Here is my 4.12 rounded to 4 stars review of The Naturalist
by Andrew Mayne:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Murder Mystery / Crime Novel
Overall, it hooked me with the first two chapters. My biggest quibbles are that it is somewhat far-fetched at times and the ending was somewhat abrupt and didn’t provide the full closure that I wanted.
The second Detective Honeywell Mystery was another enjoyable book.
Keep Your Family Close by Annette Dashofy https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Started reading The Girl from Widow Hills
byMegan Miranda after reading a couple of historicals this is a refreshing change.

Here is my 4.44 rounded to 4 stars review of The Dollmaker
by Mary Burton:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Police Procedural / Crime Thriller / Romantic Suspense
The author is a great storyteller with gripping scenes and a disturbing story intermixed with a couple trying to decide if they can reconcile and be happy together. The plot moves at a fast pace with twists and turns. The antagonist’s identity was a complete surprise to me.
Here is my 4.25 rounded to 4 stars review of The Black Echo
by Michael Connelly:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Police Procedural / Crime Thriller
Somewhat dated, but still a page turner
My review for
Mrs Winterbottom Takes a Gap Year by Joanna Nellhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Here is my 4.55 rounded to 5 stars review of Random in Death
by J.D. Robb:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Near-Future Police Procedural / Romantic Suspense
It is amazing that after fifty-eight books this author can still use prose to elicit a strong emotional response from readers. The novel has a deeply involved plot that is thought-provoking and tragic. Robb is an excellent storyteller who combines a creative plot with suspenseful scenes, lots of solid police investigation, and some action.
Finished reading The Christmas Pig by J.K. Rowling this morning. What a fun and imaginative Christmas adventure! Though there are 58 chapters, they are short enough to read a few each night leading up to Christmas.
I finished A Polluted Font
today. It was excellent set in 1377. Lots of discussion of the Poll Tax introduced and the death of Edward III. As usual his glossary is excellent. He does a great job of describing the food of the time. I don't think I could eat it. Start with book one of series.
Here is my 3.12 rounded to 3 stars review of Secretly Yours
by Tessa Bailey:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Romantic Comedy
Opposites Attract
This is a funny and light read with several steamy scenes and well-developed characters. My main quibbles are that I wanted more tension and obstacles as well as some of the actions of Tessa were improper and unprofessional. Overall, this is an entertaining and light book, but not very memorable.
Finished yesterday a touching Christmas fiction novella about a real event, which happened at the front on Christmas Day 1914.The Silent Christmas
by M.J. Leehere is my review :

I listened to Funny in Farsi: A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America
read by the author. I laughed my way through it!
Here is my 4.07 rounded to 4 stars review of Wild Magic
by Alexandra Ivy:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
urban fantasy, paranormal mystery, paranormal romantic suspense
Overall, this novel was a fast-paced and entertaining tale with great characterization that kept me engaged throughout the story. My biggest quibble is that I wanted to know more about the Gyre. I felt the worldbuilding concerning it was insufficient.
Here is my 3.13 rounded to 3 stars review of The Store
by James Patterson and Richard DiLallo:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Disappointing
Here is my 4.16 rounded to 4 stars review of The End

Military Thriller Novella

Immense amount of conflict
Here is my 2.73 rounded to 3 stars review of The Sleep Experiment
by Jeremy Bates:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Horror
Overall, this is a book that kept me turning the pages after a slow start to see what would happen next. It was initially intriguing and this was followed by shocking.
My review for
A Country Vet Christmas by Aussie authors Alissa Callen, Penelope Janu, Stella Quinn, Lily Malone and Pamela Cookhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Last week I listened to a reading of The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon. Though the ending is fairly predictable, it’s still a delightful holiday read. It’s available at Project Gutenberg and on YouTube.
My review for
Mim and the Anxious Artist by Katrina Nannestadhttps://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
**
The last two non-cozies I read were Scrooge-ish and Naughty-ish by L.B. Dunbar, from her Holiday Hotties series.
Both feature women in their late 30s/early 40s finding love with hot firemen in town. I like Dunbar's books, but sometimes wish the heroines weren't so down on themselves -- though, I did enjoy both stories overall.
The second, Naughty-ish, had a great Christmas "DO" list. The heroine had just gotten divorced and forced to move into a smaller house with her kids. She wasn't in the holiday mood, but made a list of things to do for herself and her kids. Her (hottie) neighbor helped her change her list and her attitude...

She later added...
* Build a home (full of traditions)
* Love your family
* Be happy and better
The title of the book comes from her want to be a bit naughty (Naughty-ish). Her hero-next-door was all too willing to help her with her entire list. He's the one who helped her reset her holiday priorities.
I just finished a good thriller One Last Secret
by Adele Parks. Lots of twist and turns. Many changes in our main character Dora.
Here is my 2.89 rounded to 3 stars review of The Busy Body
by Kemper Donovan:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Light and entertaining mystery
Somewhat slow-paced
Those who love Agatha Christie's novels will likely enjoy this one.
Finished out the year with Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization by Neil deGrasse Tyson
I used my Christmas break to finish up War and Peace
by Leo Tolstoy. I've wanted to read this book for years and finally made it a personal goal to read it in 2023. I could have done without some of Tolstoy's philosophizing but overall I enjoyed it.
I'm starting off the year with
Partners in Crime by Steve Hockensmith https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Here is my 4.02 rounded to 4 stars review of The Deceiving Look
by Victor Methos:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Crime and legal thriller
Third book in the series
Overall, this tense, suspenseful, and tragic novel gripped me from the beginning. The author brings strong characters, a great plot, and fascinating relationships to the novel.
I finished Dead Mountain
by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Book 4 in the series. Very good, captures the uniqueness of New Mexico and its history. Good Mystery too.
Here is my 3.95 rounded to 4 stars review of Northwoods

!! This is my 500th review that I've written and submitted to NetGalley in just over 4 1/2 years.
Crime Thriller and Police Procedural
The author brings strong characters, a great plot, fascinating relationships, and excellent pacing to the novel.
