Paul Alkazraji | 99 comments Just finished reading Katherine Blessan’s interesting new novel 'T for Tolerance'.

'It is a troubling hour in the United Kingdom as the clouds of a dark zeitgeist roll over the face of sun. This dystopian YA novel is set in 2040, after section 44, new laws making it illegal to ‘express a thought that could be deemed offensive to another group’, have been enacted...'

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments I recently read Jhumpa Lahiri's Pulitzer Prize winner, Interpreter of Maladies, a collection of short stories that mix and stir Indian cultures with others. No matter who people are or where they live, couples are couples, parents are parents, and everyone has customs they can't always explain.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments The River We Remember The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger by William Kent Krueger

The premise of the book is as follows: in 1958, a rich landowner is killed in rural Minnesota, and the leery racist townsfolk want to blame a Native American farmer. However, there's a LOT more going on in this novel.

Excellent book from a fine storyteller. 4.5 stars

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments The Bitter Past The Bitter Past (Porter Beck, #1) by Bruce Borgos by Bruce Borgos

The murder of a former FBI agent in Nevada has connections to a Russian spy who infiltrated the Nevada Proving Grounds (atomic bomb tests) in the 1950s.

Good police procedural/espionage thriller 4 stars

message 1572: by Araych (new)

Araych | 677 comments A Man Without Breath A Man Without Breath (Bernie Gunther #9) by Philip Kerr by Philip Kerr

Bernie Gunther #9, probably best to read series in order. In March of 1943 Bernie is tasked to investigate reports of a mass grave in the USSR (Russia) near Smolensk. In fact what he finds are multiple mass graves in and around the Katyn forest. The graves, we know now, contain the bodies of over 20,000 Polish officers and other prisoners of war who were murdered by the Russians in 1941. So the book details Bernie's attempts to figure out what has happened there. I have read and enjoyed several books of this series and this one is by far the slowest and dullest. Lots of confusing names -- Russian and German-- and way too much detail of conversation after conversation. It's not a mystery, it's not a thriller -- it's historical fiction; extremely well researched and written but not really up to Kerr's normal high standards. 2 stars -- just OK.

Author Elly Griffiths has announced that this 15th book in the 'Ruth Galloway' mysteries is the last in the series. In this novel, Ruth (who's an archaeologist) helps the police investigate the cold case murder of a college co-ed.

Nice finish to the series. 3.5 stars
