I know you were joking! Sometimes my snarky comments don't come off as humorous as I mean them to.

Don't be nervous!!!!! Everyone was a first time player once, and your team will help you out.

Goodreads needs a snark/sarcasm font 😄

For fun sometimes I remind people that I really didn’t care for the Harry Potter books and then step back with some popcorn to watch the reactions.

message 404: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments That's like saying that you didn't cry when Bambi's mom was killed!

So. Popcorn with butter, or no?

Don't you have Jason Statham's private number so he can transport stuff for you? Shame...

Me too. It's been a favourite book of mine ever since I read it first and I reread it every year. Or relisten to it. The audiobook narrator is really good. :)

I also like that you don't like James and Lily Potter much. 😉

And LOL for that cover. 😂

Ashley Basile (smashreads) | 916 comments 📘 If you could choose magical skills or objects from books, which ones would they be?

I've been thinking about this question, and on the reverse side...
When I was a kid/teen, I used to really want the power to hear people's thoughts... to always know someone's actual intentions and feelings.

As an adult, I've realized that I WOULD NEVER want to know what people really think. EVER. And that I also DON'T CARE what people think of me, specifically.

Look at all that personal growth.
HAHA!

Telepathy would be my idea of hell! That kind of thing would never work, and anyone who had that particular "gift" would have no friends at all, lol.

message 415: by Zoë (new)

Zoë (zeeohee) | 645 comments Hiiii everyone! My name is Zoë! Super excited to be here. :)

📕 Team Challenge experience - I’ve been doing UNO since 2019 and have done a bunch of other challenges as well along the way. I think I started with Clue in 2018 and then ended up here too!
📕 Have you joined UNO before? Yep! See above! I’ve been a captain/co-captain and enjoy keeping spreadsheets organized lol
📕 Favourite genres - fantasy is probably my number one. Under that I love post apocalyptic stuff. Books about witches. Women coming into their power or being in power. Mystical realism.
📕 Book you can't wait to read in 2023 - I plan on reading more nonfiction this year, specifically hoping to expand into biology more. I read a book about bats this past year and it was fascinating! I have a book about foxes that I have lined up too. For UNO though I have a few color books stashed away and one is The Peripheral, based on the awesome tv show that came out. Excited for that!

did I fever dream sign ups being open until Jan 14?? I mean I don't mind, the sooner we get our teams ready the better as I absolutely cannot wait and want to think about what to read for our coloured cards already!!! (although I do realize we won't find out our cards right away haha)

Karen, I predict that this will be the year that no one ghosts, and everyone contributes to their team thread, and there will be absolutely no drama regarding cover covers.
Prediction over, and I will now return to my padded cell.

message 419: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments I like your optimism Jenny. I am looking forward to focussing on the fun of Uno this year and hoping for chatty co-teammates. My favorite part of Uno is learning about new books or discussing books other teammates have read.

message 420: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Me too. The best part of challenges, other than the team chat is finding new books to read, either from the mini challenge tasks or team recommendations.

Since I forgot to buy a lottery ticket (again), I am unlikely to ever have enough time to read all of the books on my ever-expanding TBR list.

Yes, I agree too. I have read so many different sorts of books because of this challenge.

message 426: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments I was listening to a podcast, and one of the podcasters talked about how she goes to the library to get a "flight" of books. She checks out a whole bunch, and then looks through them and finds the ones she really wants to read. She says that it is good for the library too, because they get more circulation :)

I was thinking, this might be a fun challenge to try that - to go to the library and get a "flight" of say, yellow books, or red ones :)

message 427: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments That's an interesting idea. From my experience, its the green and yellow covers that are hard to find. And you might want to wait until you see your team's color cards before investing too much time. On the other hand, I currently have 12 books out from the library waiting for Uno to start.

message 428: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Yes! I’m working on getting through book club books now- and some random choices. 12 books from the library sitting there waiting for you- sounds lovely

I just downloaded the audiobook from the library after reading this. I have 12 hours of travel tomorrow (most by train or bus) and needed an audiobook.

message 430: by Keely (new)

Keely (kiwifruit192) | 569 comments I am so glad that UNO didn't start this month. I think I've read 3 books so far and they were all very short. I've been adjusting to full time work because I am covering for someone who has changed shift patterns. Until a new person is hired I will be working full time, which is great for money, not so great for reading. But I should be adjusted by February. I also put a lower book count on the sign up than I have previously as I knew my reading time might be limited.

That said, I'm excited for when the teams get announced!

📕 Name Heyo, I'm Sunny!
📕 Team Challenge experience I absolutely love team challenges and have been in a couple in this group and some others, but not so much in the last two years. So I'm really excited that I get to play again!
📕 Have you joined UNO before? Once!
📕 Favourite genres Lately, I've been almost exclusively reading fantasy, but I also love historical fiction, romance, thrillers, and contemporary, both adult and young adult. I'm a huge mood reader most of the time!
📕 Book you can't wait to read in 2023 Probably Hell Bent, I'm currently re-reading Ninth House to prepare for it!

Vikki (silverstarz) | 145 comments 📕 Name: Vikki
📕 Team Challenge experience: I've done quite a few team challenges over the years but I'm a newbie to this group.
📕 Have you joined UNO before? Nope - I joined the group after hearing about UNO from team mates in a team challenge in another group
📕 Favourite genres: crime & thriller
📕 Book you can't wait to read in 2023: If I'd answered this a bit earlier I would have said Prince Harry's memoir Spare - I know it's a bit like Marmite, people have either been very keen to read it, or are very against it.

📘 My earliest reading memory: The Noddy books by Enid Blyton
📗 My favourite book growing up: As a child I loved anything by Enid Blyton, especially The Famous Five, Malory Towers & St Clares
📒The book I am currently reading: Spare
📕 My comfort read: Any of the Harry Potter books

message 441: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments A little bit late to the party but I’m here can’t wait for UNO my colored covers are all lined up and ready to go.

📕 Name: Louise
📕 Team Challenge experience: I’m a certified challenge addict and will join pretty much any team challenge often 2 or 3 at a time.
📕 Have you joined UNO before?: I believe I’ve played all bar the first round of UNO
📕 Favourite genres: I’m an eclectic reader and will read anything if it works for a challenge. Rather than listening the many genres I enjoy easier to list the ones I try to steer clear off which are Horror, SciFi, Space Opera
📕 Book you can't wait to read in 2023 23 Hours to Midnight this series is always released around my birthday in the UK.

message 442: by Denise (new)

Denise (drams5) | 711 comments I get really anxious that something will happen when I'm in team challenges and I won't meet my monthly commitment. So while everyone else saves up cover colors, I have a stash of 250 pages books in case it looks like I'm running out of time and need to read one in an evening to catch up. 😂

I know nobody would really be mad if "life happened" but it makes me feel better about signing up when I think I'll be busy at work, etc.

message 443: by Kayt (new)

Kayt (kaytm) | 135 comments 📕 Name : Kayt
📕 Team Challenge experience: I have not done a team challenge before, but am so excited to try this. I am shall we say super competitive....
📕 Have you joined UNO before? This is debatable... I think i might have tried to sign up a few years ago.. but... my world exploded in my face at the same time. Here is to less world explosions and more mind explosions from reading.
📕 Favourite genres: I will admit I do read a good chunk of YA it is something about the instant gratification I get from them. I have been getting more and more into LGBTQ lit as of late. Both fiction and non.
📕 Book you can't wait to read in 2023: This is going to sound a bit silly but I am rereading a lot of Anne Rice this year, with my 17 year old who has recently shown interest. I am excited to read with him on these books. Will make for some great dinner conversations I am sure.

message 445: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I love the OCD-ness of some/all of us! I have an irrational fear of running out of things to read! As IF that could ev-er possibly happen!! So I borrow 100+ books from the library to make sure I don’t run out of books. It’s good to meet fellow readers here on GR so we don’t all feel so freakish! My RL friends think I’m nuts! It’s hard to meet people who like books in the real, everyday world. I love going to the library every Wednesday for the same reason. I just love chatting with the librarians… :)

message 446: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Running out of books. Hmmm. I do not know that feeling. I keep having to get more bookcases. I could cull the books I suppose, but they look so comfortable where they are.

message 447: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Lauri, where do you live that allows you to check out 100 books? That is insane. Mine allows 20 I think but on Libby I can get 25. I have literally 1000’s of books between B&N, Scribd, Amazon, Libby and a crap load of books on my book cases. I’ll never read them all before I die! No way!
