Donne | 63 comments This has been a good year for me and some really good thriller series that I discovered, like Ann Cleeves new Matthew Venn series (4-5star reads) where I read all three this summer. Cleeves is a really good writer and a wonderful storyteller.

The Long Call (Two Rivers, #1) by Ann Cleeves https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Heron's Cry (Two Rivers, #2) by Ann Cleeves https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Raging Storm (Two Rivers #3) by Ann Cleeves https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

While some people can read a series out of order, I strongly suggest that you read this series in order because every installment reveals more about Matthew and his team. I especially liked the Author's Note on the last installment where Cleeves talks about how she created Matthew's character.

PattyMacDotComma | 1260 comments It isn't marketed as a thriller, but Blood by acclaimed Aussie Aboriginal author Tony Birch had me so nervous I couldn't stop reading. Little kids with a slack mother who keeps some seriously bad company makes for a scary read. Just terrific!

Paranormal Romantic Suspense / Urban Fantasy

Overall, this book is emotionally-charged, full of danger, and intense; with a terrific romance and nonstop action. The plot is twisty and the first sentence had me rapidly turning the pages. The author introduces some new types of supernatural villains in this one.

'It is a troubling hour in the United Kingdom as the clouds of a dark zeitgeist roll over the face of sun. This dystopian YA novel is set in 2040, after section 44, new laws making it illegal to ‘express a thought that could be deemed offensive to another group’, have been enacted...'

One-Way Trip by Scott McEwen

When I started to read this book I felt like it is only 3.8 stars reading, but it was only the beginning...

The God of War is a fickle son of a bitch. Don't ever trust his ass.

This book knock me down on my knees. Fast paced masterpiece you can find everything in. There are political backstage, fight, commitment, friendship, love, family, and soldiers made from steel.

A pilot is captured by enemy forces and her friends decided to rescue her without permission from superiors, without authorized military support. The second part of the book is a bloody hell.

I think everyone should read at least few such books during her/his life because it can open your eyes on stuff you can't find in most books.

The only easy day was yesterday.

Imagine that you are a soldier and you can't be noticed by anyone, just secret mission. You are in your shelter and a group of teens come to your place laughing and smoking dope. You have to go ahead to the place of your task and what you do if no one can't see you? The only way is to kill the teens...

Fear accompanies only the possibility of death. Calm ushers its certainty.

Before the final action the protagonist calls his wife. Bla bla bla and a few moment later she ask him (without quote just my words): do you call because you can die in the action?

A few seconds later she told him how much she loves him and it was the time to say goodbye, and her words were so exceptional, so touching, that better read the book, I won't quote it.

Amazing book.

PattyMacDotComma | 1260 comments I recently enjoyed the seventh adventure with Master Mercurius (now Doctor, thank you very much!) in the Netherlands, 17th century. This time, author Graham Brack has him investigating a 'locked-room' Murder In Maastricht where he is supposed to be engaged in a debate about witches. An impossible crime scene? Witches?
