This was my first novel by Sally Hepworth. This was well written but domestic thrillers might not be for me.

This is the second novel in his Neal Carey mystery series that was originally printed in the the early 90s. I am picking up each of the 30th anniversary hardcover reprints as they are released this year.

"I tend to stay well clear of Booker short list nominees. My reason for doing so is I find the books nominated strive too hard to be different or quirky ..."

that's exactly what I look for in those books ... I get so tired of same old same old and anything different or quirky grabs my attention quickly and tends to hold it. I loved The Trees -- how better to tell such a horrific story than by using a horror story format? And my thinking on that book's silliness was that the underlying truths of the story are so gut-wrenchingly sad that if you don't laugh over what he's written, you'll just cry.

Araych | 676 comments Silesian Station Silesian Station (John Russell, #2) by David Downing by David Downing

John Russell #3 (not all books in the series are chronological) I'm reading the series in order. It's now 1939 in Berlin and Russell is being pulled in several directions by events leading to WWII. He is now forced into some amateur spycraft. No more spoilers. I think this is the best of the series so far -- lots of suspense and details about Berlin life at that time. 4 stars.

I read three other novels by Fesperman earlier this year and thought they were excellent. This one has also started out well and I hope to continue sampling his works.

I'm all over the place. I'm about 1/2 way through The Children on the Hill by Jennifer McMahon, 75 or so pages into James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon by Julie Phillips (not making a lot of headway in this one just now), six stories into Her Smoke Rose Up Forever by James Tiptree Jr. and I have four stories left in The Adventures of Ellery Queen.

I plan on forging ahead in the Tiptree collection and the McMahon, then finishing the other two over the next month or so.
