I feel like "Walk Like an Egyptian" may be my stumbling block. I will be stalking everyone's lists for suggestion on that category.
Badseedgirl wrote: "I feel like "Walk Like an Egyptian" may be my stumbling block. I will be stalking everyone's lists for suggestion on that category."@Badseedgirl - In the horror anthology Collage Macabre: An Exhibition of Art Horror the first story is about a mummy unrolling, and it's a very good story too. I don't know if one story is enough but the whole anthology is worthwhile.
The problem is, I've already read it and I too am looking for further Egypt/Mummy themed books.
I read a really good mummy story last year. David Case's The Third Grave, published in 1981. I really enjoyed his writing style and will need to look to see if he has anything else to offer in mummy stories.
I think my difficult category will be the "whatever scares you the most," because frankly, I'm not quite sure what "the most' is.
More mummy books:The Mummy by Anne Rice
Imprisoned with the Pharoahs by H.P. Lovecraft
Wizard of the Pigeons by Megan Lindholm
The Jewel of Seven Stars by Bram Stoker
The Long Night of the Grave by Charles L. Grant

Good question. I find for myself, that cosmic horror is something that scares me most, the fear of the unknown. But I know quite a lot of people who are scared of clowns or insects.

:) Ask and you shall receive:
Also, you can check out what other people have put on a "Mummy" shelf. Great way to find books on a particular topic.

Netanella wrote: "I think my difficult category will be the "whatever scares you the most," because frankly, I'm not quite sure what "the most' is."This was actually the easiest category for me. Creepy dolls and ventriloquist dummies. They are just so disturbing to me. Not like Chucky. That is not scary, but like the dummies from the Twilight Zone and the movie Dolls. Those old fashioned ones.
Thank you for all the Mummy recommendations. I will look them over. I know I am going to read Bubba Ho-Tep by Joe R. Lansdale.
I'm in!I overextended myself last year, so I'm starting small and will start with one of each with the hopes of increasing it later in the year. 0/7

Badseedgirl wrote: "I feel like "Walk Like an Egyptian" may be my stumbling block. I will be stalking everyone's lists for suggestion on that category."I struggled with this one too. I'm going to read Lot No. 249 which is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about a revived Egyptian mummy who does bad things. It's also been adapted for TV by the BBC so I'm sure it will show up on streaming somewhere soon which interested me.

Uh quick question, hope I'm not overstepping here or anything like that, but can I add items to my list? Like, I know a couple of songs that could match well with a religious horror story, could I add one of those at the end of my list like an extra?

You're So Vain (vein) - The Gathering 3 stars
Werewolves of London - Beneath the Skin 4 stars
Monster Mash - The Watchers 3 stars
Walk Like an Egyptian - The Heart of the Mummy 5 stars
GhostBusters theme -
Riders on the Storm -
Welcome to My Nightmare - Witch Brew 5 stars
The thing that scares me the most is small, confined spaces, I'm incredibly claustrophobic. I started reading Witch Brew and found some very 'confined' scenes involving a deranged serial killer. hooo boy... are those scenes hard to read and even worse to think about. If if wasn't for the humor in Konrath's Jack Daniels' series, I'd have a hard time reading this.

If anyone is looking for an "Extra" song/Book combo. I decided to add "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" by R.E.M for apocalyptic/post apocalyptic reads. I am also scrounging the lists for other people's extra to add to my own. So if I stole your idea please reciprocate and steal mine!

Welcome to My Nightmare - when I was a kid, camping always terrified me, especially with my brothers filling my head with stories about the Hookman. My read for this one:
Not exactly my nightmare, but so many have a fear of clowns.
Struggling to find Riders on the Storm - meteorological horror one, any suggestions? thank you in advance :)
MM wrote: "Struggling to find Riders on the Storm - meteorological horror one, any suggestions? thank you in advance :)"off the top of my head, I'd say The Hunger, The Terror, Dark Matter: A Ghost Story, Who Goes There?, tho I can only truly vouch for Who Goes There (because I've read it), and maybe The Terror and The Hunger because I'm familiar with the events they're both inspired by, the disaster of the Erebus and the Terror, and the Donner Party, respectively.
Last Year The Lost Cause by Cory Doctorow came out. It is a book set in the near future where climate change is a part of life,I have not read it but I'm considering it. Paolo Bacigalupi does a lot of climate fiction. I'm planning on reading The Water Knife for weather related stories. Hope this helps.
I agree with The Terror by Dan Simmons. Great frozen Arctic terror book.Other suggestions:
They Came with the Storm by Christopher Coleman - strange creatures emerge from a storm. There a few books in the series. It's by an indie author and pretty good.
The Shuddering by Ania Ahlborn - frozen, trapped in a cabin in the woods and surrounded by hungry freaks story - I believe this won the BOTM here a bit ago.
The Final Winter by Iain Rob Wright - Wright is an awesome horror novelist, and I believe this is his first book. good stuff.
I would suggest three by master Stephen King: Storm of the Century and The Shining and The Mist
Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice is set in an isolated Anishinaabe community in the frozen winter.

Our challenges are intended for the calendar year. However, we set them up a few days beforehand, thus the "start date" comes out as whatever date the challenge was established because that's just how Goodreads works. You can start the challenge early if you want, but as the title states, the intent is for the 2024 calendar year.
