Kumkum Bhagya is based on Sense and Sensibility (???)
Had no Clue ! That serial seriously lacks both though :PP

I love the Emma Romola Garai version too!

"
Yes ma'am. As soon as next year's round starts so I can count it there ;)"
I also would say that you should try to watch it!
It's time for a rewatch for me also!

I have the full collection - It was really good esp the Mansfield Park one.
The 2017 one should be good, have you heard it?
The movie is really good though - Northanger Abbey!
And which version of Persuasion do you like?

This challenge is a good excuse to re-read your favourite JA books and re-watch favourite adaptations.
I bought the JA BBC radio play collection last week, plan to start listening next month. Once I'm done I'll post my review here. I usually don't listen to radio plays, so I'm quite looking forward to it.

And I just saw that they have Good Omens too for the next 9 days -http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04knthd

Welcome to the challenge Karishma!
Welcome to the challenge Karishma!

Well, this week I finished the original novel by Jane Austen, this time in the audiobook format. Then I watched all three adaptations and listened to the one radio dramatisation I have. What a week!
Loved the book. It was just as great as the first and second time I had read it.
Here is my ranking of adaptations:

1/ Persuasion (1971 Mini-Series - Ann Firbank, Bryan Marshall, Marian Spencer, Richard Vernon) 1/20/18 ★★★★
2/ Persuasion (1995 Movie - Amanda Root, Ciarán Hinds) 1/16/18 ★★★★ (it's rather 3.5 stars)
3/ Persuasion (2007 TV Movie - Sally Hawkins, Rupert Penry-Jones) 1/17/18 ★★★
The 1971 Mini-Series has the best portrayal of Anne. Sweet-tempered & thoughtful, past the bloom of youth yet very elegant. She has strong opinions and isn't afraid to voice them when in the right company. Unfortunately the production is quite cheap-looking, especially the interior shots, it's just too apparent they are all done in the studio. Unlike the old BBC Emma TV series here they did shoot in exteriors, too, so there are quite realistic Uppercross, Lyme and Bath.
The 1995&2007 movies did Anne's character a disservice. Especially the 2007 movie shows her as a drab and awkward creature, with abominable fashion sense always speaking either in whisper or panting. The last 10 minutes are dreadful, Anne jogging through Bath without her bonnet and gloves?! Terrible! Could you imagine the scandal that it would have caused?

Throughout the book several characters mention how "improved" Anne's looks are. In Lyme Mr Elliot stares at her in open admiration while he has no inkling who she is. There is a scene in Bath where Captain Wentworth overhears some ladies speaking among themselves about Anne being prettier than her sister. Also in Bath, Anne's father compliments her complexion and her figure. You see nothing of this in the movies. Or rather there are some of these things stated but none of them is shown well.
I like Wentworth in all three adaptations. 2007 movie has a great cast of minor characters: Sir Walter Elliot, Mr Elliot (in the book he's described as not handsome, but with great manners), Musgroves. Although the best Mrs Clay is in the 1995 movie - freckles, buck tooth and all. :D

First listened to radio dramatization. Then managed to read it without imagining Gwyneth and now watched that version you suggested.
OMG, it's so different book when you actually have open mind :) I liked it.
And series with Romola Garai is great. I think it's getting on my BBC rewatch list :)
You were right. Thank you ☺

I kinda understand whispering, since she's always wallflower and to the rest of the family practically part of the furniture. Trying to be invisible :P

But the truth is Anne's just so much better in the book. *sigh*
Yeah, the running and the awkward kiss (in the public no less) with her nose dripping. Can you imagine the scandal? She under-dressed (for her standing in society), running like a lunatic from one end of Bath to another, then sweating, panting, salivating and with her nose dripping kissing a man on the street in front of complete strangers. What a disgrace!
Apart from Anne and the ending, I quite liked the 2007 movie. Wentworth, minor characters & cinematography - all really good. I even liked the idea of Anne's diary. Quite clever.

I think I'll try and watch as many adaptations of Emma as I can find first. Then move to next book.

As my reading list is already full for Jan and Feb I'll have to push the book to March.
BTW I'm looking forward to your ranking of Emma adaptations.

Yesterday I finished listening to the 2014 BBC Radio Dramatisation of Pride and Prejudice.
It's in three parts, each a little less than an hour long. I enjoyed it very much. But I guess like with all the radio plays you enjoy them much more if you know the source material.

Elizabeth= Pippa Nixon, Mr Darcy= Jamie Parker

What do you think? Would anybody be interested?

My DVD Box set includes a very nice documentary on Making of the series with a lot of insight into the characters, the era, and how the series came to be.
Trivia: Andrew Davies (the writer) originally didn't want Colin Firth to play Mr Darcy. He considered him to be too chubby and too ginger. LOL! Thankfuly the producer Sue Birtwistle prevailed and history was made.

"The task of writing a new Pride and Prejudice script for TV has fallen to Nina Raine, an English playwright behind 2010’s Tribes and this year’s lauded play Consent at the National Theatre. Raine will be the sixth writer to adapt Jane Austen’s most famous novel for British TV. “Nina Raine is one of the most gifted writers working today, and her wit and emotional intelligence make her the perfect match for Jane Austen,” says Damien Timmer from the production company, Mammoth.
“She’s a devoted fan of the book, but she’s never seen any previous adaptations – so pleasingly the novel only exists in her imagination.”
Raine says that she intends to explore the “darker tones” inherent in Austen’s work. “Pride and Prejudice is actually a very adult book, much less bonnet-y than people assume,” the writer told the Radio Times. “I hope I do justice to Austen’s dark intelligence – sparkling, yes, but sparkling like granite,” she continued..."
Well, I don't know how to feel about that. Do we really need darker Pride and Prejudice?

As for dark tones, is she sure she read JA P&P and not zombie version? :P

As for the zombies I found that version rather silly than dark. :P
EDIT: So I googled her and she's much more of a theatre person - wrote and directed a bunch of plays. Doesn't seem she has much experience with TV productions. I found she is credited on imdb.com as a writer of one episode of a TV series Mistresses (never heard of it before).
Well, I wish her luck.
