Also it is time to update your TBR before the 25th of June. Each member will be allowed to substitute up to 6 unselected books on their list for up to 6 new TBR books (if desired) or you can keep the list the same.

I read 27 of these, including 5 of the excluded. There is some choice this month on my TBR shelf:

- Bebo's Girl (Cassola)
- The Professor's House (Cather)
- The Hive (Cela)
- The Long Goodbye (Chandler)
- Dusklands (Coetzee)
- Lord Jim (Conrad)

No strong preference, I'll vote where it matches other people's lists. Regardless of the outcome, I will read the Chandler one, as it has been languishing on my shelf for more than 7 years.

I've read 23 of these.

My choices would be ;
Disgrace (Coetzee)
Journey to the end of night
Fanny Hill

message 4: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I have read 22. I have Elizabeth Costello and Michael K on my shelf but haven’t enjoyed Coetzee in the past. I also have Lord Jim. I read the Big Sleep a long time ago and would quite like a re-read, but I love Angela Carter so will probably vote for New Eve

message 5: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Whelp, slimmest pickings yet for me. Only 3 I haven't read:

-Bebo's Girl
-Dangerous Liaisons
-Eline Vere

I haven't been able to source Bebo's girl yet, so will be voting for 1 of the other 2.

message 6: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments I’ve read 14 of these which I think is my highest yet. I would also vote for The Passion of New Eve as it’s been on my shelf for ages, and Angela Carter is great fun.

message 7: by Mette (new)

Mette (therealmette) I've read 3 and will be voting for The Murder of Roger Ackroyd because I'm down for some British mystery summer reading :D

I also have The Professor’s House and would really like to read Cather. I can’t believe I’ve not read any of her books.

message 9: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I have only read a few of these. Although I have read all the Chandler it was so long ago I don’t count them in my 1001 list. I just read The Professor’s House so that does not need a reread, but everything else on Patrick’s, Kristel’s and Amanda’s list I would be open to. I have a physical copy New Eve on my shelf so will probably vote for that.

message 10: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 713 comments I've read about 25 but I'm not sure of some of them (Coetzee). The only one I have on TBR is What a Carve Up by Jonathan Coe.

Of the books mentioned, I have not read Bebo's Girl, The Hive, Fanny Hill, Dusklands, and Eline Vere. If we're going for fun as mentioned in the other thread, I should probably vote for Fanny Hill...

I can't believe it is time to vote again, this month is flying by for me. I have not read many of these books. I would be up for any Angela Carter, Raymond Chandler, I have a copy of Veronica Decides to Die, and I would like to read The Moonstone.

Honestly, yeah I do kind of hope people vote for this one. I read it years ago and it is one of the wildest books I've ever read I'd love to see what everyone thinks of it.

message 13: by Karen (last edited Jun 20, 2023 12:51PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Karen | 422 comments There are quite a few books I want to read on this list... and I have voted for Dangerous Liaisons which is one of my favourite books of all time. (This habit of re-reading is why I am like a snail with this 1001 list).

message 14: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Yeah I'll go for dangerous liaisons as well.

message 15: by George P. (last edited Jun 20, 2023 05:40PM) (new)

George P. | 725 comments I've read 15, about my usual third (including Dangerous Liasons) so lots for me still to choose from.
I actually have On the Heights of Despair checked out from the library and am planning to start it in a couple days. It's short. Availability of it seems low but I was able to get from the university library.
Claudine's House by Colette is near the top of my to-read list. I read her Claudine at School (not on List) and it was fun.
Of the Chandlers, I've only read The Big Sleep so would like to read either of the other 2.
I've read 2 of the Angela Carters, not The Passion of New Eve.
So, Heights of Despair or Claudine's House are my preferences.

message 16: by Pippin (new)

Pippin | 10 comments A few thoughts :
Dangerous Liaisons is an epistolary novel - so it might be too much if one is reading Pamela at the same time; but then it might be interesting to compare the two.

Disgrace has been on my TBR for a long time, so it wd be good to get it read. Plus I have a copy.

I cd happily read any of the Chandlers. I feel like I’ve read around him, but not anything by him, having read his contemporaries.

I tried to read The Professor’s House recently, but I found it boring and abandoned it. No one’s first exposure to Cather should be The Professor - perhaps start with My Antonia.

I will probably vote for Dangerous since I’m a sucker for anything set in France or by the French.

Last day to get your votes in, winner's announced tomorrow.

Get your TBR takedown lists adjusted before 6/25 when the next one is announced.

If you're new, you can start a list, just leave numbers already used blank. Get your list posted in TBR takedown thread before 6/25.

Winning the Popular Vote: Dangerous Liaisons
Randomizer pick The Hive by Cela, Camilo Jose; Cohen, J. M.; Barea, Arturo published by Dalkey Archive Pr Library Binding

We had six books nominated, Of course Dangerous Liaisons blew all the competition away, second most voted for book was The Professor's House, third was Passion of New Eve.

What will you be reading in August.

Tomorrow the TBR will be posted; last chance to substitute books on your list.

I did give you 5 votes because you introduced yourself. If you plan to vote again you will need to start yourself a thread in the Annual Point Challenge thread and keep track of your own points. Otherwise you get 1 free vote each month if you choose not to start a thread. Any questions please ask. Someone will help you.

Rosemary | 713 comments I've read Dangerous Liaisons, but I was happy to find I can get The Hive in English from the library, so I will definitely read that one. I see there is also an NYRB edition which is probably good, but the older one from the library is much cheaper. (Not free because it's in storage and we have to pay a reservation fee.)

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
I also have read Dangerous Liaisons so not planning a reread. I found a University copy of The Hive so will read it (maybe) when it comes.

For a rare occasion, the randomiser hits my TBR shelf: I'll be reading The Hive. Have fun with Liaisons!

message 23: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Personally glad Liaisons won: will be reading that! have already read The Hive.

message 24: by Diane (new)

I have already read Dangerous Liaisons but look forward to the discussion. I may try and read The Hive as my library has it. Happy reading.

message 25: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments I’ve also read Liaisons - even though it was 40 years ago, I don’t feel ready for a reread yet. I may read The Hive but I’d have to buy a copy so I may just go for catching up on my Randomizer list instead…

message 26: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I have also read Dangerous Liaisons and watched a movie of it, but might join the discussion. The Hive is on Kindle - but not Audible - I am accumulating too many credits because so few books in their catalogue get chosen.

I hear you. Too many credits are adding up.

The same with me- # 283 in my TBR list so it would have been a long while otherwise. I read D Liasons not too long ago so will get The Hive from the university. Looks as if there will be good participation on this randomizer book for August as a lot have read D Liasons..
I happen to be reading both a book and a play translated from Spanish now, so now more with The Hive. Wish my Spanish fluency were better so I could read in the original.
I wonder if The Professor's House will win next time we hit the "C" authors- I've already read that one also.

message 29: by George P. (new)

George P. | 725 comments I've got a copy of The Hive, translated by J. M. Cohen, and I will start with a bit of it this evening.
