Charlaine Harris

Charlaine Harris has been a published writer for over forty years. Her first two books were standalones, followed by a long sabbatical when she was having children. Then she began the Aurora Teagarden book, mysteries featuring a short librarian (eventually adapted for Hallmark movies). The darker Lily Bard books came next, about a house cleaner with a dark past and considerable fighting skills.

Tired of abiding by the mystery rules, Harris wrote a novel about a telepathic barmaid that took at least two years to sell. When the book was published, it turned into a best seller, and DEAD UNTIL DARK and the subsequent Sookie books were adapted in Alan Ball's "True Blood" series. At the same time, Harris began the Harper Connelly books. Harper can find the bones of the dead and see their last minute.

When those two series wound to a close, the next three books were about a mysterious town in Texas, called Midnight.

A change in publisher and editor led to Harris's novels about a female gunslinger in an alternate America, Lizbeth Rose. The Gunnie Rose books concluded with the sixth novel.

She's thinking about what to write next.

I thought I was done with Charlaine Harris after finishing the debacle known as . . . .

(You totally heard that in his voice didn’t you? Samesies.)

But then we changed our T.V. provider and got the Hallmark Mystery Channel as part of the new package and I discovered that D.J. Tanner played the part of Aurora and like a crapload of these movies had been made and they often play on Sunday nights which is my most mind-spinny night of the week and I find stuff like this happening quite frequently . . . .

And … well, you get the picture.

Anywho, when I discovered these made-for-television gems of stories I’d read waaaaaaaay back when I just had to take a gander. So I watched . . . .

And watched . . . .

And watched . . . .

And … again, you get the picture. Now I’m kind of addicted to them and keep re-watching them like a pathetic nutcase (shut up, Ron). I even picked up #9 in the series after taking a looooonnnnnng hiatus. Then this one shows up on NetGalley (another addiction which I cannot quit) and well, hell, that’s like waving a baggie of meth in front of ol’ Jesse Pinkman. Especially when I found out ROE AND ROBIN HAD A BABY! and also ANOTHER DEAD BODY IN THE BACKYARD!

I really should know better at this point. These books are the literary equivalent of a meal like this . . . .

They aren’t “good” per se, but you still want to shove them in your face anyway. At this point Roe is like an old friend I don’t see very often and even though her stories of breastfeeding and the most recent color of reading glasses she purchased are going to bore the holy hell out of me, I still want to hear them. 2 Stars because according to Goodreads that means "it was okay" and that's what these are. Perfectly okay and a decent couple hour time suck. I guarantee if the next one gets dangled in front of me for free, I’ll read it too. I mean, really, who wants to eat healthy all the time anyway? Just look what it did to this poor chick . . . .

Woof! Turned her into a real dog!

I have enjoyed this series in the past, but this will likely be the last one that I read. There was far too much focus on feeding the baby, changing the baby, etc. I felt it detracted from the story.

Aurora Teagarden and her husband Robin have finally welcomed their new baby Sophie into their family and have begun their adventure into parenting. Robin is up for a pretty important award for his latest book and has planned to leave town for a couple of days for the ceremony with Roe staying at home with little Sophie. However, right as Robin is packing up to leave Roe begins to feel a bit ill leaving the couple wondering if he should cancel or continue on the trip. Robin gets the idea that they should give the nanny a call that had helped them right after the birth and with her coming in a nights to help Roe along with her stepbrother Philip pitching in all should be well while he is away.

After Robin leaves Roe realizes that this is more than the common cold as she begins to feel worse and worse sleeping as much as she can while the nanny and her stepbrother help with Sophie. Roe awakens one night to find Sophie wailing away through the baby monitor next to Roe's bed so she drags herself up to check on her daughter wondering where the nanny has gone. Once Sophie has been fed Roe begins to search for the missing nanny only to find a body in the backyard that is not the missing Virginia. Now the question for the police and Roe is just who is this mystery woman and just where had the nanny gone??

Sleep Like a Baby by Charlaine Harris is the tenth book in the Aurora Teagarden cozy mystery series. The series introduced readers to the character of Aurora "Roe" Teagarden who is a small town librarian in Lawrenceton, Georgia who had joined the Real Murders Club who met once a month to discuss the books they had read based on true crimes but then actual murders had begun happening bringing Roe into the middle of the investigation and since those days bad luck just seems to follow as Roe continues to find herself in sticky situations. Each book has a separate murder/s to solve and could possibly be read separately but the series also carries over a lot of characters around the town and in Roe's private life through each read. This particular title also focuses on some things from the past so it would probably leave a new reader a bit out of the loop jumping in this late.

As a fan of this series I was excited to see the changes in Roe's life just jumping from the pages in this book. The days of the single librarian have certainly changed from the earlier stories as now Roe is a mommy to her new baby daughter so much of the book had that mommy feel of being proud and protective of her little one. On the mystery side of the story the plot was another one that kept me wondering just how it would turn out and what possibly could have happened on that fateful night that left one woman missing and another murdered. There's still plenty of action and excitement for the new mom all during the story as different events lead to the case finally being solved. In the end this is a great series with very likable characters that I quite enjoy and would definitely recommend to the fans of cozy mysteries.

I received an advance copy of Sleep Like a Baby from the publisher.

You know what I found scary about Sleep Like A Baby? How much Roe’s and my life are alike right now! We both just had a baby (her first and my last). We are both nursing moms who lives revolve around our babies. We both got sick (she with the flu and me with strep). Now she did find a dead body in her backyard and I found a dead mouse in mine. So that is where the similarities end.

Seriously though, Sleep Like A Baby is a wonderful continuation of the Aurora Teagarden series. So easy to read, I picked it up just to see what it was about and in less than 24 hours I had finished it. The story moves at a great pace and just pulls you in. The mystery keeps you guessing and the characters make it interesting. What more could you want from a book!

I do (highly) recommend that if you want to enjoy this book to its fullest then you should read the entire series in order. None of the books are super long so it won’t take you forever to get through them. Each one of them is unique and I know I have enjoyed reading them. This is an enjoyable mystery series and one I always recommend to my friends and family. Now I am patiently waiting for the next book to be released…

Why do I keep reading these when I don't like the writing or any of the characters? Is it because I solve the mystery so early and it makes me feel like a genius, criminal mastermind? Is it because I have some strange allegiance to the characters or a writer I've never met?? I quit! If you see me with another one of these books, slap it out of my hand.

Book #10 in the Aurora Teagarden Series

This series was a roller coaster ride. Some books were great, some not so great. This last book, which didn’t feel like a last book, was just okay. There was lots (and I do mean LOTS) going on and not all of it relevant to the crime. I was expecting something spectacular for a last book and unfortunately I didn’t get it. I kind of feel cheated.

I had low expectations for this one because I wasn't a fan of the previous novel in the series. Thankfully, this one was a better read but I am left with some mixed feelings. I half-want the series to continue but there's also a part of me that thinks it should be put to rest. It's kinda coasting on fumes at this point.

Aurora Teagarden and her husband, Robin, are now the proud parents of baby Sophie. While adjusting to the demands of motherhood, Aurora comes down with the flu. Robin is flying off to an awards banquet so it is arranged for a baby nurse named Virginia to come and help out. But it wouldn't be an Aurora Teagarden novel without something going terribly wrong. In this case, Virginia goes missing and a woman's dead body is found in the backyard. Is the local police going to be forced to solve this on their own now that Aurora is not only sick but has an infant to tend to? Oh please, you just know Aurora is somehow going to find herself in the middle of this one.

I specifically chose this book because I wasn't feeling well and I just wanted a mindless read so I totally related to Aurora feeling like crap. I've come to realize I just don't really care for Robin as a character all that much so I didn't mind that he was absent for part of the story. For the most part I did like how some stuff from an earlier novel in the series was tied in to what was going on in this one. Overall, this isn't one of the stronger books she has written but it was an improvement over the last one for sure.

Roe and Robin, new parents to a beautiful baby girl are adorable. Their love for each other and their child is written so wonderfully. Roe, is sick and Robin will be out of town so he calls in the woman who helped care for Roe and the baby before. Roe is relieved she can sleep and know that all is taken care of while she recuperates. Well things just can't be that easy, nope. Roe wakes to her baby wailing, her care taker missing and there is a dead body in the backyard that is not the caretaker. Things get weird, strained and sometimes ugly from there.
I loved this edition to the series we really got to see their relationship at work and it's a good one. I love a good solid relationship. Phillip her 1/2 brother was a stand up guy who held more than his own. I am always happy after I finish a Charlaine Harris book. Now I wait for more.

SLEEP LIKE A BABY just didn't do much for me. I don't know what happened, but if this is the new Aurora Teagarden, I won't be reading much more.

There was a mystery in SLEEP LIKE A BABY, but my goodness was it boring getting to the answers. We get more information on how Aurora feeds, changes and takes care of her baby than solving any mystery that was supposed to be included in the story. I get it, she's a new mom, but if I wanted to read about the care and feeding of a baby, I would have picked up a parenting book.

There really isn't much more I could possibly say about SLEEP LIKE A BABY, because not much happened between the front and back cover. Yeah, I was disappointed too.

Now that is an interesting ending with a question that can truly be debated! I won't put the question here because it is a huge spoiler. I love these comfy mystery series because of the connection readers get to the characters. When you do the wait for the next book then start reading it, you just feel like you are "visiting" old friends and playing Clue. It is great!

It is no secret I love Charlaine Harris' books because I am pretty certain she is my most read author in my GR stats but without being bias, I can say that some of the installments in her series can be predictable but still enjoyable. This is not a big ending I predicated at all. I was engrossed for a one sitting read waiting to get multiple questions answered; and afterwards I was completely satisfied!

Cozy Mystery | Part of a Series

Sleep Like a Baby was a little underwhelming in the sleuthing department but I couldn't help but enjoy the story anyway. Reading an Aurora Teagarden mystery is like catching up with an old friend. I may not love every aspect of her or the mysteries she gets herself caught up in, but I have been with her for so long that I tend to look past the flaws. That being said, I’m curious to see if Charlaine continues on with the series or not. I genuinely hope she does because I’m always excited to a new Aurora book, but it’s been about two years since this one released so I’m a little concerned.

In any event, I enjoyed this series and found this to be another good addition to it. I do hope that if Charlaine continues the books that she will make Aurora a little bit more upbeat. She doesn’t come off as the nicest character and has an attitude that is noticeable to readers. I wonder if anyone else feels the same?

Aurora Teagarden is learning just how tiring it is to be a new mom. She is home with her newborn daughter, Sophie, and her husband, writer Robin Crusoe, trying to get into a routine and catch up on some much needed sleep. When Robin goes to a writer's convention and Roe comes down with the flu, Roe's mother suggests she call Virginia Mitchell to help out. With Roe feeling miserable and sleeping most of the day, Virginia is a life saver. But one night Roe wakes up to the baby crying. Virginia is not in the house. Roe and her brother, Phillip, search the house and yard. They find a body in the backyard, but it isn't Virginia. It's a stranger. With one person dead and another missing, the police and Roe are baffled.

I read book number nine in the Aurora Teagarden series a few months ago and enjoyed it. I was looking forward to this book, but it just wasn't very good. We read over and over about feeding the baby every two hours, then diapering the baby. Since Sophie won't take a bottle, it's up to Roe to make sure she gets fed. I usually like real life events adding atmosphere to my reading, but this was just monotonous. On top of constantly reading about the baby, there just wasn't much storyline to this mystery. And, I was a bit disappointed with how the mystery was solved. My rating: 2.5 Stars.

New parents, Roe and Robin are about to face a mystery that is going to test their relationship.

Robin goes away on business, leaving Roe at home with their newborn infant. Roe become ill, needing to rely on a nanny’s help, when someone from their past ends up dead in their yard.

This installment in the Aurora Teagarden series shows the melding of Roe’s and Robin’s relationship as well as the strength of the bonds with their friends and family.

Sleep Like A Baby is what we’ve come to expect from Charlaine Harris’s mysteries. It was thought provoking and heartfelt. The characters would be your friends, providing a connection to the storyline, providing a mystery read of substance.

I received this ARC copy of Sleep Like a Baby from St. Martin's Press - Minotaur Books. This is my honest and voluntary review. Sleep Like a Baby is set for publication September 26, 2017.

I'm sick & didn't feel like I could handle anything complicated so I thought a short, cozy mystery would be just the thing. Nope. Not short enough. The first half of the book, especially the first few chapters, are details about Aurora having the flu. The mystery finally takes precedence in the last quarter of the book & is wrapped up in 2 chapters. The journey there was way too long & she's far too PC to be of interest.

Well narrated & I made it through the book, so I'll give it 2 stars. Looks like that's all I've given the past couple, too. I'm done with the series.

“Sleep Like a Baby” by Charlaine Harris is number ten in the Aurora Teagarden Mystery series. Now, let me say that regular readers will love this book. It is written as a first person narrative by Aurora Roe Teagarden, wife of award-winning mystery novelist Robin Crusoe, and mother to newborn baby Sophie Abigail Crusoe. She shares her thoughts and fears about everyone and everything.

I have not read any of the previous books, and I would recommend that new readers NOT start with this book. Read one or even several of the previous books first. The whole plot revolves around characters from previous books. At least the author did not spend pages and pages rehashing or summarizing the past, but as a new reader, I had a hard time figuring out who these people were and why they were important. It was almost like attending the reunion of a high school I did not attend. There were just too many ex-husbands, dead husbands, ex-friends, dead friends, ex-stalkers, and dead stalkers.

The problem for me was that I did not know Roe, and without any other background, she came across spoiled, self-centered, self-absorbed, and ineffectual. I could understand why someone would want to kill her; I wanted to kill her. She is suffering from mild post-partum depression, and her constant complaining about the baby was giving me depression.

But enough said. I know that regular readers are outraged now, but remember, this is my view from the outside looking in. You insiders will love the baby, be glad that Robin won an award, and wonder about the dead body in the back yard. For anyone who has not read all about Aurora Teagarden, start with another book, and then come back to this one.

I received a copy of “Sleep Like a Baby” from Minotaur Books, Charlaine Harris, and NetGalley in exchange for my impartial review. The one-star rating is my "first reader" opinion. I'm sure regular readers will give it more stars!

Sleep Like A Baby is the tenth novel in the Aurora Teagarden series by American author, Charlaine Harris. New mom of baby Sophie, Roe has the ‘flu when Robin goes off to a conference to be presented with an award. Because Aida and John are also away, Robin and Roe enlist help to look after Sophie. But in the small hours of Sunday morning, Roe wakes to a crying baby, an absent helper and, on searching, a dead body in the backyard. Roe’s not operating on all cylinders in this episode, but still manages to figure it all out in the end. This instalment has plenty of twists, turns and a red herring or two; three separate but intertwined stories, as well as incidental side tales that add wrinkles. Roe’s young half-brother, Phillip shows great maturity when needed; some acquaintances surprise pleasantly, others less so. There are dogs and a puzzling theft and things going missing; a shootout in a hospital carpark; both Robin and Roe holding back information to prevent the other from worrying; and the killer will be a complete surprise to most readers. Enjoyable, as always.

Thanks to @StMartinsPress for the #ARC of the newest book in the Aurora Teagarden Series. This one picks up in Roe's life and it wouldn't be Roe's life if there wasn't a murder and/or a mystery to solved. She's got the flu with a baby her hands are full. So with help she settles into a deep sleep only to be awoken to a dead body in the backyard and a MIA babysitter. Such a fun quick murder mystery read. Can't wait for more. #aurorateagarden

The final Aurora Teagarden book. For now. I guess. lol. Since the last 2 came over 10 years after #8. But I do think Aurora should be put aside for new endeavors. Permanently. Personally I'm done with her! Not because I didn't like this book or the series as a whole. I gave more 4 stars than 3 stars overall. And I enjoyed this book a lot, so it's a good send-off. Aurora and Robin have baby Sophie and half-brother Philip so they're nice and situated and Aurora's gotten all she's wanted. No more murders in Laurenceston now!

But boy was Aurora a bit annoying (okay, a lot) with her flu. Girl, how do you think other mothers do it?! They cope! Most of them don't have nannies or maids they can call. I would've liked Aida to have been more of a help but she was distracted with John being hospitalized again. But overall I liked the plot, the mystery, etc and it got a nuisance forever out of Aurora and Robin's hair. I didn't see the suspect coming at all. And it got quite tangled with Virginia missing as well.

Thank you to the NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for giving me the opportunity to read and review Sleep Like a Baby. This is a book that I was given the opportunity to read and review by NetGalley quite some time ago. I had started reading it, but then stopped as life became more busy. As I picked it up again, my interest was piqued because the protagonist, Aurora (Roe) was a first-time mother and I am about to be a first-time mother.

It’s interesting because I read almost all of the Sookie Stackhouse series by this author, twice in fact, years and years ago. It was a series that I enjoyed at the time. However, when I tried to pick it up again as a summertime re-read recently, I could only make it to a third of the first book before quitting. It’s funny how book interests change. Because of this, I was a bit worried of reading another one of Charlaine Harris’ books, but decided to give this one a try.

Unfortunately, this book was not for me…

Though this is the tenth book in the Aurora Teagarden series, I don’t feel readers need to read the first nine books in order to understand what is happening. This is a good aspect of the book and helped me to understand the main characters and the plot.

One of my least favorite aspects of the book, though, was the writing. Though there was a murder and a missing person, there was zero suspense. I didn’t feel excited or really wanted to continue reading through most of the book. At first, I didn’t understand why was the book written this way, but then I realized it was a cozy mystery…cozy mysteries are not for me. I found this out when I read a few Agatha Christie books…Though this was probably own fault when I requested this book at the time since the cover clearly looks like a cozy mystery.

Along with the zero-suspense plot, the other aspect of the writing that I did not enjoy was how mundane every single scene was explained. For example, there were chapters and chapters of how Aurora was sick with the flu, and how challenging that is with a baby. Yes, I can imagine that would be challenging, but I really don’t need to read the same plot point over and over again. This is especially true when it doesn’t move the plot along. This happened in more than one occasion, which was a bit frustrating. I also found the writing to be “tell, not show”. Again, this is something that I don’t enjoy. I would rather be shown what the characters are feeling and experiencing rather than just telling me.

The ending…again, it’s a cozy mystery, so the ending was just ridiculous and did not satisfy me at all.

Overall, though I’m sure there are many out there who would enjoy this type of story, it is not for me. Therefore, I do not plan on reading more of this author’s books, unfortunately. I don’t know…perhaps those who enjoy cozy mysteries and other books by Charlaine Harris will enjoy this.

Well. How disappointing this was. I waited. Pre-ordered. Stopped in the middle of a Ken Follett book to read it. And then ... not the Aurora Teagarden I expected. When did she get so wishy-washy?! Why is she consulting a TELEPHONE BOOK at the same time there are references to cell phone pings and other advanced technology?! I had this figured out way too early in the read. I feel like this one was phoned in, and I may be done with this cozy mystery series.

My relief at finishing this series is palpable and my reviews are feeling quite repetitive. This book is more focused on giving Aurora a happy ever after. The mystery isn’t as well crafted, but by this point, the mystery isn’t what’s keeping the series going. I’m so glad to be moving onto other works by Charlaine Harris. I hope she keeps her series shorter, this one needed to end around book four.

Aurora Teagarden is a new nursing mother in this one. Her husband, Robin, has to go away to a convention to receive an award. Aurora has Philip to help her and Robin hires a nanny for the nights because Ro has a whopping cold which turns into the flu. On the night the flu seems to be the worst, the babysitter disappears and Ro finds a dead body in her yard. Of course she has a pair of neighbors who complain about the disruption during the night. When Robin returns (after winning a prestigious award) he reminds her that they have a nanny camera in the baby's room. When they view it they discover that a woman slipped into the baby's room; the woman whom she found dead in the yard and turns out to be the mentally disturbed fan of Robin's who tried to kill Ro in a previous book. Of course Ro is involved in trying to discover the murderer and the missing babysitter. On top of it all Ro's stepfather, her mother's recently married husband, has had a heart attack and is hospitalized. Nothing like a good mystery to help him be spurred back to good health. I found this one a lot of fun because of all of the complications - missing keys, a stolen diaper bag and a shooting outside the hospital where Ro is visiting John, and of course Ro is out there when it happens.

Reto lector 2024 PopSugar Reading Challenge 15.

Yall. This is one of my favorite series from back in the day. And getting more of them 10+ years later.. yeeee! Gimme! Things are never calm for Aurora and Robin. A new baby, a missing babysitter, a stalker from the past? Oh, my! Not to mention family drama and some local crazies? Whew boy! Lot to handle when you're a new mama like our Roe. And it was such a good time!

I could not put Sleep Like a Baby down!

The characters are what get me. Roe and Robin deal with a lot of crap being thrown their way from all directions. That pressure and stress could easily make someone fold but they carry through and deal. I like these two! There's a quiet strength to them and their marriage and I just enjoy spending time with them. There's no heat in this one, fyi. But you still get that romance and bond which is nice.

There's a good bit of day to day detail as Roe and Robin go about their lives which, I think, could easily become boring in the wrong hands but somehow with this series it works. I quite enjoy just being tugged along as they deal with everything from food to baby care to ignoring their answering machine. lol

On the mystery front I was able to figure out most of it early on but it was still entertaining watching some final pieces fall into place.

All in all, a fabulous time. Sleep Like a Baby hit the spot. I fell in love with this series years ago and Harris has me falling in love all over again. Sleep Like a Baby hit the spot.

Anyone familiar with the author will be getting exactly what they expect here: a straightforward but smoothly written mystery stuffed with a few too many domestic details.

Harris's heroines have always been too focused on their chores or their outfits, but this book kicks that drabness up a notch because it takes all that usual filler and adds a day-to-day accounting of Aurora Teagarden's child care routine. On one hand, I get it. The life of a woman who recently gave birth is naturally going to revolve around her baby. But all those "feed the baby, burp the baby, diaper the baby" passages could have been spent on more interesting things. Like, oh, I dunno... character development?

Motherhood has apparently changed Roe, but I got that impression mostly because she thinks about it a lot. I did like that the setup ties into her new mom fears. Unfortunately the ending doesn't follow suit, and I felt like some of the clues were way too obvious.

Still, it's a short, fast read, and I liked checking in with the characters. Hopefully the next installment will involve less fluff.

Sleep Like a Baby is the 10th installment in the delightful Aurora Teagarden mystery series by New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris. This series has been one of my favorites ever since I read the first, Real Murders, many years ago. In this latest volume, Roe and her husband Robin are settling down to parenthood with their newborn daughter, when Roe comes down with a bad case of the flu at the same time Robin has to leave town for a prestigious award ceremony. They hire a nanny to help with the baby until Robin can return, and, though Roe is very sick, things seem to be going well enough—until Roe wakes one night to a crying baby, the realization that her nanny is missing, and the discovery of a unknown woman’s dead body in her back yard.

Sleep Like a Baby is a wonderful read, and highly recommended, as are all the books in the Aurora Teagarden series.

I used to love Aurora Teagarden books. I did. Last one was so good, and so well connected with the previous, that it seemed like a revisit with a long lost friend.

This one. This one not so much. I enjoyed the beginning and loved the ending. And that's it. Maybe because the remaining 70% is basically a repetition of breastfeeding and how wonderful Sophie is.

I get it. First borne, specially those who are almost a miracle baby, are the sole attention of their parents. BUT, this is a book people. There's a limit to the amount of Sophie was doing that adorable eh sound I can stomach. Specially because it doesn't add up. And so many feedings and adorably looking to her daughter also doesn't combine with her being absent for 2 hours period at a time. With a 2 month old baby? Not a chance.

So yeah, I'm disappointed with the book. Which makes me really sad because I like the current set of characters and their development.

Update: Removed rating as a favor to her dedicated fans. Bless them for their fortitude in continuing to follow her.

Have to rate it to get it to stop appearing as a recommendation. After the ending of Sookie Stackhouse, will never read this author again.
