Are you still all alive? You are terribly quiet! It's very unusual ;-)

Eli (kongshavn) Hi, could Kongens nei 10. april 1940 by Alf R. Jacobsen or Harry Potter Gryffindor Edition Series 7 Books Collection Set By J.K. Rowling (Philosopher's Stone, Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of The Phoenix & More) by J.K. Rowling work at 1 Red?

message 111: by Eli (new)

Eli (kongshavn) If not, I'd like so start with Independence: Vintage Minis (because it can me a Wild Draw 4).

Eli

Uuuuuh, keep that yellow for March or April! Yellow covers are hard to come by, so definitely keep that close by. I would feel like we're "wasting" a yellow cover if we used it for a Wild Draw 4 hehe.

The non-fiction book doesn't work for 1 Red - it doesn't fit any of the criteria for a 1 card as far as I can see. If you're unsure about the criteria, they're all listed in the rules ( = All About Uno).

As for Harry Potter, if you're actually going to read one of the RED Gryffindor editions, it could work, but depends on the book you're reading. You listed the collection here so it's hard to tell.

Double-check that when you're on a computer, it'll be easier on a larger screen :-)

Can we use it for a Draw 4? We don’t have any yellow cards, right?

message 117: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments That is true even. I only had in mind we still need red ones, didn't check others and didn't want to waste a yellow cover :-p

It's set in Oslo before they have to escape. And one of the main characters in Prince Olav. I have the Gryffindor edition in red, so it will work.

If the majority of the book is set in Oslo, then yes, it will work. Otherwise not.
For non-fiction books, there are no characters, so Prince Olav cannot be a criteria for fitting a card.

Ok yay, for a red Gryffindor book, but which one? The link you posted was for the entire series. Which book would you read? The first one in the series? (Because I can't remember if there is an O character in the others, it's been a while since I've read them hehe.)

Have you read anything by Feeney before?

message 123: by Eli (new)

Eli (kongshavn) Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone. I don’t have any other books that are red. I can go to the library tomorrow and see if I find any. But I’ll happily ready HP again.

That first book has a special magical feel to it, discovering Hogwarts and all the characters.. :-)
I'll slot you in for the 1 Red then!

message 130: by LaurLa (new)

LaurLa | 1005 comments Here is another maybe Red 1 if we need it. Probably will be my first or second book as I need to read it for Turf Wars by Sat.

Two Wrongs Make a Right by Chloe Liese

message 131: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Cool :-)
We can use that for our last remaining Wild Draw 4 card if you're going to be reading it anyway!

message 132: by Laura (last edited Jan 29, 2023 04:45PM) (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Now that we have our Turf Wars tasks for this round, I know what I'm starting with in the first week!

Cowboys for Christmas (Cowboys Online #1) by Jan Springer (If I find an H character I'll substitute it for my Red 3 Draw 4)
One Good Earl Deserves a Lover (The Rules of Scoundrels, #2) by Sarah MacLean (Blue 2 Draw 4 if I don't find an H in the above book)
Shattered Vow (Shadowblood Souls, #1) by Eva Chase (E author)
Captured by Ella Goode (E author)
Kings of Chaos (Dirty Broken Savages, #1) by Eva Ashwood (E author)

What's everyone else starting with?

message 133: by Kayt (new)

Kayt (kaytm) | 135 comments Ok this might be a silly question, but being new..... With our Uno shelf do we shelf them as we are planning to read them for the upcoming month, or once we have read them? I just want to make sure I am doing things right.

message 134: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Kayt, I usually add a book to my Uno shelf as I start reading it. Otherwise I forget to add them when I finish!

message 135: by Audrey Jane (new)

Audrey Jane | 176 comments Almost there team !!! I had to wrap up everything at work for my departure the past week but I'm now officially in my starting block ready to read for this challenge :)

@Kayt: I do the same as Laura. I put it on my 'uno' shelf as soon as I put it on 'currently reading'.

message 136: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments I add mine when I finish, though my UNO shelf is at the top of the list, as I make current challenge shelves sticky :)

message 137: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I do the same as Sammy hehe.

There is no wrong or right way of doing it really, as long as the books end up on your shelf, latest when you finish them :-)

message 138: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments Kayt wrote: "Ok this might be a silly question, but being new..... With our Uno shelf do we shelf them as we are planning to read them for the upcoming month, or once we have read them? I just want to make sure..."

With the Uno shelf, it's to make the challenge a lot easier on the captains/co-captains. So we can go to your shelf and sort by Date Read. That way anything on your shelf that is not yet read will get sorted to the bottom (or top depending on sort order). So we can mentally filter them out to make sure all your books are on the spreadsheet. I have had team mates who put all the books they want to read for Uno on the shelf. It's not my preferred way (not sure about Eldarwen), but if it helps you stay organized, it works for us.

message 139: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2892 comments @Kayt, @Jodi, @Emily, can you please post a link to your Uno shelf before the challenge starts? Thanks!

message 140: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Reeeeally not long now!!

If you have any questions before we start, please do not hesitate!
If you're unsure about the game play, don't worry, you'll figure it out easily enough once the first completed books start coming in and the spreadsheet is being filled in :-)
It isn't very difficult.

message 141: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments For the new players among you, here is a sample for a completion post, which has also been posted to the first page of this thread for easy finding, in case you're unsure on how to do it or what we need from you :-)

Completion Post:

Bookcover (especially important for colour cards)
Book: the edition you have actually read (for audios, use the default)
Date Read:
Pages: optional but (!) for any books tagged Childrens' and/or Middle Grade, please indicate that you have verified the wordcount
Rating: optional but could lead to interesting discussion :-)

Cards:
- please list all the cards the book works for
- clearly state the reason, preferably give full character names where they're indicated

Mini Challenge:
- which task(s) does the book work for?

=======

You don't have to do it exactly like this, but this is the basic information we need.

Childrens' and/or Middle Grade books / plays / poetry / manga / graphic novels etc:
As per the rules (if you're unsure, the rules are always there to be consulted), books that have one of these tags need to be verified to have a word count above 25.000 words. The easiest way to do this is to check arbookfind (.com or .co.uk or ..). Most books are listed on those sites, but not every site has the same books for some reason. Or check if the audio version is over 3 hours long. Again, this needs to be a length given by a reputable source, such as audible, bookbeats etc. (Youtube is not a reliable source for example.) Laura has posted this information on the first page of this thread.
If you plan on reading such a book, please do yourself a favour in order to avoid frustration and check the word count before you start reading, so you don't end up having read a book for the challenge, which we cannot actually use for the challenge.

Mini Challenge - this will be for later in the month ;-)

If you want to read for a colour card, I'll happily relinquish the 2 Blue if you have something that fits for it?
There will also be plenty of colour cards in the next rounds :-)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments I may be a day or so late starting my print books, as I still haven't finished Project Hail Mary. *sigh*

I'm waiting on a pair of reading glasses. Once they come, I should be able to read print easier again :)
I'll be flying through the audios in the meantime though, lol. (except A Suitable Boy. I expect that one will take me a few days!)
