Meredith | 1777 comments We would only read one of the LeGuin's if two wind up in the top six. So, make sure to vote for your preferred read!

I was hoping for the SFFBC equivalent of an Ace Double.

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I'm not sure if that applies to rereads, I don't remember if we've ever had that situation?

I'm voting for lathe and not word for world. my heart can't handle word for world right now

message 60: by Meredith (new)

Meredith | 1777 comments That would be an intense three months.

message 61: by Cheryl L (new)

Cheryl L | 415 comments Either Le Guin is fine with me. I likely voted for all of hers. Except for Left Hand of Darkness, which I've already read, but would absolutely read again, Such a fascinating book.

message 62: by Cheryl L (new)

Cheryl L | 415 comments I'm fine with either of the Le Guin's. And I likely voted for all of hers, save for The Left Hand of Darkness, which I've already read. Would absolutely read that again though. Such a fascinating book!

message 63: by CBRetriever (new)

CBRetriever | 6113 comments Jade City is the only on in the top that is in my TBR so I'll likely participate in that one. I read the Le Guins back in my tree books life and don't feel like purchasing them again. I do own Snow Crash, so I'd be up for a re-read of that one

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments Reading a lot was one of the (few) joys of in spring 2020, while Italy was in hard lockdown. And I have a fond memory of reading The Left Hand of Darkness at the time; I think it was for a previous SFFBC re-read?

Currently 4 out of 6.
Please let's keep The Obelisk Gate among the winners!
The Dispossessed has been nominated for the same quarter in other Goodreads forums. Can we do a merger?

message 72: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Yeah Left Hand has been discussed in VBC.

message 73: by Hank (new)

Hank (hankenstein) | 1230 comments I can't read the Dispossesed again so I took it off my vote. I will happily read any of the others.

Bonnie | 1279 comments Horsetrade offer:
I will trade a vote for a UKLG book* for a vote for The City We Became by N.K Jemesin.

For the Re-reads I cast a ballot for every book I have not already read; in the current 12+, The City We Became is the only one I haven't read. I'll go in and vote for another book if you'll add one for City.

*or any other top title, for that matter

Bonnie, I would happily comply with your trade, but I already voted and (sheepish grin) voted for all of the UKLG books.

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments Interesting proposition, but we are re-reading a series by the same author already, and I'd rather finish one before starting another. This is the reason I did not vote for the Inheritance nor the Dreamblood series this time. Besides, I think the Great Cities series isn't even concluded yet?

message 79: by Olga (new)

Olga Yolgina | 589 comments Please don't vote The Obelisk Gate out of the top 6, we need it for January VBC! *fingers crossed*

message 80: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments You are all absolutely bonkers! XD

Also Obelisk looks safe for now.

24 The Lathe of Heaven (176 pgs)
21 The Left Hand of Darkness (304 pgs)
19 The Word for World is Forest (160 pgs)
18 The Dispossessed (387 pgs)

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments I like the detail of the number in bold... LOL.

Four UKLGs in the top four is something I'd actually never expect to see, and I'm happy it happened with her (I took a screenshot, just in case). I wouldn't be opposed to planning ahead for the second quarter. Other names in my SFF to-read list are Ann Leckie, Octavia Butler, Samuel Delany...

... but I can easily persuaded.

p.s.: UKLG VBR in, say, late March or April?

message 83: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Haha I wanted to draw attention to the fact that the top 6 looks very secure.

It's just an invitation for someone(s) to blow everything up again! :D

message 84: by a.g.e. montagner (new)

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments Please don't, this is so great.
And if nothing else, her novels are short and basically stand-alone, despite being set in the same narrative universe in the case of the Hainish cycle.

message 85: by a.g.e. montagner (new)

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments But given the number of members of this group, anything could happen.

Cheryl L | 415 comments a.g.e. montagner wrote: "But given the number of members of this group, anything could happen."

Anything could happen, but ...

Now Ursula has the top 4 spots on the list. Whatever will our Mods do??

I wonder if part of the enthusiasm for UKLG's scifi is related to people "rediscovering" her. I read A LOT of scifi in the '70s and '80s, but I was not even aware of her scifi books until a few years ago. I read The Left Hand of Darkness, and it instantly moved into my top 10 favorite books. I've been meaning to read more of her since then.

message 87: by a.g.e. montagner (new)

a.g.e. montagner (agem) | 667 comments Was she "forgotten" in the meantime?
I wouldn't know... In my case, she's just one of a series of now-canonical sci-fi writers (along with Delany, Butler...) that I wish to read.

On the practical side, I think we'll schedule The Obelisk Gate for January.
We can either also schedule Jade City for January, and then leave two months for a Le Guin marathon, or couple the shorter Le Guin novels with the longer Obelisk and Jade.

message 88: by Tesseract (last edited Nov 24, 2023 11:27AM) (new)

Tesseract | 31 comments I’m looking forward to reading all these UKLG books :) Piranesi almost made it, and I think that would be a fantastic book to have a VBR about, but maybe next time.

message 89: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I will definitely schedule the two non-UKLGs into different months!

Interesting. I found The Obelisk Gate to be a super fast read, but with Le Guin, I'm always pausing to think and reread.

I'll look forward to the Le Guin marathon. We still have ~24 hrs so things could change.

Bobby Durrett | 234 comments Now I’m interested in 1Q84. Saw it on my brother in law’s shelf over thanksgiving. He says author wrote the short story behind Drive My Car Oscar winning international movie. Had sexual content. I guess 1Q84 does too and it’s very long. But the movie was cool.
