M.J. Lee's ninth book in the Ridpath series was worth the full five stars: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments A Company of Laughing Faces is a curious and moving short story by South African Nadine Gordimer, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991. In this, she captures the mixed feelings of a 17-year-old girl being pushed by her mother into the company of other young people.

Thriller about an ex-cop ex-football player with eidetic memory solving the murder of his family and others. I liked it, it's good story but it didn't need to be 400 pages. 3 stars.

I've finished reading Strega by Johanne Lykke Holm. So out there and so very good. Surreal is not a word I use lightly, but this one fits that bill.

Currently reading Pyre by Perumal Murugan (India), although it's not exactly floating my boat at the moment. It's still early days, so hopefully it will get better for me shortly.

Araych | 676 comments The Big Bundle The Big Bundle by Max Allan Collins by Max Allan Collins

Nathan Heller #21, in which Heller is called in to help the authorities in an actual kidnapping in Kansas City in 1953. The 6-year-old son of a wealthy auto dealer is kidnapped and the ransom is set at the then-record sum of $600,000. The case ends up involving Robert Kennedy, Jimmy Hoffa, and most of the important mobsters and criminals of the area. The kidnapping , of course, actually happened (Bobby Greenlease) and Collins does his usual bang-up job of relating and "solving" this old mystery. I'm a big fan of the series and this book and the series is highly recommended.
