Broken Harbour by Tana French, book #4 in the Dublin Murder Squad series that has already been approved on the task thread
Review: This was my fourth book by Tana French. By now I already know that no matter how hard I try, I won't be able to produce a review that does her books justice. I simply can't write as well as she does!
Her books are usually shelved under the "Crime" or "Thriller" genres, but they're not just your average crime novel. The focus is different: they're not so much about who did it, but why it was done and what led to it. They're not about the evidence, but the people involved: the victims, suspects and the detectives working the case. They're not your one-hour CSI episode, focusing on the DNA, fingerprints and fancy machines that tell you who did it. They don't have a lone serial killer who the victims never knew; usually you end up looking for the murderer very close to the victims.
In this one, the focus is on why we do the things we do, on why we end up hurting the very people we're supposed to love the most. On how keeping secrets and trying very hard to just appear normal to everyone else can end up doing much more damage than the problem we've been trying to hide from everyone. On whether the people who look like the have everything perfect and under control are really just one inch away from total chaos and disaster.
The vast majority of the characters in her books are deeply traumatised, broken people who are struggling to find meaning in their lives after something horrible has happened to them. These are not exactly easy-going books but if you like going deep, they're highly recommended.

The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
+15 task (Nigeria)
Task total: 15
Grand total: 65
I know that the 15-point tasks are not eligible for review points, but I wanted to comment anyway. It has been fun so far reading stuff that is very different from my culture and the things that are familiar to me. The 12 short stories in the book were good and understandable, but what made them even more interesting were the little details that I was compelled to look up: the unfamiliar trees people are standing under, the unfamiliar foods they're eating, the Nigerian names which are so different that I couldn't even tell if it was a man or a woman without the author telling me...
