The Cater Street Hangman by Anne Perry (Murder Mystery series that takes place during the Victorian age, plus lowkey romance between a lady and a policeman)
I just finished a re-read of Shroud for a Nightingale by P.D. James. I read all her books back in the 80s and 90s and am enjoying them all over again. Such a great writer!
A tantalising read . . .
A Stranger in the Family by Jane Casey ⭐⭐⭐⭐.4 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Poor old Harry Bosch. Alone again in Trunk Music, but at least Michael Connelly has given him plenty of action to keep him busy. An L.A. murder leads him to Las Vegas, and you know what that means.
My review of Trunk Music-Harry Bosch #5
I finished an excellent HIstorical mystery book. The River We Remember
by William Kent Krueger. Beautifully written. Set in 1958 Minnesota. Characters are very well described so you feel you know them. I highly recommend.
The perfect blend of romance and Australian outback mystery/crime thriller!
The Grazier's Son by Cathryn Hein ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I got to take a slightly early look at
Brie Careful What You Wish For by Linda Reilly https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I haven't read everything (yet) that much-loved Aussie author Garry Disher has written, but I can recommend everything I have, and his brand new standalone novel, Sanctuary, is right up there. Grace Latimer is a crook. Well, yes, but she has reasons - give her a break!
My review of Sanctuary
Completed a true crime tale Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou | audiobook read by Will DamronElizabeth Holmes, however well-intentioned, hoodwinked a Who’s Who of America’s political, CEOs, scientific, and Silicon Valley’s elites into bankrolling her medical device that never worked.
Everywhere You Look by Liv Constantine is the first of six Amazon Original Stories in their Never Tell collection. Secrets and lies abound. I hope I enjoy the next ones more than this.
My review of Everywhere You Look(They're published separately, so you can take your pick.)
I'm finishing out the week with
The Fly on the Wall by Tony Hillerman https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
💫💫💫💫💫and if I could give it more stars, I would!
If I Should Lose You by Natasha Lester https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
An addictive read I finished in less than 24 hours!
Sanctuary by Garry Disher ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The writing is fine, it's the plot I have an issue with. It's just so...bland. The mystery is not scary or intriguing, because the stranger writing in the diary is barely mentioned. The rotating POVs don't enhance the story much, with plenty of repetition of the same scenes just with slightly differing perspectives. The identity reveal of the villain is so incredibly underwhelming, i read it and was like...them? that's who the killer is? the red herring characters also aren't scary either. The stakes of this story is low, and for how much I like murder mysteries, this was so boring.

I'm starting out the week with
An Orphan of Hell's Kitchen by Liz Freeland. It was nice to connect with the characters again, but the pacing could have been much better.

This is not the most plot-heavy book, but it makes up for it with expert characterization and tension-filled atmospheric writing. The visceral fear I felt reading this, OMG! It would've been even more immersive if I read this during a snowstorm to match the book's setting. I'm very impressed with how elegantly and poetically Sierra conveyed the nasty, ugly, frightful stink of fear and rage, and the uniquely female experience of navigating motherhood and womanhood in the face of society's judgement.

I got to reconnect with Jack Prester in
Yosemite by Sandy Dengler. In this book, Jack is trying to keep 3 CPAs safe in the wilderness of Yosemite from the assassins trying to kill them before they can testify at a trial. A slow burn thriller that is hard to put down.
Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Happy Publication Day!
A Clock Stopped Dead by J.M. Hall ⭐⭐⭐.5 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Thank goodness I can count on Irish author John Boyne to write interesting, thought-provoking stories. Earth, the latest in his Elements quartet of linked novels, is up there with the best of them.
My review of Earth
I can see the appeal of Kill Your Husbands by popular young Aussie author Jack Heath, but the mixup between the print version and the audio rather spoiled the experience for me. Jack was gracious enough to explain what happened in a long comment, for which he deserves a lot of credit. Have a look.
My review of Kill Your Husbands
Eternity in Death by J.D. Robb 4-StarsAre Vampires real? Eve doesn't think so.
My Review
Swamp Spies by Jana Deleon 3 1/2-StarsDid good ole boy Gage have a heart attack or was it murder?
My Review
Cheater by Karen Rose 3 1/2-StarsSloooow burn romance and mystery.
