Misty | 1489 comments I finished Untamed Shore by Silvia Moreno-Garcia for prompt #28 - A book related to sea. I was not overly impressed. It was okay. I'd like to read another one of her novels.

message 102: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished the third Murderbot Diaries novella: Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells, and I really enjoy this series. Murderbot is a great character.

message 103: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie today. I really enjoy her writing. There is always something in her novels that trouble me though, so her novels never make it to five stars for me. This time it was a weird relationship with a priest, and the book really didn't wrap things up. It was kind of like she just stopped the story. It was kind of strange, but I did really like the book overall - a solid four stars. I plan on reading her other novels.

Misty | 1489 comments I listened to Midnight Son by James Dommek, Jr., and it was pretty interesting. I enjoyed hearing the story. It bugged me how he thought this guy's spirituality could somehow excuse his crime. If Jesus came down and told me to shoot someone, I would still be found guilty in a court of law.

message 105: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury. It's was okay - kind of fun - nothing great. I am glad I read it though.

message 106: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finally got around to reading an Octavia E. Butler book: Parable of the Sower. It was so good. I read that it was supposed to be a trilogy, but she died before writing the third book which is really sad. I am looking forward to reading book 2.

message 107: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I am really enjoying Martha Wells Murderbot Diaries series. I just finished Exit Strategy which is the fourth novella. I just found out that there is a 4.5 - which is kind of weird to have a novella in between novellas - but I can't find it on Audible, and I haven't even been able to find it at the bookstore. Very frustrating!

message 108: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I read Catching the Light by Joy Harjo last night, and it was a really good book. It was a memoir of why she writes. I really enjoyed reading it.

message 109: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2088 comments The Murderbot short story is available free on the website. Here's the link:

message 110: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished Elevation by Stephen King late last night. It was a really good story. Weird, but it's Stephen King, so.... LOL.

message 111: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished Network Effect by Martha Wells - it is a full size Murderbot Diaires novel. I love this series. It's been a tough year, and this series has been a great escape for me. I'm already sad that I'm almost done with it.

message 112: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished reading The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix for book club. I really wanted to like it, but it was very underwhelming. I didn't hate it; it just didn't do it for me. I've heard so much about two of his other novels: The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and How to Sell a Haunted House, so I was really looking forward to it, but it's just not great. It's kind of dumb actually.

message 113: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished Earthlings by Sayaka Murata last night. That was one weird book and not necessarily in a good way. I rounded up to three stars. I enjoyed Convenience Store Woman, but if this had been my first book of hers, I would not have read anymore.

message 114: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri. I didn't realize it was a book of short stories until I got into it. Like most collections, some were better than others, but overall I enjoyed the book.

message 115: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished The Nazi and the Psychiatrist: Hermann Göring, Dr. Douglas M. Kelley, and a Fatal Meeting of Minds at the End of WWII by Jack El-Hai, and it was fascinating. Terrifying, but fascinating. I feel like more people should read this book considering we are teetering on the verge of fascism in the US.

message 116: by Misty (last edited Dec 29, 2024 07:11PM) (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished Grave Secret by Charlaine Harris, and I really enjoyed it. The relationship between the "siblings" is still honestly a little icky, but I still liked the book. I thought this one was the best of the series so far.

Misty | 1489 comments I have had such a good year in books that I have to split my "book count" page into two! Yikes! LOL.

I finished Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist late last night (or should I say early this morning). It is my husband's favorite book series, and after 34 years, I am finally reading it. :) It was pretty good. If it hadn't been for the ridiculous misogyny in the book, it would definitely have been a five star read. Now the hubby is going to be bugging me to finished the series. :)

message 119: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I needed some "comfort" reading today, so I read Blockade Billy by Stephen King. It was a pretty good story, and I really enjoyed it. It helped me keep my mind busy while my son was in surgery today.

message 120: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished Where the Line Bleeds by Jesmyn Ward. I thought it was going to be a five star read, but the ending kind of sucked. I really like her writing though, and I will definitely read more of her work.

message 121: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished the next book in the Cash Blackbear series - Sinister Graves by Marcie R. Rendon. I have heard criticism from others that this book is not as strong as the first two, but I strongly disagree. I love Rendon's look at 1970s culture surrounding the Native American groups living in Minnesota and North Dakota at the time. Cash Blackbear is a fascinating character. I love the sheriff, the dog, and the new characters. I hope she is writing a book 4.

message 122: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished Dust Tracks on a Road by Zora Neale Hurston which is an autobiography written by her. It was fascinating. I loved the history it contained. She was a very interesting character. I admire her.

message 123: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I read The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison for another challenge. I liked it. Her writing style is not my favorite, but I did find the characters in the book interesting, and I love the cultural history.

message 124: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I needed something not depressing, so I read A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab. It was a really fun book, and I am glad I read it. I just be book to on my wish list. Lots of magic and fun characters - I am bugging my husband to read it now. "I am! I am! I'm going to listen to it on my road trip!" LOL. He better.

message 125: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished Refugee by Alan Gratz for a church book club lead by one of our youth. It was a fantastic book. I was listening to the end of it in the car as I was going to pick up my daughter, and I was crying. The stories are heartbreaking and while they are fiction, they are based on real-life stories. I was an enrichment teacher for "at-risk" youth a few summers ago, and I heard stories like this from my kids. The way we treat refugees is deplorable.

message 126: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I am reading the Skyward novellas that take place in between book 2-3. I just finished Sunreach by Brandon Sanderson, and it was really good. I am thoroughly enjoying this series. My husband already read books 3 and 4, but I didn't want to read them until I got through the novellas.

message 127: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished Han Kang's Human Acts, and wow was that a heavy book. It was all about some political violence that happened in May of 1980. I am just about Kang's age, but I grew up in the US, so I did not know anything about the violence. The book is very good, but it is a very hard read. There is a lot of graphic violence in the book. I definitely recommend it if you do not have serious triggers with violence and sexual assault.

message 128: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished the second Skyward Novella by Brandon Sanderson: ReDawn. This series is excellent, and even better, it is an excellent distraction from this very emotional and challenging year. I loved it, and I can't wait to read the third one.

message 129: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments On Juneteenth by Annette Gordon-Reed was recommended by someone on a different group, and it is in the included catalog from Audible right now. It is a very good book. There is a ton of history in the book as well as anecdotes from her own family. I am glad I found this book.

message 130: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished the The Kamogawa Food Detectives by Hisashi Kashiwai this morning. It was weird, but it was a really sweet book that explored the themes of memory and nostalgia associated with food.

message 131: by Misty (last edited Jul 29, 2024 01:28PM) (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished my last ATY52 2024 challenge. For prompt #50 - A book posted in one of the ATY Best Book of the Month threads in 2023 or 2024 - I read Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao. It was fantastic, but I am so ticked! The release date of book 2 got pushed back to December! What?! Rude. They better release it in December because I NEED to read book 2. It was so good.

message 132: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments Stephen King delivers again with Joyland - if it was enough to keep my occupied (sort of) while my son was having a pretty serious and possibly life altering surgery, I would say it earned it's five stars. SK's books often get an emotional response from me, but rarely do I cry at the end. The man is brilliant.

message 133: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished book 6 in the Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells: Fugitive Telemetry. I really like this series. This one wasn't as strong as some of the others, but I still really liked it. I am already sad that there is only one left. I did just find out that there is an Apple TV series, so I am going to check it out.

message 134: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros. It is a good book, but it is a little hard to follow in the beginning because of the skipping around.

message 135: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments Kendra wrote: "The Murderbot short story is available free on the website. Here's the link:

Oh thank you! I missed your message before. I appreciate it!

message 136: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover, and I truly do not understand the hate it gets. I read some of the reviews, and I completely disagree. I don't think she glamorizes abuse. My only issue with her work is the gay friend who is only in one part of the book. If he was a "stereotype" who was in it all the time that would be different, but he is literally in it for that one time, and that's lazy. I'm hoping to go see the movie with my kiddo who got me to read the book before she goes back to college.

message 137: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto. It was a sweet book. I don't have a lot to say about it. It was okay.

message 138: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished the third novella in the Skyward series: Evershore by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson. I am really enjoying this series, and I am excited to get back to the novels.

message 139: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson - the sixth installment and four full-size novel in the Skyward series. This series is really good. I often read other books in between series books, but I had to read this one right after Evershore, and I am now on the last novel!

message 140: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished the Skyward series with book 4 Defiant by Brandon Sanderson. It is so good, and I am thrilled to know that another series in this world exists! Sanderson is definitely one of my favorite male authors. I am excited to read the other series.

message 141: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments Things We Lost in the Fire by Mariana Enriquez is a collection of dark and creepy short stories. I enjoyed them quite a bit. I would like to read more of her work.

message 142: by Misty (last edited Aug 18, 2024 01:15PM) (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished The Road to Wigan Pier by George Orwell today, and I have mixed feelings about it. Orwell was an excellent writer. He could also be extremely pig-headed, arrogant, and short-sighted. There is a lot of great info in this book, and the historical look at life for the working class in the UK in the 30s was fascinating. There were also points where I wanted to jump back in time and slap him. Glad I read it though.

I also reread Sunreach by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson. We took my kiddo to university and had a six hour drive. My husband and oldest daughter are also reading the Skyward series, so we listened to it in the car. It was maybe even more enjoyable the second time.

message 143: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I have mixed feelings about The Squatter and the Don by Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton. I absolutely loved the historical aspect of it. I also enjoyed reading work from a Mexican American woman who got pushed aside in favor of male authors. It was jarring to see her own racist attitudes towards both Black and Native American people. The "white savior" aspect of it was unsettling.

message 144: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments My kiddos got me Liar, Dreamer, Thief by Maria Dong for my birthday, and I just finished it. It was really fabulous. I love that she went to a bookstore and looked specifically for a thriller written by a BIPOC woman. <3 This book is super twisty, and I was never quite sure what was going on. I wasn't even sure if the MC was a victim or perpetrator at the beginning. That's is the mark of a good book!

message 145: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I just finished Magician: Master by Raymond E. Feist. This series is my husband's absolute favorite. It is enjoyable. If it weren't for the misogyny, I would probably enjoy it a lot more, but I do really like it. This one dragged on a bit for a while, but then it picked back up. I'm glad that I read it.

message 146: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I listened to The Luck of the Bodkins by P. G. Wodehouse mostly on a road trip. Wodehouse really epitomizes dry British humor. I love it. This book was a comedy of errors, and I needed a good laugh.

message 147: by Misty (last edited Aug 27, 2024 03:03PM) (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I also listened to Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross on my road trip. It was very good. It was a little like You've Got Mail but during a war involving paranormal beings. My oldest kiddo was the one who turned me onto it. I'm looking forward to the second half of the duology.

message 148: by Misty (last edited Sep 09, 2024 12:49PM) (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I finished The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, and I admit that I am seriously underwhelmed. I really disliked the book. I did not care about a single character, and I despised many of them.

Misty | 1489 comments I read Anges Grey by Anne Bronte for another challenge. Unfortunately, there is some pretty horrific animal abuse in the book, and it really soured me to the story. The rest of the story was okay, but I had a hard time getting into it because of the animal abuser.

message 150: by Misty (new)

Misty | 1489 comments I listened to One Story, One Song by Richard Wagamese today at work. I really enjoy his work. It was just a lovely book full of beauty and heart ache. I definitely recommend it.
