshine's Bellini.

Every book read is worth 10 points.
Each book can only be used once for the mini challenge.
No bonus points for completing this part as it is supposed to be fun. No pressure.

Wild Draw 4 cards are no longer in play. We get OVERLOAD cards instead!

Overload cards are also cover color cards, but they are these colors only: purple, pink, orange, brown, grey, white, black. We can only use each overload card once. We don't need any letters or numbers, just the cover. Each overload card is worth 30 points. Same color cover rules apply: covers must be at least 50% colored and when there's a dispute over colors, the captain's group decides.

When you claim a color card or overload card (either on the planning sheet or in a completion post), I'll track it on the announcement post (ETA: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...)

Kirsten | 268 comments If you haven't played before, welcome! If you have, welcome back and to our team!

UNO is a fun team challenge; some of it is luck (just like any card game, we can only play the hands we’re dealt) and some of it is strategy. But mostly it’s a good way for us to read books we might not otherwise, clean out our TBRs, have some conversations about what we’re reading, and make some new friends. Lisa is one of my best GR buddies, and that’s because of challenges like this one.

Please take a moment to check in (all team members need to check in by 25 January), share your UNO shelf, and let us know a little about you.

I’m Kirsten, a theatre professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have an awesome teenage daughter (and her daddy’s pretty cool, too). I read about 60% MM romance, 20% mystery/thriller, and 20% literary fiction. My favorite genres are MM historical and anything with hockey. I also read quite a bit of fan fiction.

How about you? Who are you? What do you like to read? What are you most looking forward to in this challenge?

message 12: by MN Lisa (new)

MN Lisa (lisa713mn) | 145 comments Hello Team! I’m Lisa and I’m from, you guessed it, Minnesota. I have never played UNO before, but somehow GR Bestie, Kirsten, talked me into not only playing this year, but co-captaining?!? What! I know, but they promise me that this will be fun and I don’t know about you, but I go with the general, I just don’t want to be last. I’m not super competitive, so I don’t feel a need to win, but I do feel a need to not lose, go figure.

Anyway. I’m Lisa. I work as a Product Manager for an EMT/Firefighter Software Company in Minnesota. I’m married, have one 19 year old daughter and my wonderful mother in on this team, so you better be nice to me. 🤣

I read 98% MM Romance. I like that they do not take a lot of brain power to enjoy. I read just about any genre within that.

Rebecca | 25 comments Hi everyone! This is my first year playing but I’m excited to start!

I’m Becca, I’m from the UK and I live on the south coast. I work for a charity and I’m on the board of another in my spare time. I love reading thrillers and classics, and I’ve recently gotten into fantasy (thanks to Fairyloot) 😊

Leanne | 31 comments Hey there, I'm Leanne. New to GR (joined November 10). Still getting used to the lingo and how all this fits together. It's been exciting to see that GR includes people around the world. Did not know GR was as big as it is. I read mostly crime, mystery, thrillers to some extent, and historical fiction. Not so big on nonfiction, or romance. I like starting a series and reading one after the other till I get through them all. Something I think I'll have to get away from for a while trying to meet all the tasks I have to do. Oh and I am MN-Lisa's mother, so if I do something wrong, blame her. She's my tutor. I'm amazed and thankful at how well she knows the ropes. So thank you all for allowing me to be a part of this team, I'll do my best to keep up.

I will read almost anything but my favorites are fantasy, crime/mystery, and historical fiction. I’ve played Uno quite a few times before as a Captain and Co-Captain but with my daughter about to turn 1 I figured it would be best to play with no stress this time 😆

I can take either the Skip Green or the 0 Green. I have a book that will fit for either. When I get on the computer tomorrow I’ll claim on the spreadsheet and I’ll link my Uno shelf.

The Red 3 was claimed above by Rebecca. That book works for a lot of things, but we also have Four WD4 that allows us to duplicate our colored cards.

Taylor (tjm0231) | 9 comments Hello everyone, I’m Taylor from Australia and this is my first time playing UNO. It sounds like heaps of fun and I hope to learn more about it as I go. I love to read fantasy and mystery plus a bit of romance. Can’t wait to play! :)
