How does that work? 'Redundancy' has a specific meaning in the UK in the context of jobs.
The closest I can think of is 'early retirement package' to encourage workers to retire at the convenience of management. Is that it?

Kind of Alicia, but not necessarily retire, G took redundancy from a job in her 30's. More when the job is deemed to be no longer required, so they might decide that due to whatever reason, they only need 5 people in a team rather than 6, so one person will be made redundant, but there are strict criteria, it can no longer be first in, last out, if you have 6 managers, each has to be scored against criteria and whoever scores lowest would lose their job, and I think they have criteria on re-advertising that job so they don't get rid of someone they don't like claiming it's redundant, then appoint someone else shortly after.

You probably have to work in the system to get all the nuances.

pretty much
As the perpetually self employed I've only seen it from outside :-)

Sort of, yeah - though the company I used to work for did always ask if anyone wanted to take voluntary redundancy first in case that solved the problem. Think it was so you weren't getting rid of the newest person when they were actually better than people who'd been there a while.

We didn't have snow, and indeed yesterday wasn't as cold as the day before or this morning.
Looking at the forecast we might have had our coldest night and the weekend could see rain

Thanks for the good wishes.

Poor Mister - where do they go in the very cold weather? I'm so spoiled to be inside.
Was awakened this morning before 8 by the window washers - and they were at it forever. Now it looks as if it would rain - their work will be spotted if the wind keeps up.

I still wouldn't trade places!

Actually being cut off isn't uncommon. If there is a road accident and they have to close the road, everybody can be faced with sitting in traffic for hours, or if the accident is in the long place, a several hour detour

I've heard bad reports from your neck of the woods Jim, but wasn't sure if you were in the area cut off or not. no, I certainly wouldn't trade places Alicia, and will make the effort to go more with food, and if it gets too icy, I'll take a bottle filled with water and a tupperware container, sure I read ducks and geese need water with food as they don't produce saliva like we do to swallow.

Many/most animals make it through the winter (and hot summers), but it can't be fun or comfortable, and they have no opposable thumbs to build things easily - tough life.
I don't think disabled people like me would have survived in earlier times - gives one pause.

I've had this sort of thing happen to me and ended up wondering if I'd met them in the past :-)

Yes, that also crossed my mind Jim!

More likely the young assuming the privilege of using your first name when it hasn't been granted. Not allowed when I grew up, now taken by one and all. Our generation got both ends of the stick.

We get some wild wind days here - can't sleep when it's howling!

Hope you find out soon, and they don't make you wait forever.

Thanks for the wishes.

Thanks guys, my team are glad they get to keep me longer!

Thanks guys, it certainly is!

Thanks guys - I'm definitely not worrying about it Alicia, I'm fine till end March.

Do they tell you how they did the previous year (if they had one)?

It's all academic - I can't do one anyway - but you and MTMcGuire make it sound like a lot of fun when it's going well.

They can feel long days, and ironically I'd rather get up early (well, same time as Mon-Fri) on a Sat than a Sun! But, it gets me out of the house, and I do enjoy some of the people we get to meet, I'm not sure what I'd have done some of the weekends without the fairs.

The other problem is that they can be a bit the same. You often see the same people selling the same things so why does the punter keep going.
All sorts of organisations, often local charities, decide to 'have a craft fair' in the hope they'll make some money and without thinking what sort of trade the stall holders will have

Yes, all valid points Jim - was a bit the same fundraising, most charities like to go for tombola's as they are good money makers, but when there are 4/5 of them at the same event, it ends up diluting everyone's takings, unless you have something like a chocolate tombola, or guaranteed to win a prize (though the amount of times I've won something at those that would have cost me less to buy!). We are trying to do a couple of regular events to attract regular customers. One thing that annoys me about craft fair is going and having people like Body Shop there, and I did hear the woman I bought my earrings from on Sun say she buys them, so that to me isn't right for a craft fair, you haven't crafted anything!

Typical. They probably already knew, I'm sorry to say - pig in a poke and all that. But they wanted to be the ones to decide who got to be asked to stay or transfer, instead of having the better workers all leave? Never know exactly what's on the minds of new bosses, but I hope this isn't ridiculously inconvenient for you right before Christmas.
