How It Fits: #1 Beginner's Guide to Necromancy
This was a good start to this series that is heavily influenced by the works of Ilona Andrews. Grier is a necromancer being trained by the Great Dam. Before she can learn her trade she is captured to be sold as a new bride to a vampire going rogue. There are some interesting characters which promise to be interesting in upcoming books. I especially like that the house itself is a character in this series.

Book: The Lies I Told by Mary Burton
How it fits?: Standalone
Date finished?: 2/9/2023
Rating: 4 Stars
Review:
The Lies I Told was a fantastic read with an intriguing plot following a woman who begins looking into her twin sister's unsolved murder.
Thirteen years ago, Marisa Stockton's twin sister Clare was found murdered on the shores of the James River. Marisa has never gotten over the fact Clare's killer was never found and she throws herself into her work as a photographer to cope with the loss. After a car accident that has erased ten days of Marisa's memories, Marisa begins to believe the crash was no accident. As she digs into Clare's death, she struggles to piece together those missing days, feeling like she's lost a vital clue. But as Marisa closes in on a killer, she doesn't realize they've been watching her every move.
The plot in The Lies I Told pulled me in right away and I found myself caught up in Marisa's search for answers, both about her sister's death and the car crash that nearly killed her. Marisa remembers next to nothing about the days leading up to the crash but what she does remember is feeling afraid. She turns to the detective that investigated her sister's death to get information about the case as well as to get the report on her accident. I liked that Marisa had no formal training as an investigator and that she was just someone searching for the truth. A lot of her investigation is going over old ground in the hopes someone will change their story and I enjoyed this aspect as it filled us in on what happened when Clare died. Marisa's investigation went in several directions I wasn't expecting and I thought the ending was very well done with just the right amount of suspense to keep you guessing on how everything would turn out.
Marisa was an interesting character to follow and I found myself really enjoying her perspective. Marisa is a recovering addict and alcoholic, having been sober for one year. Her struggles with wanting to drink were hard to read about and it's clear she hasn't had an easy life. Her need to find Clare's killer was understandable and I actually found it to be a bit strange that she was seemingly the only one who cared about finding the killer. There is a romance subplot in the book between Marisa and her neighbor but it's incredibly minor and not at all the focus of the book. In addition to following Marisa's character, we get chapters from the points of view of several other characters including the killer. The killer's chapters were disturbing as it's clear the person has an unhealthy obsession with Marisa/Clare.
Overall The Lies I Told was a great read and I would highly recommend it if you're looking for an intriguing mystery to read.

This is the 1st in the Jack Daniels Series. Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels is on the hunt for a serial killer who calls himself The Gingerbread Man. The mystery was fast paced with a mix of graphic scenes and humor. Can't wait to read more of this series and Jack's exploits.

How it Fits: #1 in the Mia’s Way series
Review:
This was a novella but very dark and difficult to read for me.
17 year old Mia is raped. Her Father is a politician and it’s election time.
It’s pretty nasty. The poor girl has no support. She’s not allowed to complain to the cops as it would ruin the elections.
Very difficult read!!

Book: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews
How it fits?: #1 in Kate Daniels series
Date finished?: 2/12/2023
Rating: 4 Stars
Review:
Magic Bites continues to be one of my favorite urban fantasy series starters. The world building is fantastic and the authors do a great job setting up the different factions. Kate is an amazing main character and I love how powerful she is. I also love the way she pushes Curran's buttons and that she's not afraid to stand up to him. The plot in this one was well done with several twists you don't see coming. Overall, a solid start to the series and one I enjoy revisiting.

How it Fits: #3 in Miss Fortune Mystery series
Review: I'm doing a series re-read. I read this book back in 2015. Been a while and I have to say, it's awesome the second time around.
Jana Deleon is a very talented author. She brings all the small town shenanigans, quirks and characters to life.
Fortune is a CIA spy who is in hiding as she has a price on her head by terrorists and her boss got her to pretend to be his niece and hide out in Sinful, Louisiana.
What ensues is sheer hilarity!! This series is a stress buster and I laugh out loud while reading.

Book: Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews
How it fits?: #2 in Kate Daniels series
Date finished?: 2/15/2023
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Review:
Magic Burns was a great follow-up to Magic Bites and I really enjoyed reading it again. This book expands a bit on the world, particularly how the various factions operate which was enjoyable. We also got the addition of witches in this one and they're definitely a fascinating bunch. Kate continues to be a complete badass and I love that about her. In this installment, she finds her self in charge of a street kid and I loved the relationship she formed with Julie. She's the closest thing that girl has to a mother now and it's great how quickly they came to care about each other. I'm still loving all of the Kate/Curran interactions and how much she teases him in this one. The plot was great and the magic flare added a unique twist to the story. The final battle was incredible and I was in awe of the power Kate wielded. Overall another great addition to the series and I'm glad I reread this one.

How It Fits: #2 Kate Wise Mystery
This was the 2nd in the Kate Wise series and whilst babysitting her new grand-daughter she is called in to help the fbi with a serial killer who is targeting couples. We see more of Kate’s character development as she struggles with semi-retirement and juggling a new grand-daughter and love interest. Definitely a series that is improving. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Kiss the Girls by James Patterson

This was the second in the Alex cross series and although it was a re-read It was still thoroughly enjoyable. Alex’s niece is missing and there are two serial killers hunting along the north and south coasts, Casanova and The Gentleman Caller. This novel had everything that I have come to expect from a Patterson novel. Fast paced with lots of twists that keep you guessing. Good character building. Book: Odd Earl Out by Anna Bradley
How it fits?: #2 in Games Earls Play series
Date finished?: 2/19/2023
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Review:
Odd Earl Out was an enjoyable read. Juliet and Miles had great chemistry and I loved the teasing and flirting between them. I found Miles' reluctance to admit his feelings to be a bit frustrating as it was clear to everyone that he was in love with Juliet. His determination to be alone was also annoying at times and I liked that his cousin went to Juliet to get help to pull him out of it. The ending was cute and fitting for them as a couple. I'm definitely interested in reading Helena's book after the little bit we saw of her at the end. Overall a quick, satisfying read and I would definitely recommend it.

The characters Jon and Kylie were fantastic. Great to see Jackson Crow. That guy is a phenomenal character.
All in all a fantastic 5⭐️ read for me.

I missed that you had finished 3 in the series and the bonus wasn't listed in your last post so I didn't realize. Sorry about that. I don't think I can go back and adjust that now. Thankfully it doesn't matter who claims the bonuses since we're working towards them collectively.
But I noticed your book for this week works for the 500+ page bonus. So I will put it down for that.

Review:
Magic Strikes continues to be my favorite book in the Kate Daniels series and I loved revisiting this one. The Midnight Games are such a neat concept and their inclusion made for a really interesting plot. Plus, they added a few new supernatural creatures to the world which was neat to see. The final fight in the Games was incredibly well done and really showcased Kate's loyalty to those she cares about. The Pack is front and center in this installment which is great as they're my favorite faction in the book. We got some fantastic moments between Kate and Curran in this one and I'm excited to watch their relationship develop. Overall, a solid addition to the series and I'm looking forward to continuing on.

This is the 3rd in the Kate Wise series where we see Kate being called in to investigate a murder that is similar to her only unsolved case 8 years previously. 2 days into the case she is pulled off it so the bureau can save face with higher ups. She suddenly finds herself alone as her daughter and her on/off boyfriend have made other plans. Despite being off the case she goes lone wolf resulting in her facing losing her badge altogether. Needless to say she doesn’t as she confronts the killer and solves both cases. This was an ok read.

Conflict in Little Leaf Creek by Cindy Bell
Date Read: 2/26
Rating: 3*
How It Fits: #3 Little Leaf Creek
Review
This was a nice quick cozy. Cassie who has recently moved to little creek is struggling to fit in and is trying to get a Thanksgiving dinner together for her neighbours and friends. When she goes to a local orchard she comes across the body of the current owner and soon becomes involved in trying to find out who murdered him. There are some decent characters in this book and a blooming romance between Cassie and the handyman Sebastian. Although a love triangle may be in play as the local detective Oliver is also vying for Cassie’s attention. A good story and plot, it wasn’t until the last couple of chapters that I worked who had killed James and why.

Review:
Fall Away was an enjoyable read and I liked the romance between Gaby and Trick. I was curious to see how the author would pull this romance off as we meet Trick as he's leaving a one night stand with Gaby's roommate. I felt that was going to be a hard obstacle to overcome and it definitely did cause a few issues between Gaby and Trick. It's clear they're into each other but she's having a hard time getting past how he slept around and was with her roommate. I liked how they worked that out though and that their romance was pretty drama-free. Overall a cute read and I'll definitely read more in the series in the future.
