Quite good, but I expected more. Not a light story, unlike what the cover suggests.

A cold case procedural with some interesting novelties and a believable ending.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1441 comments I read Cahokia Jazz by Francis Spufford.
I loved his Golden Hill, but this was a little too ambitious and had too much going on for my liking.

If you like atypical literary fiction and second person povs, this is a good one to try.

Not as fabulous as his debut novel, but still a wonderful read. Great for literary fiction and magical realism readers.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1441 comments I read Late Migrations: A Natural History of Love and Loss by Margaret Renkl.
A series of autobiographical vignettes about Renkl's family intertwined with her keen observations of nature. A poignant, heartfelt, beautiful book, beautifully written and beautifully illustrated.

Operation Happy by Jenni L. Walsh
A middle grade historical fiction based on a memoir. Contains some traumatic incidents that might be too much for sensitive children. A good option, otherwise.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1441 comments I read Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad. I didn't particularly like her first-person narrator, but I thought Hammad did a skillful job of showing the fear and exhausting struggles of Palestinians living under occupation. The way she wove an Arabic production of Hamlet in the West Bank to resonate with the experience of Palestinians was artfully done.

Dale Harcombe | 2011 comments My thoughts about While We Were Dating by Jasmine Guillory While We Were Dating (The Wedding Date, #6) by Jasmine Guillory
No rating on this as I abandoned it
I tried, I really tried. I wanted to like this book. But in the end I never wanted to pick it up again. I wasn’t enamoured of the characters and couldn’t relate to them or the story at all. The read wasn’t helped by repeated use of the f word and blow by blow descriptions in the sex scenes. Some of us know how it works. We don’t need the details. In the end I was skimming more than reading and that’s when I gave up. That said, there are going to be people who will enjoy it. But in the end just not for me.

Glad you enjoyed it but I'm sure it was a tough read. I recommend The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture by Gabor Maté

Had high expectations from this because of the title, the cover, and the setting. But it was a disappointment on many levels.

Tamara Agha-Jaffar | 1441 comments I read Euphoria by Lily King. Inspired by the work of anthropologist, Margaret Mead, King provides an authentic glimpse into the work of anthropologists and the village they are studying in New Guinea. Her research is extensive. The novel moves at a brisk pace, is well-written, and compelling.

Loved this poignant literary fiction focussed on women who couldn't get out of their marriages in the 1990s thanks to Ireland not allowing divorce.
